Inconsistently Admirable Wiki

I'm Wolverine. I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn't very nice.
~ Wolverine's mantra
There's a part of me as wild an' fierce as my namesake. I'm a hard man... given to hard ways... when I fight, it's to win. That isn't pretty, an' it sure isn't nice. But bein' a man... that means choosin' to grow an' change an' put aside the old ways.
~ Wolverine on himself

James "Logan" Howlett, better known as Wolverine, is one of the most iconic Marvel characters of all time and is among the most well-known superheroes ever made. He is the main protagonist of the Wolverine comics and a major character in several X-Men Comics.

He was created by Roy Thomas, the late Len Wein and John Romita Sr.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • When his biological father Thomas killed his stepfather John, which caused his mutation to manifest, he used his bone claws to avenge him by killing Thomas in retribution.
  • When his half-brother Dog reappeared and attacked him, Logan fought back but ultimately resisted the urge to kill him, showing restraint despite his violent nature. This restraint is particularly notable given the deep-seated trauma and anger Logan harbored towards Dog.
  • Despite years of isolation and a bestial existence, Logan opened up to the Creed siblings.
  • He trained Black Widow in martial arts.
  • After World War II, he sought redemption for his actions and studied with Bando Saburo to learn how to leave his animalistic traits behind and become a man, falling in love with Itsu in the process and conceiving a child named Daken.
  • After Itsu was killed and Daken was presumed deceased, he sought to avenge their deaths, using a piece of his soul to form a powerful blade with the help of Muramasa.
  • He helped Nick Fury defeat the Sym-Soldiers in Vietnam and discovered the existence of symbiotes when the Tyranosaurus Symbiote bonded to him.
  • After having his skeleton coated with Adamantium during the Weapon X program, he ultimately managed to escape his captors after a final memory wipe and ended up joining the X-Men
  • When Hulk was stomping through the Canadian wilderness, he was deployed by Department H to fight and neutralize the green giant. This would lead to the two beginning a rivalry that neither would live down in years to come.
  • He stood up against his superiors in the government and chose to join the X-Men, leaving behind his life as both a loner and a weapon.
  • He managed to free himself after Pierce crucified him in an X-Shaped cross and then worked with Jubilee to return to the X-Men and save them from being killed by Pierce in their weakened state. With help from Jubilee and Psylocke, Logan located the missing X-Men and then defeated the Shadow King, uniting the team again.
  • He went to investigate the abandoned Weapon X facility in hopes of discovering his origins and regaining his memories.
  • After being captured by Omega Red, he worked with Maverick to escape who also revealed that some of Logan's memories were false. He later worked with Maverick and the X-Men to defeat Omega Red and stop the Matsu'o army.
  • After Mariko was poisoned by Silver Fox and Matsu'o, she asked Logan to give her peace by killing her, to which he reluctantly complied.
  • After receiving a letter from Sarah Kinney regarding the existence of X-23, he left the mansion to a secluded place to not be disturbed after Laura tracked him down, attempting to calm her down and ultimately breaking through her rage in order to help her and apologizing.
  • After tracking down Laura and the Wannabees, he fought her on the defensive and easily subdued her, taking her back to the Xavier Institue and clearing up their previous misunderstanding, choosing to help her hide her origins to protect her.
  • Upon his death, resurrection, brainwashing and finally breaking free, he confronted his killer Gorgon and defeated him, later spending months searching for Rikuto's body, and upon finding it, gave him a proper burial and expressed his condolences to the parents.
  • After House of M and Scarlet Witch's alteration of reality, he searched out Muramasa and claimed the sword made with his soul, also accepting Tony Stark's offer to join the newly re-formed Avengers.
  • Discovering that his son Daken was alive, he tracked him down and tried to help him and set him free from his hate. Throughout several years, Logan would constantly tried to mend his relationship with Daken and convince him to change, ultimately succeeding and allowing his son to become a hero of his own right.
  • He led the X-Force that Cyclops formed to take care of jobs that the other X-Men wouldn't normally do.
  • When he and Spider-Man were blasted to the age of the Dinosaurs while trying to stop a robbery, he befriended a tribe of hominids and allowed them to survive the K-T Extinction Event. Upon returning to a broken future, he sacrificed himself despite Peter's protests by using the Phoenix Gun to shoot the Phoenix Force unto Doom the Living Planet, destroying it and saving all of Earth.
  • Saved the entire universe and all forms of life from Contagion, a despicable sadist who wanted to destroy everything with a deadly virus just for fun, abused his son, killed several of his cousins, and infected all of his followers.
  • When he became the new host of the Phoenix Force, he overcame his rage with Spider-Man's help and simply told the Phoenix to go away, which it did.
  • After defeating all his deceased foes in Hell and being approached by his father to become the new ruler of Hell, he refused and returned to the living world to take control of his "Hellverine" body and prevent him from continuing to target the people he cared about. He also tried to get Mariko free from her torture.
  • He viciously defeated and killed the Mongrels, however after finding out that they were all his biological children, he was filled with remorse. He then buried them all and attempted to kill himself for what he'd done, abandoning civilization as a whole.
  • He and Nightcrawler sacrificed themselves to save all of Krakoa by teleporting themselves with the Mother Mold into space, saving Krakoa and all the mutants on Earth.
  • He's been judged as worthy by the Progenitor during Judgement Day.
  • He managed to finally kill Sabertooth in a violent fight to avenge Daken's death, finally putting an end to his 200-year old rivalry.
  • He worked to free his son after he became the new Hellverine and even tried to get Baghra-Ghul to posses him instead, ultimately succeding in giving Daken new life and allowing him to make peace with his demons.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • In spite of his many attempts to control his animalistic tendencies and his vicious rage, he is still a berserker. He has a tendency of fighting with a very savage style and often resorts to instantly murdering his opponents, something that all his allies and family acknowledge. He has also no sense of strategy at times and instead chooses to just dispose of his enemies through brutal bloodshed, with the most infamous example being when he killed the Mongrels, which were all his biological children and while he was unaware of this, it still goes to show just how violent he is in combat as the whole thing had been planned by Daken with the knowledge that Logan would fight without hesitation and ask questions later. The other X-Men were quick to acknowledge him as the one that was most willing to "permanently" defeat his foes.
  • Calling him a massive jerk is quite the understatement, as he often acts disrespectful to all those around him, even his friends. He also often opposes other heroes such as Hulk, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Cyclops, and Iron Man and he was also shown to initially have very antagonistic relationships with all of his children except for Erista and Gabby.
    • In fact him and Hulk have a very intense and fierce rivalry given how his first appearance depicted him as being an enemy of Hulk. After their first encounter they have been at odds for a long time and fight each other a lot whenever they meet. Over time, these ongoing conflicts have worsened Wolverine's perception of Hulk, and he's repeatedly stabbed him and tried to kill him multiple times in their often brutal and violent battles.
  • He is arguably one of the most lethal heroic characters in Marvel Comics as a whole and has probably disposed of most of his villains and even just ordinary foes and sometimes innocents. Even when compared to other lethal heroes like Deadpool, Magneto, Venom or both Scarlet Spiders, he still stands out for his notable violence and occasional enjoyment in combat.
  • He is a known addict who is shown to constantly smoke and drink to a severely unhealthy point.
