~ Yondu to Peter before sacrificing himself |
Yondu Udonta is a major character in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He is portrayed by Michael Rooker.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Debated Validations[]
- Despite caring for Quill like a son, he put a bounty on his head after he refused to give him his location, beats him once apprehending him and Gamora for his betrayal and most likely would have killed him had he not offered him the Power Stone in exchange for their assistance in defeating Ronan. However, it can be inferred that he was just trying to hide his care for Quill in front of his clan, as he wanted him brought back alive after putting out his bounty and seemed reluctant when pointing his arrow at him, even to the point of facing the opposite direction.
- In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Yondu posthumously motivated Kraglin to use the Yaka Arrow against the Hellspawn in Knowhere, however, it's unknown if this was actually Yondu or just part of Kraglin's imagination.
Background[]
- After finding out what Ego did to his previous children, he decided not to hand Peter Quill over and instead kept him and raised him as his own, acting as a father figure and giving him his Quad Blasters as a Christmas gift.
Guardians of the Galaxy[]
- He put together a deal for Quill so they can sell the Power Stone.
- Pulls Quill and Gamora out of space, though he proceeded to try and kill Quill after, it is unknown if he would have actually done it.
- Helps the Guardians fight Ronan and save Xandar.
- Takes out many Sakaarans on Xandar with his arrow.
- After finding out Quill didn't actually give him the Power Stone and instead double-crossed him, he merely smiled and didn't go after the Guardians.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2[]
- He respectfully greets Stakar in Contraxia despite Stakar's disgust towards him.
- After being hired by Ayesha in an attempt to kill the Guardians he instead chooses to steal the Anulax Batteries from Rocket, claiming he wouldn't help kill the Guardians of the Galaxy, which led to a mutiny from his ravagers.
- After being imprisoned he and Rocket make a plan to break out and go save Quill with the help of Groot.
- He and Rocket massacre all the ravagers and even blow up the ship.
- He goes with Rocket to Ego to save Quill.
- When Rocket was saying he was only saving Quill for pragmatism, Yondu tells him it’s not the case and calls him out on it. This would help Rocket regret his actions at the end of this film.
- Crashes his ship into Ego, temporarily destroying his physical form and proceeds to head down with the Guardians to his core so they can kill him.
- Motivates Quill to use his heart to control his Celestial powers and defeat Ego
- Stays behind on Ego refusing to leave without Quill.
- Sacrifices his own life by giving Quill the only space suit and flying out of Ego into space, claiming he was damn lucky Quill was his boy.
- At some point he retrieved an Earth Zune for Quill, as he always believed he would come back.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He acts like a jerk way too often. He constantly acts rude towards his own men and especially to Quill despite valuing all of them.
- In a Kick the Dog moment, he literally kicks the Christmas Tree Peter made and ruins the presents Peter and Kraglin planned on giving to the members.
- When on Contraxia with Stakar, he angrily tells him to go to hell.
- For years he committed child trafficking by taking Ego's children to him, which was strictly against the Ravager Code, which is far too heinous to be NPG and he didn’t show any remorse for this at all.
- He is lethal as he threatened the Broker and brutally slaughtered every single Ravager on the Eclector without hesitation even though they were his clan for years. However, the Ravagers were the ones who betrayed Yondu, so this was somewhat justified. Another moment was when he attempted to kill Taserface, he blew up a ship’s engine in the process with Rocket even calling him a maniac.
Trivia[]
- His What If…? counterparts do not qualify as IA for the following reasons.
- Ravager T’Challa: He didn’t do anything unique compared to Star-Lord and Nebula.
- Nova Corps Nebula: His raising of Nebula happened off-screen and eventually lacked impact on the story.
- Celestial Peter Quill: This version doesn’t even qualify as a Hero let alone as he never even had a change of heart and gave Peter to his father Ego. If anything, he’s one of the most heinous villains in that universe for allowing Ego to use his son to destroy countless planets. Not to mention how he trafficked a bunch of children without any competition.
- Yondu, Star-Lord and Kraglin Obfonteri are the only characters in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be Inconsistently Admirable.
