~ Shogo's last thoughts before his death in the film. |
Shogo Kawada is the tritagonist of the novel, manga, and film Battle Royale. He was the winner of the Battle Royale program a year before the story's events, and would have to relieve the nightmare of the program after he was kidnapped by the corrupt government of Japan alongside Class 9-B.
In the film, he was portrayed by Taro Yamamoto.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He saved many lives while he was the assistant of his father, who was a doctor.
- Even when he was a villain in the manga, all his actions were only done to protect Keiko, and even planned on killing himself so Keiko would win.
- During his first program, after his girlfriend Keiko was held hostage by Nakata, whom threatened to kill her if he didn't stop being her boyfriend.
- He decided to stop the program to redeem himself over his past actions and keep his promise to Keiko.
- He saved Shuya when he was about to get killed by Kyoichi.
- He decided to join Shuya and Noriko in their plan to save as many people during the program and give them hope that they would survive.
- While he was originally against it, he decided to try to scare Yumiko and Yukiko to make sure they wouldn't get killed, although it failed.
- During the program, he saved Shuya and Noriko multiple times from Kazuo and other students.
- He gave Sugimura supplies when they encountered each other while Sugimura was looking for Kayoko and Hirono.
- He protected Noriko during their first fight with Kazuo Kiriyama.
- He treated Noriko's wounds that she got from the fight with Kazuo.
- In the manga, he sympathized with Mitsuko Souma due to her being a victim of abuse, and admitting that she wasn't a monster like Kazuo.
- He deactivated Noriko and Shuya's collars, allowing them to leave the island and live their lives.
- In the manga, he stopped himself from killing Kamon's soldiers after Shuya convinced him not to.
- In his last moments, he told Noriko and Shuya how to use the boat so they could leave the island.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's an anti-hero, as despite having good goals, he does some extremely questionable actions in order to do it. For example, he was completely fine with leaving Yumiko and Yukiko to die so he could continue his plan, and only tried to save them when it was made clear Noriko and Shuya would try to save them and also endanger their lives in the process.
- He is extremely lethal, he sometimes kills people in brutal manners, such as when he shot Kyoichi's hand off to save Shuya and then shot him in the chest with his shotgun, or when he killed Kamon with a pencil in the manga. He also shows no sense of reluctance to kill people unlike Shuya, Noriko, and even Sugimura, as he felt no reluctance with killing people and even scolded Shuya for hesitating at killing Kazuo in the manga. Also, he revealed in the manga that he killed 15 people before the events of the story during his first program, and while he admits that he regrets most of his kills, he also says that he doesn't regret killing Nakata, although this is somewhat understandable as he thought he was going to rape Keiko.
- In the film, he threatened to kill Noriko and Shuya if they tried to come close to him even after it was made clear they were on his side.
- He possesses a vengeful side, as he wanted to get revenge on the program and in the manga, he even tried to kill one of Yonemi Kamon's soldiers after he shot Shuya before Noriko and Shuya stopped him.
- In the manga, he was revealed to have been a massive jerk before his first program, not caring about the feelings of others and didn't even care when a couple was kidnapped by the government and forced to leave their infant child behind. While he does tone down significantly his jerkish side, he still nonetheless still has it.
Trivia[]
