~ Sunny in the good ending, implying that he is going to admit the truth to his friends about what had really happened to Mari. |
The Player Character (named Sunny by default), is the main protagonist of the 2020 psychological horror game OMORI.
He is the younger brother of Mari who, after an accident involving pushing her down the stairs, ends up killing her. Staging Mari's death as a suicide with the help of Basil, he would end up locking himself away in his own house and repressing his memories of the incident out of guilt and trauma. Fast forward four years, when Sunny's Headspace begins acting up, he finds himself reuniting with his old friend Kel in the good ending, who would end up being the catalyst for his character arc and the rest of the game's Sunny Route.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- While he did kill Mari and stage her death as a suicide, which would end up causing a lot of mental turmoil for himself and his friends, he clearly feels remorse for this, attempting to repress his memories of the incident and even becoming suicidal because of it. This is without mentioning that killing her was an accident that he did not intend on happening.
- While he does many villainous things as Omori, these were all restricted within his Headspace and not the real world, meaning it isn't corrupting.
- While one could argue that he's lethal due to slashing Aubrey with a knife during their first confrontation, this is justified as he was only defending himself, with Aubrey being the one to instigate the fight in the first place, he also never shows this behavior later on in the game, making this at best a heating-up period.
- While he is able to steal twenty dollars from Kel, this is only in response to the latter forgetting to pay him back for paying for Hero's gift previously.
In the Main Game[]
- If the player chooses to, he is able to open the door for Kel, allowing for the game's good ending to begin. He can also choose to help the other residents of Faraway Town if he so chooses to.
- Used his own money to pay for Kel's gift to Hero when he requested it.
- When he and Kel stumble upon Aubrey and the Hooligans bullying Basil, the two of them attempted to intervene, trying to get her to stop, and when she doesn't, end up entering a fight with them where Sunny is able to scare Aubrey and the rest of the Hooligans off with the knife that he had on him.
- He alongside Kel go to confront Aubrey at the church after fighting the rest of the Hooligans in order to get Basil's photo album back, which she had stolen from him to "keep it safe".
- When he and Kel find Basil seemingly being tormented by Aubrey and the Hooligans at the old Hangout Spot, they once more attempt to stop them, being willing to take on all six of them in order to do so despite the obvious disadvantage.
- When Aubrey accidentally pushes Basil into the lake, Sunny jumps in to save him at Kel's request, despite his own inability to swim, risking himself drowning for the sake of saving his friend.
- Assisting Kel and Hero in confronting Aubrey at her house, they manage to bring her back to her senses using the photo album and Mari's old photos, making her see the error in her ways and redeeming herself.
- Comforted Aubrey by joining her, Kel, and Hero in a group hug when she began breaking down from guilt of how she treated Basil.
- He, alongside Hero, Aubrey, and Kel, all go to Basil's house so that they can be there for him when he's ready to talk.
- Upon finding out the truth of what he had done to Mari, he has the choice of confronting Basil in his room, saving him from ending his own life.
- Would end up in a brutal fight with Basil that would cause him to get badly injured, but also managing to stop Basil from completely falling into his delusions as well.
- After defeating Omori and managing to forgive himself, he goes to Basil's hospital room where his friends are waiting and is strongly implied to have told them the truth of what happened to Mari.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Ultimately, a large amount of his morality is based on player choice. As while he is capable of performing many admirable and selfless deeds, he is also able to continue falling further into his own delusions by not answering the door for Kel, this includes on the "2 Days Left" part of the game, where he can ignore Kel even after he has seen how bad things have gotten outside. In worse examples, he is also able to decide against helping Basil on his last day, leading to him taking his own life. While it's true that he feels remorse for this, the fact that he has the ability to repeat his previous behavior and it ends up getting another close friend killed while also leaving everyone else in the dark about what really happened to Mari despite just learning what really happened makes him too inconsistent for Near Pure Good or Pure Good.
- As revealed at the end of the game's good ending, Sunny had been the one to scribble out all of Basil's photos in his photo album, with this being the thing to cause Aubrey to turn on him and become a bully due to believing that Basil being the one to do it. While it can be assumed that he eventually came clean about this alongside admitting the truth about Mari at the end of the game, this is never confirmed and relies on speculation, leaving this particular corrupting quality unsubverted.
Trivia[]
- A Manga adaptation of OMORI is set to release Spring 2024, it is unknown if Sunny's status will stay the same in said adaptation.
