â | I have found, Krogan, that it is important to draw inspiration from those who've bested you. Hiccup's ingenuity, it's fascinating. The boy has invented things most could only dream of. | â |
~ Viggo's admiration and respect for Hiccup |
â | You really don't know your oleanders do you, Hiccup? Red oleander is harmless to dragons. I knew there was no other way to get your help. I would never harm such a magnificent creature. When Johann and Krogan left me for dead, a Monstrous Nightmare saved me. I spent my whole life hunting dragons, killing them. And I've come to respect them as equals. You taught me that, Hiccup. That's the final irony, I suppose. | â |
~ Viggo revealing to Hiccup that he never meant to harm Toothless and explaining why he redeemed himself |
â | Oh, this is it for me, the end of the game. Go. I'll hold them off until you're out. Hiccup, you're more ruthless than you realize. I know you will defeat Krogan and Johann...now go. | â |
~ Viggo's final goodbye to Hiccup |

His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Even before his redemption he was shown to be a much more honorable individual than the other Dragon Hunters like Ryker and Krogan.
- He truly respects Hiccup as both his enemy and his ally, defending him when Krogan insults him and admiring his connection to dragons while also acknowledging his high intellect and all his amazing inventions.
- Despite being a central antagonist for most of the series, he ultimately redeems himself out of a genuine newfound compassion for dragons, even questioning why he would harm them.
- No matter how high the admirable standard is, Viggo stands out for his role in saving the entire archipielago from Ryker's Shellfire and later sacrificing himself in order to save Hiccup and give the Riders an advantage over Johann, not to mention his influence continued to inspire Hiccup even years later.
Race to the Edge[]
- Even though it was for pragmatic reasons, he agreed to let Hiccup take the Buffalord's saliva to cure Astrid of the Scourge of Odin despite the fact he could have taken the chance to kill all the riders.
- After Ryker betrays him and steals the Shellfire for himself, Viggo decides to team up with Hiccup to stop him.
- He tells the riders that if they help him stop Ryker, he will tell them exactly how to stop the Shellfire and where to find the Dragon Eye.
- Even though the riders refused to listen to him, he still tried to help by giving them the list of islands that Ryker planned to attack, along with the order and when.
- Even though he escaped his imprisionment at the Defenders of the Wing's island, he later returned to Hiccup and gave him the Dragon Eye despite havig a perfect chance to escape with it.
- He tells Hiccup to take him to a spot at sea, where he uses his dagger to provoke the Submarriper and lead him to the Shellfire so it can fight against it.
- His help was vital to defeating Ryker and freeing the Shellfire from the hunters, saving the lives of everyone on the Edge and Ryker'd future targets such as the Berkians and Outcasts.
- During his alliance with Krogan he seems to be toned down a lot, respecting Hiccup as an adversary and complimenting his inventions while also valuing the lives of his men which he previously didn't do, being apalled by how Krogan is willing to sacrifice all his hunters.
- While retrieving the Dragon Eye from the Edge's volcano, he saved a hunter from falling to his death, the hunter even acknowledges that Krogan would have left him behind.
- He has a newfound respect for the riders and tries to keep Krogan from killing them, as shown when he convinced him to spare Fishlegs' life by admitting that he knew more about dragons than anyone else
- After being left for dead by Johann and saved by a monstrous nightmare, he redeems himself and comes to respect dragons as equals to him.
- He met up with Hiccup by calling him to a remote island pretending to be Stoick in order convince him to join him against Krogan and Johann.
- When Hiccup began to attack him, he remained only on the defensive while trying to convince him to talk and that he didn't want to fight and even freed Toothless from his trap.
- Even though he used manipulation so Hiccup could help him, he ultimately meant no genuine harm to Toothless as he knew Hiccup wouldn't trust him.
- He convinces Hiccup to fly him to a mountain where a Skrill lives to get his help.
- He befriends a Skrill by using a metal dagger and tames him in a friendly manner like Hiccup does, showing how much he has changed from his days as a Dragon Hunter.
- He uses the Skrill as a diversion for an attack on Johann's base so that he and Hiccup can sneak in.
- He pretends to betray Hiccup and hand him and Toothless over to Johann, secretly giving him a key so he can escape when he gives a signal.
- When Johann discovers him, he uses the zippleback gas in his Inferno sword to take him and Krogan out, also giving Hiccup the signal to escape.
- He frees the Skrill and protects it from the hunters.
- He leads every hunter on the base as well while Hiccup gets the "antidote" and the lenses Johann had, getting severely injured and shot in the back by numerous arrows.
- Even though the lenses weren't in the vault, Viggo genuinely didn't know and apologizes to Hiccup while also revealing that he never actually poisoned Toothless.
- He makes amends with Hiccup over their past battles, accepting each other as friends.
- Knowing he will die, he convinces Hiccup to leave by taking a secret exit out of the cave, saying a final goodbye to him and telling him he trusts him to beat Johann and Krogan and giving him his Maces & Talons piece.
- He tries to convince the Skrill to leave as well but it ultimately choses to stay as well.
- He holds off all the of Johann's soldiers while Hiccup escapes, sacrificing his life for his once enemy.
- After his death, Hiccup and Astrid discuss how strange it is to have him gone while acknowledging jus how much the riders had learned from him.
How to Train Your Dragon 2[]
- It's shown that Viggo's genius motivated Hiccup even years later as he added the Zippleback gas part of Viggo's Fire Sword to his own Inferno, not to mention it's design is partly based on Viggo's.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World[]
- His influence and past experiences with Hiccup and the riders allowed them to properly strategize and fight against Grimmel the Grisly, which ultimately led to his defeat and to the safe separation of humans and dragons
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- In spite of his redemption he is still far too manipulative to be NPG, as the only reason Hiccup helped him in the first place is because Viggo lied about the properties of a Red Oleander and tricked him into believing Toothless had been poisoned and would die soon while telling him the only antidote was in Johann's vault. Not to mention the only reason Hiccup met with him in the first place is because he had sent a terror mail pretending to be Stoick and claiming to have found a Dragon Eye Lens.
- He has several jerkish moments and is shown to not have any respect for his older brother often insulting him and yelling at him (though given who Ryker is and what he's like it's at least understandable).
- He is lethal as he's willing to kill Johann, Krogan and all their hunters even after his redemption, not to mention all the dragons (and also humans) he killed and endangered during his time as a Dragon Hunter.
- It's unknown if he felt remorse for attempting to spread the Scourge of Odin or attempting to make Berk to starve by blocking trading routes (both actions that made him a potential PE or NPE before his redemption).
