Solid Snake, real name David, is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Big Boss) of the Metal Gear franchise. He is the protagonist of the Solid Snake saga.
He was one of the first clones of Big Boss, who became a special spy and mercenary, he was extremely efficient in stealth and combat. His career was so successful and outstanding that he was considered by many as the most legendary warrior of the twentieth century.
He was voiced by David Hayter.

What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Despite always denying himself as a hero, he was actually a true noble and incorruptible soldier who always knew what things are right to do and what wrong things to avoid.
- For the right things, he always determined to finish them no matter what, so that he could not let anybody down.
- He could easily empathize with other people and was ready to inspire them in fixing their mistakes and continuing their heroic journeys. He was also a forgiving person who was ready to forgive many villains, notably Big Boss.
- At the end, he nobly defeated many evil factions, thus proving himself one of the only people who actually understood The Boss's will, which he accepted the world as it is and tried his best to improve it; rather than changing it like Big Boss or Ocelot did.
- Overall, he was an extremely noble soldier who did his best to save the world, protect his loved ones and the innocents, even if he had to go through many harsh condidtions, such as torture or microwave chamber.
Metal Gear (1987)[]
- He accepted the mission to intrude the Outer Heaven base in South Africa, to save the captured Gray Fox from getting possibly killed, as well as to destroy the developing Metal Gear TX-55 from possibly launching nuke.
- He got himself purposely captured so that he could get inside the enemies' base easier. He then freed a lot of prisoners of war.
- He tried to locate Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar, who was behind building the Metal Gear. Along his way, he also helped the resistance members from doing the missions.
- He rescued both Dr. Madnar and his daughter Ellen from the enemies.
- With the help of Resistance members, he successfully destroyed TX-55 Metal Gear, ending its possibility of launching nuke.
- After he had gotten betrayed by Big Boss, who revealed himself to be the commander of Outer Heaven base, he quickly defeated him (who turned out to be Venom Snake), then successfully escaped while ensuring others' safety.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake[]
- After Operation Intrude N313, he decided to abandon Big Boss's CQC technique because he was betrayed by the latter.
- After knowing about the OILIX development, as well as another Metal Gear called Metal Gear D, he quickly enacted and commenced his new operation.
- He aided his fellow CIA agent Holly White in doing her missions.
- He located Gustava Heffner and asked her to help in translating Dr. Kio Marv's information.
- After he had betrayed by Dr. Madnar, and got Gustava killed, he then mourned her death and gave her a proper burial after successfully retrieving the OILIX formula.
- After destroying Metal Gear D, he gave his friend Gray Fox an honorable duel and defeated him as the latter requested. He then defeated and tried to kill Big Boss for real this time.
- He successfully saved Holly and escaped from Zanzibar Land with her.
Metal Gear Solid[]
- After many years in hiding/retirement, he decided to return in action due to Colonel Campbell's insist, in response to the Shadow Moses incident, which included the development of Metal Gear Rex, which was known to be the strongest ever Metal Gear in history.
- He then rescued Kenneth Baker from getting exploded, although the latter unfortunately died of FOXDIE.
- He met a FOXHOUND rookie named Meryl Silverburgh and they aided each other in their missions, he also helped her defeating many enemies who tried to harm her.
- After going through a part of the mission, he encountered a mysterious cyborg ninja, who turned out to be Gray Fox, he then gave him one last honorable duel.
- After defeating Gray Fox, he met Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, who expressed his deep regret of developing the Metal Gear. Snake then reassured him that he could still easily fix his past mistakes, they together formed a strong friendship and always supported each other.
- Along the way, he also defeated several dangerous enemies, such as Revolver Ocelot or Vulcan Raven's tank army.
- He defeated Psycho Mantis and freed Meryl from being mind controlled. During the fight, he tried to hit Meryl as little as possible, just enough to make her unconscious.
- After both him and Meryl had gotten captured, he resisted Ocelot's painful torture many times, so that Meryl could be safe.
- After defeating Sniper Wolf and Vulcan Raven, he sympathized with them and mourned their deaths, especially for the former, as he mourned her death also for Otacon's sake.
- At the end, he finally found the Metal Gear Rex and tried to disable it.
- After it turned out to be a trick from Liquid, who disguised as Master Miller, he still did not give up, but rather successfully destroyed Rex and defeated Liquid. While defeating Rex, he also allowed Gray Fox to sacrifice himself and atone for his misdeeds.
- He saved Meryl and they together escaped from Shadow Moses.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty[]
- Shortly before the events of the game, he decided to break up with Meryl, in order to fight for his own ideals. He then started to found the Philantropy, along with his best friend Otacon, to fight against corruption and evil conspiracies.
- Following the Manhattan Tanker Incident, he then joined Otacon to the mysterious Tanker in order to retreive the information of the new Metal Gear Ray, so that they could expose it to the world.
- After getting sabotaged by external factions, him and Otacon quickly escaped, and then Snake faked his death after getting branded as a "terrorist" so that he could ensure others' safety and to continue his noble missions.
- Two years later, following the Big Shell Incident, he continued the mission with Otacon, this time as a hidden identity called Iroquois Pliskin, so that he could stop the new Metal Gear (called Arsenal Gear) from being in action.
- He then encountered Raiden, eventually started to aid him in his missions, including defusing Fatman's bomb and helping him fight against Solidus Snake's Harrier.
- He helped Raiden in escorting Emma Emmerich to his location. He even (optionally) assisted him during the escort.
- When Emma died because of Vamp's stab wound, him, along with Otacon, reassured her that her virus worked so that she could die peacefully and honorably.
- He reassured and calmed Otacon down, so that he could focus on evacuating the citizens to safety.
- He fake antagonized Raiden so that both of them could successfully infiltrate the Arsenal Gear, in order to destroy it. After reuniting with him, he tried to reassure with Raiden that he could still move on and continue living as a hero. This helped Raiden keep doing many heroic deeds, including saving Sunny from the Patriots.
- He made an ultimate speech about life and how we can still keep the world in the way it is.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots[]
- After getting really old due to accelerated aging in his genes, he still continued doing the right thing, so that the world could be safe.
- After knowing about Liquid Ocelot's plan to abolish the Outer Haven, he then quickly acted to save the world one last time. He started his operations by trying to assassinate him in Middle East, but failed.
- In South America, he helped he eventually helped the Resistance members in winning their battle, as well as to find Dr. Naomi Hunter so that she could collaborate with the heroes one last time, he also forgave her. He then defeated Laughing Octopus and stopped the chaos caused by her.
- He rescued Raiden during the missions and accepted his request to come to Eastern Europe before the latter's temporary collapse.
- After meeting EVA/Big Mama and listened to her about many mysteries from the past, he eventually started to understand Big Boss and Revolver Ocelot's motives and started to sympathize with them.
- He then saved Big Mama from the enemies soldier by eliminating them. He then defeated Raging Raven so that people could ensure safety.
- After knowing about the true culprit behind the Patriots, who happened to be many AIs controlling the organization, especially GW AI, he then determined to stop them once and for all.
- He decided to move back to Shadow Moses, in order to permanently destroy Metal Gear Rex, although it could give him PTSD.
- He then battled Liquid as well as Crying Wolf, with the help of Raiden.
- After his second Shadow Moses operation, he then returned so that he could infiltrate Outer Haven, stopping the AIs once and for all.
- He strongly asked Raiden to stop sacrificing himself for his sake, so that Raiden could ensure his future. He then went through the extremely hot microwave chamber so that he could end the GW and other Patriots AIs.
- He had a final honorable fight with Liquid (and later Ocelot). And after he defeated Ocelot, he earned a genuine respect from the latter, even Ocelot give him a nod "you're pretty good!". The same nod that Big Boss give to many decades ago.
- At the end of the game, he encountered Big Boss, who happened to survive the Zanzibar Land Uprising, they then had a heart to heart talk as he managed to forgive and burying the hatchet with his father and he was motivated by Big Boss to keep living.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Although he was an extremely noble and incorruptible hero who doesn't possess any shady or malicious qualities, he was still an assassin who killed many people for his missions, making him too lethal for NPG.
- He usually killed people in first resort during his operations, even when not needed, without even apprehending them, making him a ruthless assassin. Although many targets of his were bad people, he still took it too far, as many of his victims might not be villains at all, just simply soldiers following orders.
- His killing methods were also really brutal, which involved breaking enemies' arms.
- Due to his antisocial personality, he was known to be a huge jerk towards others. Even though he deeply cared for his friends and actively helped them, he still behaved very rudely and disrespectfully towards them occasionally, for instances.
- When Sunny Emmerich made fried eggs for him, he coldly responded "I don't remember the sun being so flat", which upset Sunny.
- When his team were listening to briefing, he just interrupted and asked for a smoke.
- Although this is a minor prevention, after he had accepted Holly White's invitation to Christmas dinner, he seemed not to response and went hiding in Alaska right away. Even Colonel Campbell said that it was not the first time he went hiding without noticing others.
Trivia[]
- Interestingly, the big three heroes of the first Metal Gear Solid have three different heroic rankings. While Snake is Inconsistently Admirable, Otacon and Meryl are Pure Good and Near Pure Good respectively.
