I'm-a Wario; I'm-a gonna win!
~ Wario's famous catchphrase.

Wario (ワリオ, Wario) is a major character in Nintendo's Mario franchise, and the titular main protagonist of its spin-off series of the same name.

He is the anti-heroic and incredibly greedy counterpart, as well as the arch-rival of Mario, who either tries to best him on every occasion or seeking ways of gaining money and power for himself, depending on the game. Debuting in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Wario began his envious rivalry with Mario by stealing a castle from the latter when he was away saving Princess Daisy from Tatanga. Even though Mario defeated him, his tricks and schemes didn't end there. While he is often considered more of a pesky nuisance, he is willing to put his differences aside when participating in Mario's day-off activities with his partner-in-crime, Waluigi, and occasionally assisting him in defeating Bowser. Unlike Mario, who is more than willing to help and save others in his adventures, Wario's adventures are mostly focused on collecting money and treasure to gain fame.

He was voiced by Charles Martinet from Mario Kart 64 to Mario Strikers: Battle League, and by Kevin Afghani from WarioWare: Move It! onwards. However, in the Japanese versions of Mario Kart 64 as well as Mario Kart: Super Circuit and the first two Mario Party games, he was voiced by Thomas Spindler.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He helps Mario, Luigi and Yoshi into saving Princess Peach from Bowser in Super Mario 64 DS, without showing any signs of greed.
  • He frees the Genie from Captain Syrup's manipulative clutches, something which the Genie was happy about.
  • He defeats Rudy, an evil clown-like creature who curses people into monsters, after being manipulated into freeing him, turning back all of Rudy's victims in the process.
  • He defeats the Shake King and released Queen Merelda to end the former's reign of terror in the Shake Dimension.
  • He saves the Spritelings from Black Jewel's captivity.
  • He stops Terrormisu from stealing and consuming the souls of everyone.
  • After defeating the Mega Bug, he spared its life because it made his final level perfect.
  • Upon realizing that Red, Master Mantis and Lulu are still trapped inside the game he made, he goes back in to save them along with his friends.
  • Despite sometimes bickering and often getting into trouble, he still treats Waluigi rather well as a genuine friend.
  • He had no problem with Petey Piranha and King Boo joining his team in Mario super star Baseball.
  • He gets along with the other employees of WarioWare, Inc., as he praises them for their talents and even keeps a picture with all of them as of WarioWare Gold. In addition, he also has a genuine friendship with Jimmy T., a close friend from his childhood who he grew up with and is also his texting buddy.
  • He cares about his pet chicken, Hen, and even prioritized of taking her back to the nest over getting his treasure back.
  • He also cares about Princess Shokora and gave out a happy reaction when he received a kiss from her.
  • When teamed up with Toadette in Mario Party 6, they are given the title "Secret Friends", which seems to imply that he does cares about her.
  • After a bit of doubtful reflection, he agreed to help the fighters into defeating Tabuu from recreating the World of Smash Bros. in the Subspace.
  • Despite the admirable standards of the franchise, Wario manages to stand out as he doesn't have as many resources as most other heroic characters. Not to mention the fact that he was able to save many souls from a fate worse than death.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is an overall anti-hero who generally performs heroic things out of greed, selfishness and only for obtaining his treasure, and his actions typically lack good/noble intentions.
    • He never once pays his WarioWare employees for their hard work despite being friends with them.
    • He is also not actually friends with Waluigi since they frequently bicker and only see each other as partners.
  • He is On & Off, as he performs villainous actions from time to time, with such instances being:
    • Taking over Mario's castle while the latter has saved Princess Daisy, as well as hypnotizing the inhabitants of Mario Land to destroy Mario.
    • Joining the Subspace Army and taunting Lucas over a trophicated Ness.
    • Taking over the Peaceful Woods and renaming them Wario's Woods.
    • Creating a video game tournament to scam others.
    • Helping Bowser into sabotaging a tennis tournament (along with Waluigi) as revenge for losing against Mario and Luigi on their first match.
    • Working with Waluigi into sabotaging a cannon from Bob-omb Derby by inserting a Bullet Bill into it, which would have got Mario killed or injured badly had Bowser not intervened and saved him.
  • Even in his heroic roles, he is often lazy, incompetent and a massive jerk to many people around him, even including his allies.
    • He is known for being a bad sport, as he calls his opponents cheaters if he loses a go-kart race and will pretend to applaud the winner before teasing them in Smash Bros.
    • In WarioWare: Get it Together!, he is the ultimate cause of the creation of the Bugs, and him and his friends getting sucked into a game and are endangered, because of his crummy programming and poor attempt to fix it.
  • He is extremely arrogant and a massive narcissist, as he intentionally draws himself as someone better than anyone else, is constantly focused on benefiting himself, has golden statues of himself, and many of the Microgames he creates involve himself in some way.
  • He is rather mischievous, as he tends to enjoy messing around and pulling pranks on others, especially when he plots on sabotaging sports games, and one time vandalizing a picture of Mario to mock him in Mario Power Tennis.
  • According to Chief Chilly, Wario was rude to him and insulted his mustache.

Trivia[]

  • So far, he is the only character in the mainstream Mario franchise to be Inconsistently Admirable and the first Brawl character to be Inconsistently Admirable.
  • Despite the two of them being great partners, he and Waluigi have the exact opposite moral rankings, as Wario is an Inconsistently Admirable and Villainous Benchmark, whereas Waluigi is both Inconsistently Heinous and Heroic Benchmark.
