With the upcoming mafia game and me finishing Mafia 3 after a long time of repetitive gameplay, it is time for the only character not a protagonist to finally be proposed.
What is the work?[]
Mafia III is a 2016 action-adventure game made by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. It is the third installment and a standalone sequel to the other games. It is set in New Bordeaux, a version of New Orleans in the year 1968, during the Civil Rights movement in the South. Unlike every other game where you kill innocent people, Mafia 3 is full of the worst scumbags you can think off, including slavers and sex traffickers.
Who is he?[]
Agent John Donovan is the deuteragonist of the 2016 video game Mafia III.

He's a former CIA agent and Vietnam veteran who helped Lincoln Clay in his mission of taking down the Marcano Crime Family and exacting his revenge on Sal Marcano for killing his adoptive family, as well having a personal vendetta of his own against another former CIA agent, Connor Aldridge, who sold information to the North Vietnamese government.
He serves the role of being the antithesis to Father James, who actively tries to convince Lincoln to give up on his quest for revenge. Meanwhile, Donovan actively encourages it and assists Lincoln by providing him crucial intel about his targets.
What makes him admirable?[]
- He is a CIA agent in the Guatemala revolution whose goal was to take down the current president in the revolution, thus ending his regime.
- After realizing that Connor Aldrige was a traitor working for the NVA and Soviets, he confronted him and tried to bring him into custody peacefully, which ended in a scuffle that Donovan unfortunately lost.
- During his time as an operative for army platoon in Vietnam, he trained solders such as Lincoln Clay, who at the behest of Donovan, was allowed to go deeper into the phoenix program.
- No matter how bad it got, he still sided with the U.S. despite what they did to the Vietnamese out of indefinite loyalty to his country.
- When Lincoln woke up from his coma, he gave him the strength to attack the Marcano crime family and take down their operations.
- He is the main reason every admirable act in the game happens in the first place as he gave Lincoln key evidence on the rackets that Marcano ran and showed him files on the district bosses.
- In the DLC Stones Unturned, he finds Aldridge and manages to take down his mercenaries at an island to stop Aldridge from selling nukes that would cause World War 3.
- Even when Aldridge is bleeding to death, he gives him an honorable death by allowing him to smoke a cigarette and explain his motives.
- Organizes nearly all the attack plans that Lincoln uses to take down Marcano's gang:
- Break into Tony Derazio's base of operations through the elevator.
- Plants a tracker on Frank Pangani's car.
- Reveals the location of southern union leader Remy Duvall.
- Drugs members at Olivia Marcano's party to get into her estate and save Duvall's cousin from being tortured and killed.
- Tracks down Alcee Bennet so Lincoln can get into a boxing match ran by Tommy.
- Plants bombs on a crane to sabotage the boat Lou Marcano is on.
- Lastly, he listens to a recording between Sal and Giorgi and directs Lincoln to finally take both of them down.
- After the mission, he tells Lincoln to help Marshal take down bounties such as a con artist who scams elderly widows, a public nudist, and a member of the Irish mob.
- During the hearing with the senator, in which Donovan talks about Lincoln, he murders the senate for his responsibility in the assassination of JFK and swears that he will kill all co-conspirators who were involved.
- In a death scene in which Donovan is killed through a glitch, Maguire, the FBI agent who made a story on Lincoln, mentions that after Donovan’s death, Lincoln was unable to take down Sal and was killed shortly after, showing how important he was in the story and in the DLC’s. This happens with the other characters, but Donovan is the only reason Lincoln was able to meet these people in the first place.
- Despite his violent, occasionally sadistic tendencies, as well as crimes such as dismembering an old woman to death for information and helping take down Sal Marcano, he still means well, as even the dismembering of the old woman was the only reason he was able to save a troop of 42 solders. He also admits regularly that he will never be the same and will keep feeling remorse for his actions, but he had to do it.
Why is he inconsistent?[]
- He is a massive jerk towards most people he meets, mainly Father James, who he tells at for trying to stop Lincoln from taking over the city like Sal, mentioning that if not Lincoln, another scumbag would take Sal’s place.
- To say he is lethal, would be an understatement, as he was known for torturing and murdering captives in Vietnam, once dismembered an old woman to death and killed all Aldridge’s mercenaries, which while was for the good of the own world, was still done out of revenge.
- By helping Lincoln take down the organization, he is responsible for Lincoln becoming a crime lord in the first place and his killing of hundreds of people.
- In the after mentioned mission where you blow up a crane to kill Lou, we see dozens of innocent people who had nothing to do with the mafia drowning to death, being viscously eaten to death by gators, falling to their death, or being burnt alive.
- Just like Lincoln, he is a hypocrite, as he claims that killing Sal would stop a power vacuum from starting in the criminal underworld, while ignoring the fact that their operations would hurt innocent people and that they would be no better than the man that they despised.
- During the last mission on who Lincoln decides to side with, he tells Lincoln to murder everyone he is an associated with, including Cassandra, Burke, and most personally, Vito Scalleta.
- He shows his wrathfulness and his willingness to endanger and hurt innocent people when he shoots Senator Blake and forces the people in the crowd to sit down or else he will kill them.
Admirable Standard[]
Well, as I've mentioned over and over, without Donovan's expertise and wiretapping, Lincoln would be unable to even find the people associated with Marcano, especially take them down and improve the city in the first place. He also has his own admirable acts such as when he saved 42 of his troops, trained Lincoln in Vietnam, and gave Lincoln the courage to help take down Aldridge. While i do think he easily counts already, we also need to note that the resource gap is considerably huge. Lincoln owns numerous districts throughout the game, has the help of 3 underbosses who already know how organized crime works, and is a one-man army who almost never struggles with groups of enemies.
Verdict[]
An easy yes.
