| “ | I guess you're right, Plankton. I am just a kid. (…) And you know, I've been through a lot in the past six days, five minutes, twenty-seven and a half seconds. | ~ SpongeBob's speech in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. |
SpongeBob SquarePants is the titular main protagonist of the franchise of the same name.
SpongeBob is a childish, joyful, hardworking, silly, and sometimes clumsy sea sponge who lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a job in which he is exceptionally skilled at and enjoys thoroughly. He attends Mrs. Puff's Boating School, and his greatest dream in life is to receive his boating license. Unfortunately, he tenses up whenever he has to drive a boatmobile, and he drives recklessly by speeding, crashing into buildings, etc., which causes him to fail every time. SpongeBob is very good-natured and loves to hang out with his best friend, Patrick. His teacher is Mrs. Puff, and his boss is Mr. Krabs.
He is voiced by Tom Kenny. In the Korean dub, Jeon Tae-yeol dubbed him, who also does Plagg in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir and Obanai Iguro in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train in the theatrical version
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]

- Even though SpongeBob was initially upset with Mr. Krabs for not making him the manager for the Krusty Krab 2 and even rudely (yet somewhat rightfully) calling Mr. Krabs a big jerk, he immediately gets over it as he was willing to defend him against King Neptune when he was about to kill him. When he thought that King Neptune was going to kill Mr. Krabs for not making him the manager, he tells him that being manager ain't worth killing him over.
- He agreed to go to Shell City despite warnings that he will not survive.
- He brought the Crown back to King Neptune.

And after Sandy feels upset with herself after Sue reveals that Sandy worked for Sue in the past and helped set the Bikini Bottom citizens up for capture, he motivates Sandy to give up on saving Bikini Bottom.
- In Plankton: The Movie, he teamed up with the Gal Pals and Patrick to stop Karen from taking over the world by making Plankton apologize to her, saved Plankton from nearly being killed by her despite manipulating him and provoking Karen in the first place, and calling him out for his selfishness which influenced him to sincerely apologize to Karen and make her abandon her conquest. After her defeat, he stopped the Bikini Bottomites from attacking Plankton and Karen because he was touched by their romance together.
- While SpongeBob snapped at Plankton for his selfishness before leaving him, his reaction was justified since Plankton caused Karen's rampage in the first place by insulting her and manipulated him into helping him destroy her instead of making things right with her, and was unwilling to take accountability from his mistakes at first to the point he had to be given Karen's empathy chip in order to care about the problem.
- In The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, he wants to prove he's brave enough to ride a roller coaster, and decides to become a pirate.

- After Mr. Krabs encourages SpongeBob to embrace himself, he gains the courage to conquer his fears of roller coaster and his bubble-blowing skills to destroy the hornpipe and break the curse before sunset.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While he doesn't hurt people intentionally (without good reason), he is still very reckless, careless and irresponsible when endangering other people's lives and well-being in his adventures, being responsible for mass property damage and manslaughter. This incompetence is a minor prevention, as SpongeBob has sometimes been shown to do things perfectly without trying.
- While he is naïve, there are times where it doesn't properly justify him doing immoral actions like when he willingly assisted Mr. Krabs with stealing an entire hotel room just so the latter could win the Cheapskate of the Year Award, when he willingly assisted Mr. Krabs in poisoning a health inspector who was only doing his job due to thinking he was an imposter trying to get free food after hearing about it on the news (not to mention he outright admitted that it felt good), and when he was successfully convinced by Plankton to ruin the Goo Lagoon Residents' Day (though he does show remorse for the last two).
- While he's generally very responsible and honorable; he's not above lying and playing dirty to get what he wants or boost his reputation as seen in episodes "Just One Bite", "Blackened Sponge", "Chocolate With Nuts", "MuscleBob BuffPants", "No Weenies Allowed", "Pranks A Lot", "Bubble Buddy", and "The Secret Box".
- He is an notorious and constant prankster. While most of his pranks are harmless, some pranks are extreme or able to get out of control as seen in "Scaredy Pants", "Pranks A Lot", "Opposite Day", "Frankendoodle", and "Survival of The Idiots".
- In "Mid-Life Crustacean", his and Patrick's attempt to make Krabs feel younger in their night out left much to be desired as it involved them committing childish antics from watch their faces spin in the mirror reflection of a washing machine to invading a woman's house at night to steal her underpants (the last made them coming off as a pervert despite intentions behind it being pure mischief instead of genuine malice).
- To make matters worse, the duo claimed that they "score here all the time", which means that they had done this multiple times before. Additionally, unlike Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and Patrick get no punishment for doing this.
- In "Pressure", he mocks Sandy Cheeks for being a land creature alongside Krabs, Patrick and Squidward. When she takes off her air helmet and begins to drown, he breathes in and out alongside Krabs in order to mock her even further, and even calls her an airhead after she's forced to wear a pickle jar.
- Despite mostly being kind and friendly, there are times where he can act like a jerk, as shown in "Graveyard Shift" where he, thinking he and Squidward are about to be killed by the Hash-Slinging Slasher, confesses to Squidward that he has used the former's clarinet to unclog his toilet (although it was likely more of a comic moment to tone down the episode's overall creepy atmosphere) and in "Porous Pockets", where he lets his sudden wealth, status and popularity go to his head and becomes an arrogant snob who even cast Patrick (who was then his best friend) aside in favor of his countless superficial "friends", who actually just came close to SpongeBob out of financial interest rather than out of a genuine desire for friendship.
- He can let his envy get the better of him, such as always wanting to be the best employee of the month at the Krusty Krab, despite Squidward not caring about it.
- He is wrathful, as shown when he strangled Mr. Krabs for refusing to hire Squidward back (although Mr. Krabs arguably deserved it for accusing Squidward of doing something he didn't do, and it was also understandable since Squidward was driving him insane by constantly taking advantage of his hospitality), got angry at Patrick for supposedly breaking his new toy and furiously yelling at Squidward in jealousy when he was pogo dancing with Patrick (although he did feel remorse and apologize for this, even though Squidward wasn't able to listen due to getting electrocuted).
- When Patrick argues with Neptune of how many days SpongeBob can make it back with his crown, he and Krabs brutally beat up Patrick just to shut him.
- He was willing to trip Sandy while they were running from an Alaskan Bull Worm, which would have gotten her eaten by it if she didn't admit she was wrong on its size, just so he could have the satisfaction of her admitting that he was right. This didn't help by SpongeBob's insistence to do nothing regarding such threat.
- He's also a control freak, as shown when he demanded his party to go exactly the way he planned it and got mad at the guests when they started enjoying the party, and when he got too picky and strict with the way Squidward and Patrick were working and forced them to do it perfectly when standing in for Mr. Krabs while he was injured.
- In recent episodes, he starts blaming people for his own personal problems that have nothing to do with anyone.
- He is quite mischievous (in a bad way) as he and Patrick repeatedly bother Squidward for no reason, notably barging into his home uninvited, which is trespassing, practically making them both one of the main reasons why Squidward is always grouchy and miserable (along with Mr. Krabs' mistreatment towards him at work).
- He is very willing to get others harmed for trivial reasons. Some examples include him assisting Mr. Krabs on several occasions in endangering the health of the customers, attacking other characters in fits of rage at times, and killing a bunch of sentient clams over a Krabby Patty.
- He and Patrick are responsible for Man Ray and the Dirty Bubble being villains by time traveling back when they were babies and revealing their future to them. Otherwise, Man Ray and the Dirty Bubble would be even superheroes if it weren't for them.
- He can be a hypocrite from time to time such as in the episode One Coarse Meal when Plankton asked him to step on him in a way of suicide which SpongeBob rejected claiming that it flies in the face of his good nature, yet he has done some immoral actions prior to this episode and would still do time to time in the future (it also doesn't help that in the same episode he betrays Plankton by joining Mr. Krabs in tormenting him over his fear of whales), gets mad at others for being annoying and clingy to others as he does yet he annoys Squidward a lot of the time, and threw a prison guard in a cell for throwing away an unfinished Krabby Patty, which is not even a misdemeanor, when he once nearly threw away a fresh batch that Squidward made out of arrogant belief that he was the better fry cook in Fresh Breath of Squidward.
- His biggest prevention from being Near Pure Good is being On & Off, since he committed heinous acts several times such as in the comic "CreamBob ConePants", where he and Patrick ate the entire population of Pint Bottom and in the episode "The String", where his actions of finding the titular string caused Bikini Bottom and all of reality to break apart.
Trivia[]
- He was the very first Inconsistently Admirable ever proposed.
- Like many other characters on this wiki, he was originally Pure Good for a while. However, when the admirable standards changed so that heroes who are too jerkish and mischievous can't qualify (though the Pure Good criteria has changed over the years, saying that mischievous heroes can qualify as Pure Good if their mischief is harmless and doesn't go too far or cause serious trouble for innocents), he was removed due to these inconsistencies explained below.
- Ironically, there is also currently a Pure Good version of him, as well.
- He is the current icon of Inconsistently Admirable Wiki, as well as the icon of the Cleanup Template.
- If the series ended after the first movie as planned, or his flanderization in season 6B to season 7 never happened, he still would have been too corrupting for Near Pure Good since he helped Mr. Krabs murder the health inspector and outright went on a panty raid.
- Ironically, his paternal 7x great-grandfather, SpongeBuck SquarePants, is Near Pure Good.
- SpongeBob was the first approved Inconsistently Admirable character, while Darth Vader was the first approved Inconsistently Heinous character. Coincidentally, both SpongeBob and Vader share the same moral rankings and have been headlined on both wikis.
- He, Anakin Skywalker, Kratos and Walter White are the only characters to be Headlined Inconsistently Admirable and Headlined Inconsistently Heinous.
