Mr Game & Watch

Who is He?[]

Mr. Game & Watch is the titular main protagonist of the handheld video game franchise of the same name, Game & Watch. He is a stick figure-styled silhouette character who resides in Flat Zone, a completely flat, two-dimensional universe, like how Mr. Game & Watch is himself. The Game & Watch franchise, quite ironically, did not have a true mascot, so Mr. Game & Watch is meant to be a mixture of the handheld franchise. Mr. Game & Watch himself is introduced in 2001 on GameCube's Super Smash Bros. Melee, as a playable fighter in that game. As the first (successful) Nintendo character to be created, he is Nintendo's oldest character in history.

What's The Work?[]

Game & Watch, also known as Game & Watch Gallery, is a handheld series and galleries of classic science fiction video games and devices. The games may be simple and basic, but they have evolved technology, and a timeless legacy and history. The Game & Watch series focuses on a set of random and pretty bizarre events in Mr. Game & Watch's world, Flat Zone, with a purely ambiguous lore overall, but it also focuses on how Mr. Game & Watch constantly helps and saves other people's lives, and performs a variety of certain tasks and jobs to protect the environment.

Note: Every playable character in the Game & Watch units that do not feature a preexisting character and are original to the Game & Watch series is confirmed to be Mr. Game & Watch himself (claimed from the Nintendo Wiki), although two Game & Watch units, Judge and Lion, actually feature two Mr. Game & Watches. To further contribute this, one of the tips in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate referring to Mr. Game & Watch says: "This game character is older than Mario, coming from a series of handheld Nintendo games with LCD screens. Within the Game & Watch series, he took on various shapes and roles." Go read it here.

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

Game & Watch[]

  • Throughout the entire timeline of Game & Watch, Mr. Game & Watch has constantly gone out of his way to do various objectives and tasks across Flat Zone that involves helping and being supportive to other people/residents, and also involves protecting the general environment of Flat Zone.
  • As a firefighter, Mr. Game & Watch rescued a countless amount of endangered people from a burning building in the game, Fire.
  • Mr. Game & Watch has saved countless amounts of pedestrians from falling into manholes by covering them up in the game, Manhole.
  • As a zookeeper, Mr. Game & Watch has tamed lions in order to keep them in their cages and prevent them from endangering other people in Flat Zone and causing an ambush in the game, Lion, even if it cost his own resources.
  • Mr. Game & Watch has saved a countless amount of people from falling into the ocean by letting them land on his boat. If they did end up falling into the water, they would get devoured and killed by sharks in the water in the game, Parachute.
  • As a scuba diver, Mr. Game & Watch swims into the ocean to collect loot for his fellow sailors who are in the boat, while he evades and braves a giant octopus that tries to capture him and the treasure with his tentacles in the game, Octopus.
  • In the game, Turtle Bridge, Mr. Game & Watch has jumped on the shells of turtles who are floating in the water in order to collect multiple packages, and managed to store them for a resident worker who is located at the cliffs (regardless if it risks Mr. Game & Watch's own life by possibly falling into the water if he does not land on a turtle's shell), who takes the packages from Mr. Game & Watch and stores it at his package collection.
  • In the game, Fire Attack, Mr. Game & Watch has constantly defended his fort from a series of Native Americans with flaming torches, who threaten to unlawfully burn his fort down.
  • In the game, Oil Panic, Mr. Game & Watch deals with an oil leak at a gas station as a station helper by catching leaking oil from an oil leak from a pipe, and dumping it into the boss' oil drum on the second floor, while also being aware not to dump it onto the gas station's costumers, as if he did, the costumers would get disturbed and enraged, and Mr. Game & Watch would get fired from his job.
  • In the game, Donkey Kong Junior, Mr. Game & Watch managed to set Donkey Kong free from a cage.

Super Smash Bros.[]

  • Shortly after Solid Snake, Lucario, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Princess Zelda/Sheik and Princess Peach end up defeating the Duon (created out of Shadow Bugs from the multiple false clones of Mr. Game & Watch) in the Subspace Emissary, Mr. Game & Watch is revived thanks to Peach. When he was confronted by Peach, Mr. Game & Watch is instantly remorseful for his actions by looking down in shame. However, when Peach gives him her parasol to motivate and cheer him up, he instantly redeems himself from his villainous actions and reforms from his corrupting qualities, although his villainous actions were all due to the brainwashing thanks to Tabuu. Furthermore, Mr. Game & Watch does not show any signs of sadism while boarding the Battleship Halberd during the Subspace Emissary, making his villainous actions justifiable even further.
  • Mr. Game & Watch saves the world from Tabuu's domination in the Subspace Emissary, as well as Galeem and Dharkon's domination in World of Light.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • While Mr. Game & Watch has been more than admirable in the Game & Watch franchise to qualify as Pure Good, it is officially confirmed in the Subspace Emissary that Mr. Game & Watch is incapable of defining morality (having knowledge of the difference between good and evil), as he lacks understanding of the difference between good and evil. It is no wonder Tabuu manipulated and brainwashed him so easily before the events of the Subspace Emissary. Thus, Mr. Game & Watch's agency is too impaired to qualify to be a Near Pure Good or Pure Good hero.
  • Mr. Game & Watch is shown to be lethal, shown in one of the most famous Game & Watch units, Judge, where he challenges another opponent to a duel and Mr. Game & Watch does not show any signs of symphony and mercy for the opponent when Mr. Game & Watch defeats and outnumbers him.
  • His personality is left rather vague, as he was just an amalgamation of characters throughout the Game & Watch franchise and not presenting himself until Super Smash Bros. Melee. As such, Mr. Game & Watch has insufficient characterization due to the Game & Watch franchise not having a true mascot up until 2001.

Final Verdict[]

He did so much admirable actions back in his original series, compensated with his corrupting factors and being insufficiently characterized. A simple yes.
