~ Reznov (through Mason) killing Steiner, another of his most famous lines |
Captain Viktor Reznov is the tritagonist of the Call of Duty franchise's Black Ops series. He serves as one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Sgt. Roebuck) of Call of Duty: World at War, a playable character in Call of Duty: Black Ops, a posthumous character in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and a major character in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. He is also a playable character in the season nine pass of Call of Duty: Mobile, and a featured character in the Mobile comics.
He was a Red Army officer who participated in pushing the Nazis back to Berlin, and was later promoted to captain for his services during World War II. When assigned to capture a Nazi scientist by the name of Friedrich Steiner, Reznov and his right-hand, Dimitri Petrenko, were betrayed by their commanders Nikita Dragovich and Lev Kravchenko. Losing Dimitri to Steiner's nova gas, Reznov plotted his revenge while being a prisoner of Vorkuta. He found his chance in reprogramming the CIA agent Alex Mason to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner.
When escaping from the prison, he helped Mason escape while sacrificing himself so Alex could fulfill his goal in killing Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner. Though Reznov never appears in person after the events, Mason would see Reznov as a hallucination during his missions in Khe Sahn due to his reprogramming. Reznov's goal to get revenge on his enemies succeeded, as Mason eliminated Dragovich, Steiner and later Kravchenko (determined by the player) during his service with the CIA. During the 2040s, Reznov was brought back to life by Project Blackout alongside Mason, Frank Woods, Jason Hudson, and Raul Menendez as part of the "Archetypes".
In Call of Duty: World at War and Black Ops, he was voiced by Gary Oldman. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, he was voiced by Piotr Michael.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- During World War II, he actively fought against the Nazis.
- Expresses disgust for General Amsel being responsible for the deaths of men, women and children.
- Reznov and Dimitri fought through Nazis armed with flamethowers
- Helps Petrenko kill Nazi General Heinrich Amsel.
- Rescued Dimitri from some Nazis that kidnapped him.
- If Dimitri chooses to kill the surrendering Nazis by burning them, he will express dismay by saying it's cruel to prolong an animal's suffering.
- Is visibly remorseful of Chernov's death and even states that someone should read his diary, implying he may regret how he has treated Chernov.
- Kills a Nazi who shot and wounded Dimitri. Afterwards he compliments Dimitri for being able to plant the Soviet flag over Berlin despite his wounds.
- Led a team of Soviets and successfully defeated the Nazis and captured Dr. Steiner. He saw that Steiner had a darkness in him and thought of executing him, but as a soldier, he followed Dragovich's orders and took Steiner alive despite his dislike for Dragovich.
- Fought against British and Soviet soldiers to activate bombs on the ship to successfully destroy Nova 6, a chemical weapon.
- Leads the Vorkuta Uprising to bring the prisoners and Alex Mason to freedom.
- Views Alex Mason and Dimitri Petrenko as true friends and is shown to care for them.
- Dragged Mason to safety after he was affected by tear gas, despite it being a risk since Reznov himself would be affected as well.
- Sacrifices his own life to ensure that Mason escapes from Vorkuta.
- Is truly disgusted by the actions of Nikita Dragovich, who is a Pure Evil and a Hate Sink, as well as Lev Kravchenko and Friedrich Steiner, who are also Pure Evil. He reprograms Mason to kill them to avenge anyone wronged by them including Dimitri Petrenko due to how glorifying his death at the hands of Dragovich was.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's shown to be overly lethal and brutal towards his enemies to the point of committing numerous war crimes, primarily shown by him repeatedly ordering his team to execute any surrendering/injured Nazis.
- He is shown to be a jerk towards his soldiers who show any level of compassion/sympathy towards the enemy or fear, and favors Dimitri over them. This is mostly shown with Chernov.
- Although he sabotaged Mason's brainwashing out of altruism, this was mostly for his own means to get revenge on Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner, instead of stopping Dragovich's plan. This even caused Mason to compromise his mission to capture Steiner.
