You think I... am similar to Kurosaki and the others? All this time I have always stayed calm and collected... balancing each decision on the scales that you speak of... but Kurosaki is a fool, he can't do that. When he wants to save someone, he goes to save them. Inoue-san is a fool too, and Sado is a fool, Kuchiki-san is a fool and Abarai is a fool. If I seem to you in any way similar to that bunch of a fools... that makes me very happy.
~ Uryu replies Haschwalth's mockery by tell his feeling toward Team Ichigo
But, I saw Hollows... Hollows attacked people! I saw it, so I know that Shinigami can't take care of everything on their own! Why?! Father must have seen too... so why... does he still say stuff like that?! Sensei, I want to get stronger. I'll become a very strong Quincy and the protect everyone from Hollows. Then father will definitely agree with the way of Quincy.
~ A young Uryū vow with Soken that he will become Quincy to protect the innocents

Uryū Ishida is one of the main protagonists in the anime/manga series Bleach. He is a Quincy that resides in Karakura Town and was believed to be the last of his kind. In the beginning, he and Ichigo met on unfriendly terms, but after a competition to see whom can slay the highest number of Hollows, Uryū became an ally to Ichigo and his friends.

He is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama in Japanese and Derek Stephen Prince in English.

His Good Ranking[]

He has no problem to befriended with a silly classmate like Keigo. He still accepts the help from anyone despite the person is the one who he doesn't like, such as Ichigo and even Mayuri.
  • As a child, he already interested to be Quincy because he wanted to save the innocents from Hollows and fell that Shinigami can't do that all by themselves, so they need Quincy to protect humanity from Hollows attack. His disappointment towards his own father because he fell Ryuken is a selfish man who cares about his career rather than saving a people.

Filler and Movie[]

  • In "Bount Arc", he bonds with Yoshino Soma after she saved and healed him from Bounts. Despite being temporary powerless, Uryū still tries to protect her from harm and mourn her death after being killed by Jin. He even reminds her to his late mother. Meaning that he sees Yoshino as his mother-figure.
    • Also in "Bount Arc", realizing that Ran'Tao is so much resemble with Yoshino, not wanting to see her suffer the same fate as Yoshino, Uryu saved her from her reiatsu becoming unstable and uncontrollable by sacrificing his power again.
  • In "The New Captain Shusuke Amagai arc", he and other Karakura's kid agree to help Ichigo and Rukia to protect Ruri'chiyo from Kumoi attempted to assasinate her.
  • In " Zanpakuto Unknown Tales arc", he and Chad protect Orihime from Muramasa who attempted to kill her after being healed in the human world.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • His role as antagonist in the "Agent of Shinigami" and "Thousand Years Blood Wars" arcs are the reason why he can't be qualified as Near Pure Good. Despite his noble intentions, as an antagonist, he is still a threat:
    • He was introduced as an antagonist, challenging Ichigo to hunting a Hollow by using a Hollow Bait to show that he is better than him. And since he's a Quincy, he can destroy Hollow instead of purifying them which could endanger the balance of the world if he kills too many Hollows.
    • In the "Thousand Year Blood War" arc, he effectively becomes an anti-villain. After learning about Yhwach and the Wandenreich, he decides to join them to avenge his mother's death. Despite his motivation and ultimately helping Ichigo to kill Yhwach, he actively joins their quest to invade Soul Palace, including stopping Team Ichigo's intention to reach Yhwach, who is ready to absorb Soul King. This act resulted in the death of the Soul King, along with Mimihagi and Ukitake, which threatened the balance of the world.
    • While we know his real motive for joining Wandenreich is revenge, thanks to the modifications in the anime adaptation, Uryu fell into Adaptational Villainy in the anime adaptation of the "Thousand Year Blood War" arc. The modification in anime makes his betrayal feel genuine, as he has no problem fighting against Shinigami, killing one of the Royal Guard, and allowing Yhwach to absorb the Soul King. Both the manga and anime adaptations clearly show that he knows precisely what Yhwach does, and no one in the Wandenreich, not even Yhwach or Haschwalth (although the latter gave him a warning not to betray their side in the manga), forces or manipulates him to do their dirty work.
    • In the Anime adaptation, he fights against Ichigo in the Soul Palace and Renji in Warhwelt. Although Uryu knows that both Ichigo and Renji will reluctantly attack him, he is not happy about fighting and giving Ichigo and Renji fatal blows. Nevertheless, he still chooses to do this with no hesitation or worry about whether his attack might potentially kill his friends. Even Uryu possibly did this to prevent them from getting killed or facing more brutal fights from other Schuztaffel; his actions are considered cruel and unwise.
  • Although he's against torturing or killing his opponents, Uryū will still choose lethal methods to finish his battles if necessary. While his opponents all survive, he still gives them really gruesome injuries. Examples of this include his fights with Mayuri Kurotsuchi, Szayellaporro Granz, Senjumaru Shutara, Ichigo Kurosaki and Renji Abarai.
  • Although he is cordial toward women and had no problem saving even cruel sadists such as Loly and Menoly, he is still quite lethal and has no problem in killing them.
    • He did spare Curruci's life, but still let her be executed by Exequias.
    • In TYBW arc, he trapped Shutara in her own Bankai and shot and killed her with an arrow, though CFYOW light-novel confirmed that Shutara and other Zero Squad members regenerated in their base. Still, this does not negate Uryū's lethality against women.
  • Even after his redemption, Uryū still retains his elitist beliefs. He believe that Quincy are better than Shinigami and their enemies should fear them, though he has no problem helping Team Ichigo in protecting innocents and believes in camaraderie and teamwork.

Trivia[]

  • Sugiyama Noriaki, his Japanese voice actor, also known to be voiced Sasuke Uchiha. Both he and Uryū served as rival and then best-friends for respective Main Character (Naruto Uzumaki and Ichigo Kurosaki), have black hair, were believed to be the "last member" of their clans, and became sympathetic anti-villain in last arc.
    • While Sasuke did kill several Samurai during chased Danzo at his sanity slippage and had intention to kill five kages as part of his revolution, he never kills any important characters on-screen despite almost killing Naruto and Sakura. Uryu, however, while subverting the corrupting element, is succeed kills 2 important character like Senjumaru Shutara and a main antagonist Yhwach. (He directly kills the former while the latter actually killed by Ichigo although Uryu still responsible to nullified Yhwach for temporary thus allow Ichigo able to kills him for good).
  • He and Gin Ichimaru are the only Bleach characters to be Inconsistently Admirable.
