â | When you're a master thief, there is one golden rule: you only steal from other thieves. | â |
~ Sly Cooper talking about his moral rule. |
â | On this mission, I would either become a master thief like my ancestors before me, or fail and allow my family name to bite the dust. | â |
~ Sly Cooper |
Sly Cooper is the titular main protagonist of the franchise with the same name. He's a thieving raccoon from a long line of master thieves who specialize in stealing from other criminals.
On the night Sly was to inherent the Thievius Raccoonus, a book passed down through generations filled with instructions on how to be a master thief, his family was killed by the Fiendish Five who took and tore it into different pieces for themselves. Alone, he was sent to live in an orphanage where he'd meet two people who would become his best friends and help him retrieve the pages of the book.
He is voiced by Kevin Miller.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Despite being a thief, he holds a moral principle that his family laid the rules for in not stealing from anyone who is not a criminal, but to those who are.
- His bond with Bentley and Murray were that of how brothers would be to each other, meaning not only were they friends to each other, but family as well.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus[]
- He recovers every single page of the family line book as a means to restore their legacy.
- Defeated Sir Raleigh, ending the bad weather produced by his storm machine that plagued the Isle of Wrath, allowing ships to pass safely once again.
- Defeated Muggshot, ending his gambling operation in Mesa City, allowing its thrown-out citizens to return.
- Defeated Mz. Ruby, stopping her from unleashing an army of zombies and spirits across Mexico.
- Defeated Panda King, ending his brutal extortion of local snow villages.
- Insisted on saving Carmelita from Clockwerk's gas chamber despite the trouble she caused him and his gang.
- Destroyed Clockwerk's death ray then defeated him alongside Carmelita.
- When Sly confronted Clockwerk about how worthless he would be without the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly responds that it doesn't take a book to make great thieves but great thieves to make the Thievius Raccoonus, which honored his family tree.
- While he started off as a bit self-centered and dismissive of his friends, referring to Murray as a 'part-time driver full-time burden' and snapping at Bentley on occasion, in the end he showed much more appreciation and respect for them, even claiming he wouldn't have made it as far as he did without them.
Band of Thieves[]
- He and his gang complete heists to get all of Clockwerk's parts before he can be revived by the Klaww Gang.
- He tries to give Dimitri a warning about the consequences of reviving Clockwerk using his body parts.
- Ended Rajan's illegal spice business.
- Brought an end to the Contessa and her corruption within Interpol.
- He, alongside Carmelita and his gang, defeated Clock-La and ended Clockwerk's reign of terror over his family.
Honor Among Thieves[]
- He was successful in redeeming both Dimitri and Panda King by helping the former get out of jail and saving the daughter of the latter from a forced marriage by General Tsao.
- Protected Bentley from Octavio's henchman when he was hacking into his security systems and got information on his plan. Sly also protected him when he was destroying the six tar pumps Octavio had set up to sink buildings in Vence.
- Took down the Blue Vipers, a brutal gang of speed boat drivers, who had been hired by Octavio to kill Carmelita.
- Took photos of Octavio polluting different water sources with tar throughout Venice to send to the cops so they'd be able to arrest him.
- Chased after Octavio and got him to let Bentley, who he tracked down, got a hold of and threatened to use his brains as fertilizer for his tomato plants, go.
- Assured Murray that it wasn't his fault for Bentley being crippled to a wheelchair.
- Tried to convince Octavio to hand over the demolition switch peacefully.
- When Bentley was distracting Octavio with a singing recital, he cut the chandelier he was standing under, which would have knocked him out and ended his plans had it not been for Carmelita destroying it with her shock pistol.
- Removed the Dark Mask of Earth from Carmelita, shrinking her back to normal size and freeing her from its corrupting influence.
- Despite understandably being against the Panda King joining his gang and not trusting him, Sly eventually comes to forgive him for the part he played in his parents' deaths.
- He shows utter disgust over Tsao's forceful marriage of the Panda King's daughter. He even proclaimed Tsao as the worst of all the villains he fought.
- Tricks Carmelita into dressing up as a bride in order to have General Tsao arrested for his crimes.
- He disguises himself as a pirate to gain Black Spot Pete's trust and to find where Dimitri's father's scuba gear is at.
- Alongside the Panda King, he defeated the Crusher, a giant squid the gang planned to use as an ally in rescuing Penelope and defeating LeFwee.
- He gets some more members on his team to go get into the Cooper Vault, so it won't fall into the hands of evil like Dr. M, who was a traitorous ally to his father.
- Tells Dr. M that he'd risk his life for Bentley like he did for him, then tried to reason with Dr. M on how he's not like his father, or any of his ancestors but his own person.
- Took a blast from Dr. M to save Carmelita.
Thieves in Time[]
- Defeated El Jefe and Toothpick.
- Reassured Murray's self-confidence after defeating Grizz.
- After Penelope's defeat, he comforts Bentley over her backstab of his relationship with her.
- He saved his existence and Cooper ancestry line from the envious Le Paradox who was using Time Travel as a way to take over the world.
- When Le Paradox was about to fall to his death and begged for Sly to save his life, Sly does so only to get backstabbed by him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He can be pretty mischievous, and not just with his thefts, as he essentially stoops to the level of the criminals he faces by taking wrongly from them, but also with the way he trolls Carmelita.
- While Sly follows his family's code of only stealing from other thieves and criminals, there are plenty of times when he breaks it. Examples of this include his stealing:
- The Queen of England's Crown Jewels.
- Stars from Hollywoodâs Walk of Fame.
- Wallets from people on the tropical beach of Haiti.
- Fruit from a local market in Hong Kong.
- Art from a museum.
- The World's Most Expensive Bavarian Chocolate.
- Fruit from a local market in Shanghai.
- His family's moral code, as Carmelita points out in The Adventures of Sly Cooper, is flawed, because since the criminals he steals from get their possessions by stealing from innocent people, he's stealing from them by proxy. For example, he and his gang stole the Venus de Whalo, which Madame D'Oinkeau gave to Dimitri as an engagement gift even after said engagement ended with the discovery of him being a forger and skipping town.
- He's an anti-hero, because despite his heroics, he's still fundamentally a criminal who regularly breaks his own code.
- In the "ACES Semifinals," he shot down 25 planes. Even though it was necessary to advance in the tournament, he enthusiastically proclaimed it was going to be great, knowing he was about to fly into a brutal blood sport and showed no remorse during or after the fact.
- In Thieves in Time, while his reason for leaving Carmelita was kinda justified given that his existence and family history were at risk, it was also because of his natural inherited drive to be a thief, making his departure somewhat selfish. This betrayal of her trust also causes Carmelita to be furious with him throughout much of the game.
