Snotface Snotlout is a major antagonist in Cressinda Cowell's How to Train Your Dragon books, turned anti-hero in the book How to Betray a Dragon's Hero.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes him Admirable?[]
- Even though he originally didn't want to and had to be threathened by Thuggory, he helped Hiccup in his plan to save the isle from an attacking Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus which also caused the village to accept the banished initiates back.
- He goes with many other hooligans to the Island of Skullions to help find Grimbeard the Ghastly's treasure, Snotlout is also the one who actually finds it alongside Fireworm and brings it back to Stoick.
- When Toothless gives the Hooligans an opening during Alvin's assault on the ship as they are returning to Berk with Grimbeard's treasure, he fights against the outcasts despite being much smaller and inexperienced, which earns him and the other young vikings a Black Star.
- He accompanies Stoick when he sends a war party to Fort Sinister to confront the Romans.
- After being talked down during his duel with Hiccup, he helped him stay by fighting off the Alvinsmen together and accepting each other instead of prolonging their feud.
- Having realized how awful he's been to Hiccup after Alvin and Excellinor's repeated attempts to kill him, he decides to make amends with his cousin and let go of his anger and hate.
- After Hiccup got his King's Things back, Snotlout tracked his boat down to apologize and repent for his past actions, accepting Hiccup's dragon mark and abandoning his jealousy while also coming up with an idea to distract Alvin while Hiccup escapes.
- He distracted the forces of Alvin the Treacherous and his mother Excellinor by using himself as bait while pretending to be Hiccup so that the real Hiccup can escape, while making sure that his cousin got to safety, which ultimately took his life as he is shot down by Alvin, sacrificing his life for Hiccup and showing he was a changed man.
- His actions allowed Hiccup to survive, become King of the WilderWest and bring about an era of change and peace with the dragons, which Hiccup himself acknowledges he would have never accomplished without Snotlout, showing he still remembered his cousin's sacrifice many decades later.
- Unlike the films which introduced several new characters, the books don't have many heroes apart from Camicazi, Gobber, Fishlegs and Hiccup himself, making the admirable standard much lower and allowing Snotlout to stand out for his sacrifice which became the only reason Hiccup could build a harmonius kingdom in Tomorrow and bring about lasting peace between vikings and dragons while he lived while also getting them to befriend new animals and depend less on dragons. Hiccup himself knows that he wouldn't have survived and achieved this without Snotlout's swap out plan.
What Makes him Inconsistent?[]
- He was a full on villain before his redemption as not only was he a constant bully to Hiccup and Fishlegs who tried to constantly kill his cousin in order to become chief, but he eventually joined Alvin the Treacherous and helped enslave all Hooligans including his parents, being the one who whipped them so they would work. While he does redeem himself and tries to atone for his attempts on Hiccup, he never shows any particular remorse for his other tyrannical and heinous actions.
- Before redeeming himself and actually wishing to help Hiccup out of genuine intentions, he only ever helped if it was convinient for him or if he was forced to do it, and even then he made it known how much he despised going along with Hiccup's plans. Stoick himself even acknowledged that he could see all the hate Snotlout had towards his son in the boy's eyes when Snotlout and him talked about Hiccup's whereabouts.
- He is far too jerkish, dishonest, and pragmatic to be NPG:
- He resented Hiccup for accidentally getting him and others banished to Outcast Island even though it was his own fault and Hiccup later undid the banishments.
- He openly harrased Fishlegs with his goons and only ever stopped when an adult was nearby in order to not taint his image.
- When Hiccup lost Toothless and was at a low point in life, Snotlout taunted him about losing his dragon without remorse which led to Hiccup snapping and insulting him back.
- He laughed at Toothless for having a coat during winter even though he was understandably cold.
- Right before his redemption, he challenged Hiccup to a death duel where he blamed him for ruining his life and pinned all his failures and horrible actions on Hiccup's existence itself.
- He is completely full of himself and has a massive ego, wanting everyone to acknowledge him as a superior viking and a better future chief than Hiccup could ever be. He gloats constantly and shows too much skill when not needed, such as when he stripped Wartihog of his clothes and money while fighting him in a training lesson. When the Bog-Burglar chief returned Grimbeard's shield to the Hooligans and Snotlout took it and held it up triumphantly despite having nothing to do with it or the 100-year feud.
- He is very lethal as his main goal was to kill Hiccup and he even went as far as unsheating Dogsbreath's sword so he would accidentally kill Hiccup during training and he whipped dragons into submission when they didn't listen to him.
- In "How to Speak Dragonese", during the Pirate Training Program while participating in the Board-an-enemy-ship lesson, he used his ship "Sparrowhawk" to ram Hiccup and Fishlegs' boat and pass it on as an accident, nearly sinking them and getting them lost at sea.
- Even after getting redeemed he rarely, if ever shows care for human or dragon lives.
- He shows several moments of cowardice as when Alvin invaded the Hooligans' ship and demanded to know who the heir was, Snotlout stayed completely quiet and still (even trying to hide among his peers) even though he had been talking at that very moment with his father about how he was the rightful heir which caused Hiccup to step forward when no one else did. Not to mention he had tried to kill Hiccup in the past so that he could actually become the heir.
Trivia[]
- He is the only HTTYD IA to originate from the books instead of the mainstream franchise.
- His movie counterpart is also IA, though said counterpart is leagues better, much more admirable, and never did anything as heinous as this Snotlout did.
