Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. (Sylvester the Cat or simply Sylvester) is an anthropomorphic cat and a major character in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies repertory, often the main antagonist who is known as a predatory archenemy for Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales, or Hippety Hopper (the first two being his favorite enemies to chase after). He is also the titular main protagonist of the animated series The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries.

He was voiced by the late Mel Blanc, Jeff Bergman, the late Greg Burson, Billy West, the late Joe Alaskey, Samuel Vincent and currently voiced by Eric Bauza.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • In the Chuck Jones' shorts ("Scaredy Cat", "Claws For Alarm", and "Jumpin' Jupiter"), he always succeeds at protecting the oblivious Porky Pig from the danger all around them, even when Sylvester got killed off ONCE for it.
    • The most admirable part of this mini-series is the fact Porky often forces Sylvester to be in a haunted hotel Sylvester happens to be afraid of, which has infested rodents that tries killing Porky without him knowing, and Sylvester is driven to insanity in his efforts to protect Porky; receiving nothing but belittlement by Porky (with the ONE exception of "Scaredy-Cat"; which has Porky thanking Sylvester for once).
  • Even though he tries to teach and train his son in mouse-catching so his son can also be a great predator in the future, Sylvester always protects his son Sylvester Jr. from danger on numerous occasions.
  • In "A Mouse Divided", Sylvester protects a baby mouse he adopted from several other alley cats attempting to eat him.
  • In "Father of the Bird", he protects a baby bird from danger.
  • In "Catty Cornered" Sylvester retrieved Tweety from two criminalistic gangsters who stole Tweety.
    • It doesn't help that Sylvester has even retrieved Tweety from thieves kidnapping him in his own spin-off show, with similar villains. (Meaning Sylvester rescued Tweety more than TWICE!)
  • In "Space Jam", he helped the other Looney Tunes, and Michael Jordan to defeat the Nerdlucks/Monstars.
  • In "Birds Anonymous", Sylvester protects Tweety from the B.A. cat who he tried to eat him and restrains him (in the same episode Sylvester vowed to stop antagonizing birds towards other cats and struggles with fighting his obsession in the same manner as fighting over an realistic addiction like beer, for example).
  • In "Don't Polka Me", he was willing to save Tweety from two other cats trying to eat him. As well as the episode, "Tweet and Sour", he was still willing to save Tweety from an orange alley cat attempting to eat him despite that being Sylvester's routine.
  • In "Curse of De Nile", he saves the lives of Granny, Tweety, and Hector, who were all oblivious to the danger they were in. Meaning Sylvester risked his life to save theirs (It doesn't help that in the entire series of The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, he ALWAYS protects his family from danger, even when Sylvester goes on and off with chasing after Tweety. Even from unpredictable mishaps like a deadly and nightmarish bed that was going to eat Granny in one episode of the show), all of which just scream "Courage the Cowardly Dog" levels in protective heroism and selflessness.
  • In "Tree For Two" and "Dr Jerkyl's Hide", he stands up against a pair of dogs (Spike and Chester) who have attempted to harass him.
  • In "Lighthouse Mouse", despite all of his setbacks and failures, he attempts to help his owner sleep in peace by keeping the lighthouse on against a troublemaking mouse.
  • In "The Tail End?", he saves the "no tail" from a group of tailless cats.
  • Despite chasing after Tweety a lot, he spared Tweety Bird's life with one last request for anything he wanted to have before Sylvester did anything in the episode "Point, Laser Point".
    • In the same episode of "Point, Laser Point", he also showed genuine kindness and empathy towards Wile E. Coyote. When Sylvester was called in for the appointment by Witch Hazel, Sylvester tells Wile that he wishes all the best for him in his goals and whatever he goes through, showcasing that Sylvester is capable of expressing genuine sympathy and compassion for the struggles of other people, even when Wile didn't care about a thing Sylvester had told him.
  • In "Life With Feathers", he constantly does his best to prevent a bird from committing suicide by not eating him and stopping said bird from getting himself eaten by Sylvester.
  • In the last episode of The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, the episode being "This Is the End", he redeems himself as a villain. Following his dream and getting a nightmare where his life gets awful for eating Tweety Bird, he then wakes up out of paranoia and hugs the still-alive Tweety, he even abandons his infamous desire to attempt eating him.
  • In "Bam, Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas!", he (as a ghost who suffered from brutal deaths by a forklift named "Sylvester the Investor") was utterly responsible for getting Daffy Duck to learn the error of his ways as a abusive businessman.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is an anti-hero with a natural obsession to eat birds and mice.
  • He is on and off, as he often plays a villainous role where he tries to eat his rival Tweety Bird, and he is also an anti-villain who has a large list of crimes he has committed.
    • He happens to be quite sadistic and violent. This is best shown in episodes like "All A Bir-r-r-d" and "Greedy For Tweety", as well as episodes where he abused and assaulted feral animals in the zoo for no reason other than his own mischief and enjoyment in both episodes: "Tweet Zoo" and "Rhino Ya Don't" (as well as wanting to kill several of them).
    • At many times, he can be seen to be good by teaming up with the other Looney Tunes in such features as the 1996 film Space Jam. As well as the fact he spared Tweety's life many times (ex. "Point, Laser Point"). However, on other occasions, he does appear as a downright villain such as appearing in Tweety's High Flying Adventure and The Wild Chase (the latter having Sylvester team up with Wile E. Coyote to catch Speedy and Road Runner).
  • He tends to be quite incompetent, lazy and clumsy as a mouser and a hunter.
  • He can have moments of acting arrogant, wrathful and egotistical as well.
  • He can be rude and quite a jerk sometimes, such as the time he'd smack around a kitten for just speaking in his first appearance Kitty Kornered and telling a cat to shut up in "Trick or Tweet".
  • He has moments of being way too mischievous for his own good, as he drove Elmer Fudd insane with Sylvester's noisy singing and his prancing antics in "Back-Alley Oproar". Which resulted in both of them dying and Elmer even got suicidal as an angel while Sylvester's nine lives that continue singing.

Trivia[]
