The Knight is the main protagonist of the popular metroidvania Hollow Knight. It is a mute figure whose main goal is to either contain the Radiance within itself or straight up kill her (depending on the player's choice). Its heroism is determined by the player's choices but not all acts it commits are heroic.

Its Good Ranking[]

What Makes it Admirable?[]

  • Defeated many hostile creatures on its journey such as the Vengefly King, Gruz Mother and Brooding Mawlek.
  • Defeated the False Knight, a maggot that stole the armour of great knight Hegemol and used it to oppress other bugs that oppressed its own kind.
  • Defeated Hornet multiple times in honorable duels before befriending her.
  • Defeated Soul Master, the head of the Soul Sanctum who killed and collected the souls of thousands of bugs in order to achieve immortality.
  • Befriended a lot of characters throughout the story such as Quirrel, Elderbug, Hornet, Cornifer and Grimm.
  • Made Elderbug happier by giving him a delicate flower.
  • Saved Cloth from the creatures in the Ancient Basin before helping her fulfil her goal of facing her fears or die trying.
  • Gained the trust and respect of the Mantis Tribe after a fight against the Mantis Lords.
  • Defeated Nosk, a trickster that lured its prey by disguising itself as a loved one.
  • Delivered a delicate flower to the Traitor Lord's child on behalf of the Grey Mourney.
  • Defeated the Traitor Lord, a rogue Mantis Lord who used the infection to make himself stronger.
  • Saved Myla in the Fungal Wastes.
  • Saved Sly in the Forgotten Crossroads.
  • Defeated the Hive Knight and freed it according to Hive Queen Vespa.
  • In the Hollow Knight and Sealed Siblings endings, it defeats the Hollow Knight and contains the Radiance within itself.
  • In the Dream No More ending, it sacrifices itself, becomes a smaller version of the Void Entity, defeats the Radiance and ends the Infection.
  • In the "Sister of the Void" ending of Silksong, it rescues Hornet and Lace from the Void, bringing them to safety and calling back the Void to end its corruption of Pharloom. This is made more admirable by the fact that even though it doesn't know who Lace is, it saves her anyways.
  • While it, as a vessel, was designed to be completely hollow, the Knight not only possesses a strong enough will to unite the whole Void, but evidently possesses benevolent intentions, with Hornet deducing that it seeks the truth at Hallownest's heart. Nosk, a shapeshifter that imitates the loved ones of its victims, also takes the form of Hornet in its Winged Nosk boss fight, displaying that the Knight cares for her.
    • This is most evident when it comes to her rescue and calls back the Void in Silksong, displaying that the Knight has enough of a personality to care for Hornet and overall, wants to help the lives of other bugs. As such, the Knight has full moral agency and is aware of the good it's doing.

What Makes It Inconsistent?[]

  • Most of the Knight's admirable deeds are optional and entirely depend on the player's actions, making it inconsistently admirable by definition.
  • It can help Grimm in the Ritual, harvesting the flames of Hallownest and allowing the Nightmare's Heart to extend its lifespan.
  • While it didn't destroy Hallownest as once believed, the Knight still destroys all of Godhome as the God of Gods in the "Embrace the Void" endings of Hollow Knight, causing the deaths of countless Godseekers who didn't deserve this fate. Additionally, it still isn't clear which variation of "Embrace the Void" is canon, implying that the Knight may have destroyed all of Hallownest if not for the Delicate Flower restraining the Void going haywire and returning it to its senses.
    • However, seeing as getting consumed by the Void is seen as a way of attuning to it, as seen from the Abyss tablets in Silksong, the Knight may simply be granting the Godseekers attunement to itself as the strongest Higher Being, fulfilling their wish.
