You've been chasing the wrong thing. It wasn't the symbiote that gave me powers, that made me who I am. It never was! The costume didn't make me Spawn, because...
I AM SPAWN!
~ Spawn to Violator.

Albert “Al” Francis Simmons is the titular main protagonist of the Spawn comic book series. He was a highly trained CIA assassin who was murdered by his employer and former friend Chapel. After selling his soul to Malebolgia to see his wife Wanda Blake again, he found he got more than he bargained for, and Malebolgia used Al as the reborn Spawn to do his bidding.

His Good Rankings[]

Debated Validations[]

  • After being reborn as Omega Spawn, he’s given complete and total control over all of Hell by Satan, which he abuses by planning to combine the forces of Hell and Earth to destroy Heaven and imprison God. This causes him to release all the super-villains from Hell and all over the world, attacking all of Earth’s heroes. However, the canonicity of this instance is highly questionable as the storyline for this comic was never finished.

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Joined the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later joined the United States Secret Service and became a highly decorated member, which lead to a promotion to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
  • Took down street gangs and organized crime in New York City and found a new purpose in stopping evil.
  • Formed a close friendship with local bums in the Bowery Alleyways; he then called it his new home and claimed they were under his protection.
  • For Terry Fitzgerald, he took a bullet to the face.
  • Protected his friend Terry from Overtkill and Tony Twist, who thought Terry was the culprit behind the Violator’s killing spree of mobs.
  • Used his powers to bring Bobby back to life after Chapel killed him.
  • In Heaven, he attempts to testify for Angela, though it ultimately fails.
  • Helped Andy and Eddie Frank with their abusive father in Georgia.
  • Saved Bobby from Redeemer due to having necroplasm in him after being resurrected.
  • Used his powers to cure Terry’s cancer, despite the warnings from Cog.
  • Works together with Terry to put a stop to Wynn.
  • Stopped the man initially responsible for the murders in New York City, even though they continued.
  • Tracked down the demon linked to Billy Kincaid with the help of Twitch and Sam.
  • Pulled a Dimensional Lance, a heavenly forged weapon from the Hellspawn Archives and was not harmed.
  • Interrupted a ritual to stop members of a group from sacrificing themselves to Urizen.
  • With the help of Angela, he returns to Hell and destroys Malebolgia, although Angela’s life was lost in the process.
  • When Mammon offered Spawn Malebolgia's crown, he declines and instead turns his efforts towards defeating the evil on Earth.
  • Went to find Twitch's boy Max Williams IV, who ran away from home some time ago.
  • Took in the evil in man's soul to prevent them from being attacked by the Kingdom.
  • Freed Major Forsberg from his prison as a sign of good will.
  • Attempts to use his powers to save Cogliostro from dying but was stopped by him pleading to leave him be.
  • Motivates Twitch by telling him that people move on once they experience loss and offered him a chance to save his son, Max.
  • Saves Twitch’s son, Max as a ghost and reunites him with his family.
  • Does what he can to stop Wanda’s twin children, the ones responsible for Armageddon from murdering her entire family, even though he loses.
  • Spares Judas after Cyan begged him not to kill him.
  • Uses his powers bestowed upon him by the Mother to recreate Earth and restore all life, closing every door between Hell, Heaven and Earth.
  • Forms a friendship with Nyx, one of Spawn’s enemies.
  • After being transported into a boat in a lake with Wanda, like the location where Al Simmons and Wanda Blake once had a boat ride together, he finally rejects his symbiotic costume.
  • Convinces Wanda to return to Earth with Nyx and Cyan, giving her a last farewell and an apology for the life they never had together, later staying behind and searching for a way to be reborn as a new individual and no more a tool of Hell and Heaven. He then begins his last voyage as journeys the hellish dimension paved with discarded souls as a path of retribution.
  • Puts a protection spell on Terry and his family, preventing them from being bothered by the forces of Hell.
  • Battles Satan and saves Wanda with the help of God, who was able to send her to heaven. He later returns to Earth, finally closing the portals of Hell and Heaven in exchange for most of his powers.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He’s too much of an extremist, and whilst also being a well-intentioned one at the same, he tends to use brutal techniques to get his ways:
    • After defeating Tiffany, he became cranky and full of hatred which caused him to betray Tremor on a mission, despite forming an alliance with him.
    • Even though he did rid NYC of crime, he did so in a rather brutal fashion.
    • He escorts his dad Bernard Simmons, who was suffering from terminal cancer to the point of judgement (though he was threatened by Belial to do this, so he might not have had any other choice).
  • Often times, he comes across as wrathful and jerkish towards other people, including his allies:
    • Rather than thanking Nyx for restoring his power, Spawn was at first furious at her for doing so.
    • Spawn’s friendship with Terry becomes strained over time, displaying jealousy and anger over his relationship with Wanda.
    • After being saved by God in Spawn: Resurrection, he shows no gratitude towards him and states he still doesn't believe in God.
  • His years of being an assassin in his previous life have made him rather lethal to be considered Near Pure Good and while a lot of these kill are justified and understandable, it's still a corrupting factor considering he's taken just as much innocent lives as he has with not-so innocent lives:
    • Even before his time as Spawn, he displayed murderous intentions as an assassin, and although merely carrying out orders given to him, there are very little to no instances of Al showing remorse for his kills.
    • Upon Violator’s return, he gave up on trying to save a group of people after being overpowered by his clown army which led to Spawn pulling the pin on a grenade which killed many innocent people.
    • In the events of Spawn: The Undead, he began interfering with people's lives and let them choose death instead of being the afterlife’s pawns.
    • While he did destroy the corrupt armies of Heaven and Hell with the Mother’s powers, this also led to the destruction of humanity (however, he did use the Mother of Existence's power to restore them, so this is a minor prevention).
    • During the Pre-Endgame era, he almost kills his wife Wanda, which makes Cyan afraid of him
    • After he reconstructed the universe with the Mother's power, it was revealed that he inflicted a miscarrage upon Wanda by beating her the last night before dying.
  • He is rather misanthropic and nihilistic towards humanity as shown on a few occasions:
    • After failing to save the Erskine's next victim, Spawn doubts himself and thinks he’s unable to save a few people from death – let alone the entire world. When revealed that Mammon was using Erskine's powers to project a psychic projection which melts away, Spawn kneels and accepts the belief that whatever he tries to do goes wrong and is no longer needed by the world.
    • During Spawn: The Undead, he also passed judgement on those he viewed were unworthy to live.

Trivia[]

  • So far, he is the only character from his comic book series to be Inconsistently Admirable
    • He is also, along with Omni-Man, one of the only two Image Comics characters to be Inconsistently Admirable
  • Spawn was inspired by Venom, Prowler, and Ghost Rider. He was also created by Todd to be the combination of Superman with some of Batman and Spider-Man in between.
  • Unintentionally, Spawn has one of, if not the, highest kill counts out of any Inconsistently Admirable comic book character, due to the fact his victory against the armies of Heaven and Hell led to the deaths of all the population on Earth, which contains billions, as well as countless more throughout his universe. This makes him one of the most lethal anti-heroes in all comic books and other similar media.
