I will never understand the hate against her...
Hello there, welcome to my first ever IA proposal of 2026, which is dedicated to my recently favorite TV series Dexter. Since the series really lack heroic scaling, with Dexter himself currently being the first and only IA of the show. I think his own sister also fits with the scale, please welcome Debra Morgan!
What's The Work?
Dexter is a crime drama-thriller TV Series created by Showtime, inspired by Jeff Lindsay's novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter. It tells the story about an anti-heroic serial killer named Dexter Morgan, and his journey of defeating and killing other serial killers and criminals who were even more villainous than him. The series expanded into a franchise with the sequels Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Resurrection; as well as the prequel Dexter: Original Sin.
Who is She?
Debra "Deb" Morgan is the deuteragonist of the franchise. She is a very renowned detective and lieutenant of the Miami Metro Police Department who is the younger sister of the protagonist Dexter. In the events of the series, she usually participated as a leading figure of catching crimes and pursuing justice in ethical means, opposing to his brother's brutal ways. Despite many challenges and harships she endured, she never gave up and always wanted to protect others from criminals.
What Has She Done?
I will try to shorten this section since she is a long-running character.
In General
In General, she is a very noble and admirable cop who never given up in pursuing justice. Whenever she accepted an important case, she never let other people down and always did her best to catch those notorious criminals. Unlike her brother Dexter, who stopped criminals with very lethal and unethical ways, she tried her best to do so as ethical as possible. Due to her efforts, many fellow detectives, officers, and even civilians admired her and always relied on her to solve hard cases and catch many enigmatic criminals. Even after fallen to corruption in Season 7, she still supported her brother and still tried her best to pursue justice, so that criminals won't harm innocents anymore, as well as retaining a lot of standards and heroism in the process.
Despite being famous for swearing a lot throughout the series, she wasn't too much of a jerk and it was merely her way of expressing emotions. Even other people and her own brother understood that. Even if she behaved jerkishly in some occasions, they were fairly minor and never left any serious consequences.
Background & Original Sin
She constantly supported Dexter in his personal life. Upon seeing how much her father Harry has done to protect others as a police officers, she followed his footstep and became a police officer just like her father, in order to pursue justice and to catch villainous criminals, by joining Miami Metro Police Department.
Season 1
After getting more experienced in her police journey, she started to pursue heroism on her own without relying on her brother Dexter. She then participated in solving the murder case done by the mysterious Ice Truck Killer, who brutally killed many prostitutes. After getting advanced and promoted by her close friend Thomas Matthews, she started to do research and tried to get closer and closer to the Ice Truck Killer, proving herself capable of leading the other detectives. When her boyfriend Rudy Cooper revealed to her to be the Ice Truck Killer and kidnapped her, she still did her best to call Dexter, as well as her fellow police to stop him, which she succeeded after having been saved by Dexter.
Season 2
After the horrific trauma caused by the Ice Truck Killer, she did her best to suppress her trauma and still tried her best to catch criminals and protect the innocents. Upon meeting the special agent Frank Lundy and began a relationship with him, she got her trauma suppressed and managed to cope with it better, therefore, she could continue doing many heroic deeds and catch many more criminals easily. Upon knowing about Dexter's supposed sponsor Lila West, she began suspecting her and warned her brother to not get too close to her. After finding out about Lila being a very violent illegal immigrant who tends to burn things to harm people, she helped Dexter finding her to get her deported. When Lila kidnapped Astor and Cody and burned down her house and tried to kill them, he left Lundy to go to Oregon alone and saved the children instead.
Season 3
When she was approached by Yuki Amado, Joey Quinn's former informant, she refused to conspire with her in order to protect Quinn. Upon the rise of George King aka The Skinner, the notorious killers who killed a lot of people by skinning them alive, she actively led the team to find clues and get closer to her. During the progress, she encountered Anton Briggs, and then actively protected him from being harmed by the Skinner. When Skinner captured Anton, she rushed to his location and managed to rescue him on time. At the end, she managed to catch the Skinner and ended his killing spree once and for all. Due to her efforts in defeating Skinner, she earned the Detective status, which she absolutely deserved.
Season 4
Upon the prevalence of the Trinity Killer, who has killed a lot of helpless innocents in a 4 (supposedly 3) part cycle, she immediately started investigating the matter and tried to find as many clues as possible. With the return of Frank Lundy, who retired from the FBI and voluntarily worked with the police to catch Trinity once and for all. She re-approached him and tried to work with him to find as many clues leading to Trinity as possible, although she was initially reluctant to do so. During the process, she tried to interrogate primary suspects and spared them if they are not guilty.
After Lundy getting assassinated, although she was really broken, she managed to overcome it and focused in exposing Trinity, in honor of her mentor-lover Lundy. She then investigated and caught Christine Hill, the person who killed Lundy and injured her, and interrogated her to get closer to the true killer. She managed to collect enough research and finally found out Trinity was Arthur Mitchell. Thanks to Dexter's effort in quietly capturing Trinity, she managed to protect the innocents from his killing spree.
Season 5
After her brother witnessed his wife Rita's tragic death, she always tried to reassure him and helped him cope with his trauma, which she succeded. She then started investigating the Barrel Girls Gang, who raped a lot of women and killed them inside a barrel brutally. During her investigation, she also found out Joey Quinn had been suspecting Dexter for "murdering" his wife, she managed to snapped him out of that idea and convinced him not to suspect him further, successfully made him back up.
She then tried to find as many footage against the rape gang as possible, in order to defeat the gang as well as their leader Jordan Chase once and for all. After seeing Jordan Chase died and seeing two vigilantes behind the curtain, whom she didn't know were her brother Dexter, and Lumen Pierce, she sympathized with them and spared them, knowing how much of a bad guy Jordan Chase was and understood why they did that.
Season 6
After being promoted to lieutenant by Tom Matthews, she tried her best to be the best leading figure of the department as she could, by actively helping others in solving murder cases of many killers. Upon the rise of Travis Marshall, the Doomsday Killer, who brutally murdered innocents as the progress of his religious ritual, she helped the entire department find as many clues to get closer to him as possible. When Travis manipulated other people to kill the entire department with Wormwood, a very toxic gas, she defeated them and protected the entire police force from dying. She also fled other people and protected them from being taken hostage by Travis, which included Dexter's son Harrison.
Season 7
After witnessing his brother killing Travis Marshall, she helped him get rid of evidences and framed his death as a religious suicide. After knowing her brother was a serial killer, she tried her best to suppress her urge to kill and tried to make him do heroic acts in ethical ways. She then stopped Ray Speltzer, the cunning serial killer who recently brutally murdered two women and got away with the law, and managed to defeat him once and for all. After defeating Ray, she finally understood why Dexter did what he did and promised not to interfere with him, as long as he doesn't interfere with the Miami Metro investigations.
After she was poisoned by Hannah McKay, she helped arresting her by testifying against her for killing Sal Price, much as Dexter's expectations. In the finale, when she encountered a very difficult moral dillemma, between killing her brother Dexter or her boss Maria, she expressed desire not to kill anyone and only killed the latter in very last resort to protect her brother. Despite killing Maria, she felt extreme guilt and remorse over it, crying over her body.
Season 8
Despite her extreme guilt and trauma, she still wanted to catch criminals by becoming a private investigator, in order not to hinder her fellow detectives' works. Upon finding a notorious hitman named El Sapo, she managed to defeat and killed him for good, with the help of Dexter concealing her kill. During her reunion dinner with Dexter, it was revealed that years ago, she saved an innocent family man, and thanks to her effort, the man could enjoy a dinner with his family in the very same restaurant. Therefore, Dexter proved her that she actually did more good than harm in her life.
After being treated by Dr. Vogel, she managed to fully overcome her trauma and redeemed herself, becoming a better person like she was before, and started to reconcile with Dexter and came back as a noble detective as she was always known as. After that, she started to investigate the Brain Surgeon, a brutal serial killer who carved people's brains out while they were alive. Knowing Hannah was a fugitive and no longer a threat, she provided support to her so that she could escape and live peacefully. Later on, she helped Dexter catch Oliver Saxon, who was revealed to be the Brain Surgeon, which she succeded. Although she was fatally wounded by Saxon, she still did her best to get her arrested by all means, and with the help of other police officers, she succeded. At the end, she reassured Dexter and had final moments with him, before tragically going to coma.
Admirable Standard
Although the series' admirable standard is lower than the heinous standard, doesn't mean it is actually low, as it was set by the Bay Harbor Butcher himself, Dexter Morgan, who restlessly caught and defeated many notorious criminals and killers, ranging from Brian Moser, Jordan Chase to Arthur Mitchell, which all of them were even more heinous than him, and proved himself to be very selfless despite wanting to kill for his bloodlust. There are also very noble cops such as Angel Batista, who also unstoppably pursued justice and actively helped catching criminals for the sake of other people's safety.
However, Debra easily stands out for many reasons. First of all, it is absolutely unfair to compare her to Dexter because he was FAR more powerful than her, as Dex himself had (nearly) superhuman capabilities and abilities, which he could easily stalked and subdued a lot of strong enemies (with many of them being super strong, such as Little Chino) and didn't need any complex weapons rather than his knives, while Deb is a much weaker individual who mainly relied on her strong tenacity and experience, yet still managed to successfully catching a lot of criminals. She also showed many signs of struggling against strong enemies. It also helps that Dexter himself always appreciated her heroism and always considered her to be far more heroic than him, even to the point of sparing some of his enemies to let Deb do her heroic deeds herself. It also helps that most of the time, she defeated enemies in a much more ethical way than her brother.
She also easily stands out from other police officers and detectives, even stands out from Angel Batista, as she proved herself to be the most noble and admirable officer and lieutenant of the department, as well as a worthy leading figure, and many others wanted to look up to her. This is because she had a lot of great actions in stopping various notorious killers and criminals by exposing such George King/The Skinner; Arthur Mitchell/Trinity Killer; Travis Marshall/Doomsday Killer, and of course, her greatest achievement, defeating Oliver Saxon, who is considered the most evil and heinous villain of the series. With those efforts, she was truly a role model to other heroes, such as Angel Batista, Joey Quinn and Vince Masuka, or even her mentor Tom Matthews. Overall, she can be seen to set the admirable standard among the police force and officials.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?
Even before falling to villainy, she could be reckless and wrathful at times, and did some questionable behaviors in a fit of rage, such as nearly killing a teenager. However, this is a minor prevention, considering how traumatized she is. She can also be a bit jerkish and hypocritical at times, as she constantly swore and could let those words offend others sometimes. She also tends to criticize others while doing similar things herself, even Hannah called her out for that.
And of course, what ultimately prevented her from being NPG is that she started to do many questionable acts after knowing her brother was a serial killer, making her somewhat villainous. Some of her actions include: helping Dexter in his serial killing spree; altering Maria LaGuerta's evidence to keep Doakes being framed as the Bay Harbor Butcher; killing Maria to protect Dexter; drinking heavily in order to cope with her trauma; and of course, tried to drown Dexter and herself after knowing more of her father Harry's secrets.
Final Verdict
A very easy yes to this brave heroine. Despite her flaws, she always wanted to fight for the better and wanted to become a better person.
