For this BSD character, I felt it's best to do a discussion because I'm in between the decision of if he's IA or NPG. I unfortunately don't have the qualifications to propose on the NPG wiki though but if anyone does have knowledge of BSD characters and are able to propose him for NPG, knock yourself out. So, let's talk about this not so mafioso mafioso, Oda. I ain't talking about One Piece lol (laugh at my jokes please).
What's the Work?
Bungo Stray Dogs Is a 2012 monthly manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. The series is regarded as underrated by many but is very popular in Japan.
The series revolve around characters that are based off of famous people in 20th century or older literature history, and their powers are a reference to those people's famous works. The protagonist, Atsushi Nakajima was kicked out of his orphanage and saved a man named Osamu Dazai from drowning, only to find out that Dazai was trying to off himself on purpose. Dazai and his partner, Doppo Kunikida are looking for a rampaging tiger and the two of them find out that Atsushi was the tiger (thanks to his ability to turn into a wild tiger). After the investigation, Dazai recruits him into the Agency he works for, the 'Armed Detective Agency', a grope of detectives that handles crimes too dangerous for the police to handle. There, he meets many other ability users as they tackle various cases and events taking place in the city of Yokohama. As Atsushi fights and works to earn himself a place in the world, he and his allies fight to protect themselves from their longtime rivals, the Port Mafia and defend the city from outside threats like The Guild, the Rats in the House of the Dead and the Decay of the Angel.
Who is Sakunosuke Oda?
Sakunosuka Oda, more commonly known as Odasaku by his friends and the BSD community (gonna call him Odasaku in this discussion so ya'll for whatever reason won't think that I'm One Piece's creator Oda lol), is one of the major characters of Bungo Stray Dogs, specifically appearing in the series' prequal story lines. Like the rest of the characters, Oda is based off of the author of the same name who was also close friends with the real life Dazai and Ango. The name Odasaku's ability is Flawless, which is a reference to the real-life author's book called Flawless. The ability grants Odasaku the power of foresight, being able to see up to six seconds into the future, rendering almost any surprise attack towards him useless.
Odasaku was a member of the Port Mafia and was the best friend/drinking buddy of Dazai and Ango. Before joining the Mafia, Odasaku was a freelance gun slinging hit man at a young age who was pretty skilled yet brutal in his line of work. When he got older and met an author of an unfinished book series he was reading, the man gave Odasaku the suggestion to write the rest of the book himself and left him with the wise words of "To write novels is to write about humans". Odasaku took those words to heart and went with the mind set of "a murderer has no right to write about the lives" and decides to never hopes that one day he'll become a novelist who'll conclude the series of books he was reading. He then strived to become a better person in general, adopting 5 children, four boys, and one girl: Kōsuke, Katsumi, Yū, Shinji, and Sakura. All five of them were orphaned as a result of the Dragon's Head Conflict. Odasaku was regarded in the Port Mafia as an odd ball for not taking a life in the line of work that he's in.
Seriously this scene almost makes me shade a tear.
During the incident with the foreign group Mimic, their leader André Gide was targeting Odasaku due to their abilities being very similar and seeing him as the only one who'll bring them salvation. When the orphans he adopted were targeted and killed by Mimic, Odasaku's spirit broke and gave up on his dream of becoming a writer, going on a suicide mission to defeat Mimic and their leader, which he succeeded in doing but at the cost of his life (obviously).
Before he died, he gives Dazai some heartfelt words, telling him that it doesn't matter if he's on the side of good or evil, he'll never fill the hole in his heart, but the least he can do is become a good man who helps people so he can make his world more beautiful.
Admirable Standard
Someone like Atsushi has done a lot to save Yokohama, hell even saving the world. Kyōka helped Atsushi out in saving himself, Yokohama, and the world, and Fukuchi went through extreme lengths for world peace, making himself look like the bad guy to do it. Odasaku should be in a league of his own when it comes to admirability, if it wasn't for his positive influence on Dazai, Dazai would have been an even worse person than he was and is. Dazai, while not a good person, is slowly becoming a better person as the story of BSD progresses, and the person we should be thanking for that is Oda. Like I said, Oda saved five orphans that lost everything at a young age during the worst conflict in Yokohama's criminal underworld history. Even when he was a young hit man, he was still polite and honorable, telling Fukuzawa the ware about of Ranpo after he was in the clutches of the group V, not asking for anything in return like freeing him from his cell (cause he can escape anytime he wanted), just a harmless request of telling the people who make food in the prison to put curry on the menu if he bombs into them. Honestly, Odasaku (along with Atsushi) might be one of the most morally good characters in BSD, given how majority of the hero characters in the series aren't full on completely people. Buuuuut...
How is he Inconsistent?
For starters, Odasaku works for the mafia lol. But the most important thing I want to talk about is the fact that he was a hit man. When he was a hitman, Oda was pretty brrrutaaal with his gun slinging skills, straight up flawlessly (pun intended) shooting a man in the head while his hands were tied behind his back (though it was deserved since the guy killed his own boss and framed Oda for the murder). When his orphan kids were killed by mimic, he went on a mission of his own to defeat them for good, and they were no exception to his brutal kills as well.
The only thing that scratches my head though is that we have a character like Akame (who also has brutal kills) on NPG Wiki and both Akame and Oda primarily target people who deserve it. A little confused by that though.
