Suzaku Kururugi is the deuteragonist of the 2006 Sunrise anime Code Geass. He is the son of Japan's last Prime Minister and the childhood friend of Lelouch vi Britannia. When Japan is subjugated by the Britannian Empire, Suzaku chooses to fight for Britannia in the hope of reforming it from within, while Lelouch becomes the masked vigilante Zero and leads a rebellion against them.
He is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai (who also voiced Griffith in Berserk 2016) in the Japanese, and Yuri Lowenthal (who also voiced Sasuke Uchiha) in the English dub.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He was very remorseful for having killed his father out of fear that his policies would destroy Japan. He joined the Britannian military in order to atone for this act, hoping to save lives and die honorably in combat.
- He protects Lelouch from what he thinks is poison gas, and refuses his commander's orders to execute Lelouch, stating that he will not shoot a civilian.
- He returns to the Shinjuku ghetto in the Lancelot in an attempt to rescue Lelouch, taking on Ohgi's terrorist cell and only deviating from the battle in order to rescue a civilian.
- He goes back to a biased court-martial even after Zero rescued him, telling Zero that he repudiates terrorism and will not use a dishonest means of winning victory.
- He saves Jeremiah from being killed by the Purist Faction, even though it was Jeremiah who scapegoated him, which earns the latter's respect.
- Saved Lelouch from falling off a roof.
- He deeply loves Princess Euphemia for her pacifist ideals, and is willing to die for her.
- He cooperates with Zero in saving the victims of a hotel hijacking.
- He distinguishes himself in a number of battles, playing a critical role in the Battle of Narita and saving Princess Cornelia.
- He teams up with Lelouch to defeat Mao when Nunnally is kidnapped, destroying a machine-gun turret that Mao had mounted on the wall. He then manages to disarm the bomb that Nunnally is strapped to, before he disarms and arrests Mao.
- He doesn't reveal Kallen's identity as the Guren's pilot out of respect for their friendship at school.
- He takes on many invaders from the Chinese Federation himself, proclaiming his love for Princess Euphemia. He then teams up with Zero in order to take down the enemy force.
- He's appalled by the massacre at the Special Zone and tries to get the order withdrawn, then rescues Euphemia when she's shot by Zero, sadly telling her the zone was a success so she will die happy.
- He takes down many Black Knights and finally exposes and captures Zero in the hope of clearing Euphemia's name.
- When Zero demands to be exiled with a million followers, Suzaku forcibly stops Alicia Lohmeyer when she tries to massacre the crowd, telling her that Nunnally and Euphemia wanted to forgive Zero and wouldn't condone this.
- He stops Nina from killing Zero, while at the same time showing sympathy for her.
- He helps Lelouch save Shirley when she falls from a roof, and considers reconciling with Lelouch when Shirley tells him to. He's also distraught by Shirley's subsequent death.
- He stops himself from using Refrain on Kallen to interrogate her, stating that he will not be like Zero. This makes him start to realize that he's in the wrong and he starts questioning what side he's on.
- He deduces that Lelouch has become Zero again, but keeps this information to himself, as he knows telling the Emperor this would endanger Nunnally.
- He talks to Anya about his doubts, and is able to deduce that the Emperor has used his Geass on her and wiped her memories.
- He agrees to meet with Lelouch and tries to reconcile with him, admitting that he's ashamed for some of his actions and noting that Lelouch is lying in order to make himself look worse than he is. He agrees to work with Lelouch to end the war and bring peace, only for this to be ruined by Schneizel's interference.
- He's horrified that his actions got Tokyo destroyed and decides to redeem himself, tracking down Charles and trying to assassinate him, telling him that he's doing this to avenge Lelouch and Nunnally. He also duels Bismarck despite his "live" Geass trying to force him to back down.
- He sides with Lelouch in stopping Charles and Marianne's Ragnarok plot, telling them that Euphemia above all wouldn't want this.
- He joins with Lelouch in pulling off the Zero Requeim to bring world peace, helping Lelouch take over the throne and subduing the guards who try to execute him.
- He takes on and defeats four Knights of the Round who try to overthrow Lelouch.
- He helps Lelouch stop Schneizel's plan to use the FLEIJA bomb to subjugate the world, taking on many Black Knights in battle, then using the FLEIJA Eliminator to disarm the FLEIJA within a 0.04 second time limit.
- He engages Kallen in a fierce duel to give Lelouch time to defeat Schneizel, and despite being unable to beat her outright, he is able to damage her Knightmare to the point that it shuts down, and escapes from the Lancelot before it explodes.
- He poses as Zero and assassinates Lelouch as per their plan, being very remorseful at having to do this, and telling Lelouch that he gladly accepts his role as the new Zero.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He killed his own father due to him promising total resistance against Britannia, trying to justify it later by saying he was protecting Japan.
- He willingly fights for Britannia despite them being the ones who subjugated his people, and is willing to kill Zero if ordered to, despite Zero being the one fighting to free Japan.
- He can act like a jerk to Lelouch.
- He takes down a resistance cell under Lelouch's command, which was trying to save the residents of Shinjuku Ghetto from being massacred. While he didn't know he was fighting Lelouch, his actions nearly got everyone killed and he shows no concern about this afterward.
- He is often arrogant and self-righteous, blaming Zero and the Black Knights for all the harm caused by the war while viewing himself as more admirable than he would view Zero for similar actions.
- It is revealed via Mao's invasive mind probe that almost every heroic thing he has done, from joining the Britannian military to putting himself in danger, is driven by a sense of regret and death wish from killing his father. For all of his lecturing Zero on posturing, many of his own heroic deeds are a smoke screen for a wish to die an honorable death, all the while not realizing, or caring, that he fights for the wrong side.
- He physically restrains Zero so that he can be killed by an incoming bombing, even though this would mean his own death as well, irrationally saying that it's better than breaking the rules.
- He takes Kallen prisoner on Kamine Island and dismisses her reasons for following Zero, arrogantly telling her she has to redeem herself.
- He becomes unstable after Euphemia's death and breaks his oath about not killing, brutally killing several Black Knights in battle and screaming that he'll hunt down and kill Zero. He also punches Lloyd in the face for trying to withhold the key to the Lancelot, when Lloyd likely realized he was unstable and was trying to protect him.
- He refuses to hear Lelouch out when he learns that he's Zero, and turns him in to the Emperor, and requests to be made a Knight of the Round in exchange for this, despite Lelouch being one of his oldest friends. He also becomes complicit in the Emperor wiping Lelouch's memories and those of the students at Ashford, and using Lelouch as bait to draw out C.C. This also makes him a hypocrite as he hates Lelouch for using Geass, but has no problem with the Emperor doing the same thing. On top of all of this, he aided the Emperor, the man responsible for not just discarding Lelouch and Nunnally, but also ordering the occupation of Japan, putting himself squarely on the wrong side of the conflict, despite his intentions, which had already been proven rather hollow. He can only be forgiven somewhat for sliding into despair again following Euphie's death.
- He subjugates other countries on behalf of Britannia, hoping to climb in rank until he has enough power to demand Japan's liberation, and despite this plan having little chance of success, he does this out of obsession with beating Zero on a moral level and proving that he's somehow better than him.
- He takes part in an assault on the Chinese Federation under Schneizel, and is complicit with the other Knights of the Round in the High Eunuchs' attempt to kill Empress Tianzi along with the Black Knights. He also has Kallen captured during the battle and it's even implied that he may have tortured her.
- He threatens to drug Kallen with Refrain, only stopping at the last minute when he realizes this is no different from Lelouch's Geass power.
- Upon being guilt-tripped by Schneizel, he deploys himself into battle to kill Zero and the Black Knights, and equips the Lancelot with the FLEIJA bomb, instead of protecting Nunnally as he promised. He orders Zero to stand down or he will fire the FLEIJA, and while this was a bluff, he is forced to fire it against his will when his "live" Geass activates, which destroys Tokyo and kills millions of people.
- He cruelly compliments Nina for her role in making the FLEIJA when he sees that she's appalled at the destruction it caused.
- Admirable as his loyalty towards Lelouch is, aiding him in the Zero Requiem also meant aiding in the deaths of millions more, when he, as with Lelouch who was now Emperor, could have easily changed the system from within at this point as he claimed he wanted to.
