Sunny: She's my sister, I thought that I could trust her.

Bajie: Yeah. Like you thought you could trust... Quinn? Pilgrim? Even M.K.!
Sunny: Alright I get it.
Bajie: No you don't get it. You blunder blindly from one drama to the next trying to find answers, when in fact you have no idea what the question is.
Sunny: I am doing this for Henry.
Bajie: You know what when Henry's old enough and he asks me about you, you know what I'm gonna say? I'm gonna say "Your dad was a good, brave man, but he died because he wouldn't listen!"

~ Bajie giving a summary of Sunny's character.

Sunny, also known as Sanzō, is the main protagonist of the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the Regent of Baron Quinn and considered to be the most skilled Clipper in all of the Badlands. In truth, he is one of the long lost children of Azra and has dark chi powers known as the Gift locked inside of him, resulting in his superior fighting abilities. After learning that his wife Veil is pregnant, he begins searching for a way to escape so they can raise their child in a place safe from the violence of the Badlands.

He was portrayed by Daniel Wu.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Despite being raised as a trained killer by Quinn, he breaks away from this gradually, refusing his orders to murder two doctors in their territory and eventually plotting to abandon the Armadillo Territory altogether in order to get his wife Veil and son Henry to safety. He even goes as far as to stop receiving Clipper tattoos that are meant to commemorate the number of kills that a Clipper has carried out for their Baron.
  • When he discovers M.K., a boy with the Gift, Sunny begins training him to fight so that he can defend himself and together the two of them try to discover a way for M.K. to control his Gift so he will not harm anyone else.
  • After a group of Dark Ones Abbots come to the Badlands to abduct M.K., Sunny fights them despite the fact that their Gift puts them at an unbeatable advantage, suggesting that he was willing to die if it meant preventing M.K. from being taken.
  • Once he is sold into slavery by the River King and ends up in the Badlands, he and his traveling companion Bajie go on a journey to get back into the Badlands so they can find Veil and Henry and keep them safe from Quinn.
  • When Sunny and Bajie go to a smuggler named Nos for his help in getting into the Badlands, Sunny finds that Nos owns sex slaves known as Dolls, and decides to turn against Nos to save them despite knowing that it will squander his chance of getting back to his family.
  • During their travels through the Badlands, Sunny and Bajie find out about M.K.'s location, and Sunny drops his quest to find his family in order to save M.K. from the Abbots.
  • Sunny eventually makes it back to the Badlands and attacks Quinn's bunker. While he ultimately cannot save Veil, he does save Henry and goes into hiding to keep him safe.
  • Once Henry develops the Gift as an infant, Sunny realizes it will kill him if he doesn't find a cure, and he and Bajie travel across the world looking for something that can save him. They eventually find Pilgrim, a powerful false messiah with the power to remove the Gift, who Sunny enlists in curing Henry. Once Henry has been cured of the Gift, Sunny realizes the danger that Pilgrim poses and being fighting against him.
  • Despite learning that both he and Pilgrim are lost children of Azra, Sunny wants nothing to do with Pilgrim's mission to conquer the world in the name of Azra. During the final battle for the Badlands, Sunny sacrifices his life in order to kill Pilgrim, after having a sword stabbed in his chest Sunny pulls it out of himself through sheer willpower and proceeds to stab Pilgrim in the chest, ensuring that the world is safe from Pilgrim's conquest.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • During their time as children in Azra, Sunny would beat Pilgrim viciously whenever they would spar together.
  • He was brainwashed into a remorseless killer by Quinn, and it's made clear that at one point he did enjoy killing. He has 404 Clipper tattoos, with each tattoo representing a kill taken for his Baron, and Sunny admits that he can't even remember the face of the people that he has killed. Furthermore, it's eventually revealed Sunny killed M.K.'s mother, and doesn't remember doing it even after being told by M.K. that he did it.
  • The way that him and M.K. meet is by Sunny kidnapping him so that he can take him to the Armadillo Territory to train him as a Clipper.
  • When the Widow's adoptive daughter Tilda is captured and brought to the Armadillo Territory, Quinn orders Sunny to torture her for information. Although Sunny does seem reluctant to do so, he does almost go through with it and is implied to have done it to others in the past.
  • He can be a real jerk at times, such as threatening Bajie when they first meet, or telling Veil that they should terminate her pregnancy when he first finds out about it.
  • When he takes Henry to travel the Badlands, he effectively abandons M.K. to be a prisoner in the Widow's territory.
  • While it's likely a product of being raised by Quinn, he be rather sexist as he was taught that girls can't be capable fighters.
  • He helps Pilgrim to open the Meridian Chamber despite Bajie warning him not to as it would give Pilgrim unlimited control over the Gift. He even lets Pilgrim imprison Bajie when the latter tries to destroy the Meridian Chamber despite Bajie being his only remaining friend. He claims this is all so that Pilgrim can remove Henry's Gift, but Bajie rightfully points out that saving Henry is pointless if Pilgrim destroys the world in the name of Azra.
  • When he is reunited with his long lost sister Kannin, he trusts her blindly despite how much that has backfired on him in the past, and she ends up tricking him. Bajie proceeds to give a scathing breakdown of the fact that Sunny is going to get himself killed if he doesn't listen to reason, and that will result in Henry growing up without a father.
