Good morning USA, I've got a feeling that's it's gonna be a wonderful day, the sun in the sky has a smile on his face, and he's shining a salute to the American race.

~ Stan Smith
Stanford "Stan" Leonard Smith is the titular protagonist of the American Dad! franchise. He is a CIA agent who is Francine's husband, Steve and Hayley's father, Roger's stepson, Klaus' owner and Jeff Fischer's stepfather-in-law. Although he is often viewed as a protagonist villain, he is sometimes shown with redeeming qualities of a protagonist as he is a "brave patriotic hero of the United States" who occasionally has several heroic roles.
Joining the dangerous street racing competition may have been a dangerous decision he made, but since he did this to please Francine from her misery, this motive may be understandable.
While beating up Bullock may have been a bad idea to start with, but since Stan did this to defend Hayley's honor, this may be justified in his perspective.
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
He regularly goes on dangerous CIA missions to protect his country he loves from any threats.
He goes to a refuge camp and teaches them the values of fun, gives them clothes and helps them free themselves from the tyranny of armed men. In fairness, he genuinely thinks it’s a summer camp so this is more of an accidental good deed.
He killed a genocidal war criminal as part of a mission.
He killed a Swedish terrorist who was going to blow up a cafe full of innocent people.
He has a tragic past, due to himself growing up with a neglectful criminal father who went as far as watching him have sex with a prostitute and hid their home address from him so he wouldn’t give it up if he was interrogated, leaving him a homeless wanderer for some time.
When he realised his father was manipulating him to participate in a jewel heist he refused to help him. When Jack then apologised for his actions Stan let him go, giving him a chance to be a better person and stop his criminal ways.
Although he initially didn’t know it is secretly a drug trade, he managed to open a garbage business.
His future self traveled back in time to express his regrets for his mistreatment of Francine, further showing that he can be remorseful for his crimes and trying his best to fix any of his mistakes at times, especially in the early series.
He occasionally makes the attempt to help and support his family, as well as those close to him at times.
He rescued Roger from being experimented on by the CIA at the expense of his own safety and provided him shelter with his family.
He overcame his ability to carry the 1981 Assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan because he felt that his kids would never be born.
He purposefully got himself imprisoned so he could save his family when they were sentenced to execution in Saudi Arabia.
He felt bad for guilting Hayley into promoting pro-gun propaganda and performed an anti-gun song with her.
He moves himself in front of a bullet in order to save Hayley in "Stannie Got Your Gun".
Teams up with Hayley to prevent a bombing at the Bazooka Sharks football stadium.
He save Francine's life in "Francine's Flashback" and in "Finances with Wolves".
He save Steve from falling off of a building in "Roots" and prevent his loathsome tyranny as a result of being unpopular in high school in the Pilot. He also comforts him when he is upset Lisa Silverman only liked him because he was class president.
He saves Jeff from being wrongfully detained in "Joint Custody".
He rescues Tuttle from being imprisoned in the 1950’s television.
He does everything he can to protect a tree that nurtured him as a child.
He brings back a 50's restaurant when he finds out it was closing.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
As with the rest of the other characters in this show, he is highly On & Off, due to him usually being a villain protagonist with a lot of Kick the Dog moments and MEH crossings where he usually acts selfish, inconsiderate, corrupt, sociopathic, and many times as villainous to the point of being Inconsistently Heinous, where he easily stands out regarding the show’s heinous standards.
Even on the side of good, he is generally regarded to be more of an anti-hero and a Hero by Proxy because he does heroic acts out of self serving or selfish reasons in most occasions, most notably in “Rapture’s Delight”, where he selfishly promised Jesus that he can be raptured if he agrees to save Francine and the world, though he later apologizes to Francine for blaming her in not letting him get raptured.
He often attempts to assault, murder, or oppress anyone who isn’t a straight, white, mentally able and well-built male or if they get in his own way.
When he supposedly learns his lessons at the end in some episodes, he always forget about his confession and continues to commit many crimes.
He is a wrathful, selfish, idiotic, and stubborn jerk around anyone he encounters and doesn’t care who ends up injured, tortured or offended in his shenanigans, especially his family.
He is regularly incompetent and often causes chaos due to this.
He is constantly neglectful and abusive to his family and going drastic measures to “fix” them, especially Francine and Hayley.
Examples are he will toughen up Steve and sometimes being embarrassed by him.
He insulted Francine for being stupid and being misogynistic towards her.
He disrespected Hayley’s Democratic and Liberal views and calling her a pothead.
He has proven himself to be a hypocrite on multiple occasions, such as forcing his daughter to stop texting when he does it himself, causing him to crash his car.
Like other CIA agents, he is incredibly disrespectful towards Dick.
