Inconsistently Admirable Wiki

I am the number one ranked Duelist in the country and the favorite to win the Duel Monsters Championship. You wouldn't last two minutes in a Duel against me.
~ Seto flaunting his Dueling skills to Joey.

Seto Kaiba or just commonly referred to as Kaiba, is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Joey Wheeler) in Yu-Gi-Oh! series and both of its adaptations (manga and Duel Monsters anime series). He has a younger brother named Mokuba, whom he shows compassion for, and is the CEO of Kaibacorp. He aims to become the world's greatest player of Duel Monsters. To accomplish this goal of becoming the strongest duelist, he must defeat his arch-rival, Yugi Muto.

He is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in the Japanese version and Eric Stuart in the English version.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

Anime/Manga[]

  • While he isn’t exactly close with Yugi, he at least respects him a lot as a duelist and shows honor towards him. He’s also been supportive of him at times and even complimented him.
  • He had a tragic past of being abused by his adopted father, Gozaburo, which resulted in him becoming crueler and colder growing up, and he only wanted what was best for him and his brother. He would even refuse to get adopted if it meant Mokuba couldn’t come with him. Hence, he is played for sympathy many times.
  • He genuinely loves and cares a lot about his younger brother Mokuba as he promised to always be there for him and protect him and even did everything he could to save him when he was imprisoned by Maximillion Pegasus, challenging him to a duel to win back his soul (with his soul being at stake too) and ends up hugging Mokuba when he sees him again afterwards.
  • Not only does he care about his younger brother Mokuba, but he has a soft spot for children in general, particularly orphans. That’s why he opened up a fun amusement park where all children can play and be happy.
  • Aids Mokuba, (Yami) Yugi, Mai, and even Joey to take down the Big Five.
  • He teamed up with Yugi and helped him defeat two Rare Hunters in a duel to get them out of the way so Yugi can locate his friends in time and save them. He also did this because Téa helped Mokuba escape from the Rare Hunters.
  • He saved Yugi and his friends multiple times, such as the time when he saved Téa's life from the Rare Hunters by throwing his Blue Eyes White Dragon card (despite how much he loves that card) to stop them.
  • He, Yugi, and Yugi's friends defeat Noah and the Big Five.
  • Kaiba gets rid of Gozaburo for good after defeating him in a duel.
  • After take over KaibaCorp, he turn it from military arm manufacturer to gaming industry instead. Which is why he destroy Alcatraz after the end of Battle City tournament.
  • Finally respects Joey after the latter lose to (Yami) Marik with honor and considers Joey a true duelist.
  • Has (Yami) Yugi go see the unconscious Joey before preparing to duel in the semi finals of Battle City Tournament.
  • He did not cheat during his duel with (Yami) Yugi in Battle City semi finals; even when losing.
  • He gave (Yami) Yugi Fiend's Santurary spell card to increase the chances to defeat (Yami) Marik.
  • Helps Yugi and his friends to defeat Dartz and the latter's group.
  • Kaiba invites Yugi, Rebecca, and even Joey to participate KC Grand Championship despite Kaiba himself won't participate as a contestant. Ironically, Kaiba duels Zigfried (one of the contestants he also invited) after finding out the latter tries to destory the Kaiba Corp and endangers many lives for a petty grudge on the former.
  • Foils Zigfried's plans to the point that he even have backup files in case the original files have been destoryed.
  • In anime version of Memory World arc, he helps Yugi and his friends defeat Yami Bakura and Zorc. And he's not too happy that Yami Bakura kidnapped Mokuba and Zorc kills innocent children.
  • In Dark Side Of Dimension Anime, he teaming up with Yugi to defeating Dark Diva. His temporary death is played for Sympathy as it also indirectly caused Yugi able to Summon Atem for one final time to defeat Dark Diva.
  • He became the founder of Duel Academy sometime before the GX series starts.
  • In GX series, he's fully confident that Chazz Princeton will defeat Slade, one of Chazz's older brothers, even if Chazz has a massive disadvantage of using monsters cards that has 500 or less original ATK.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Even after his defeated in Death-T (Manga) / early duelist kingdom (anime), while not as bad as before, he is still a smug who constantly keeps looking down on the others, mainly Yugi and Joey while kept bragging of how good his skills is. Also, he is displaying a sarcastic, rude personality, and a certain degree amount of sadism to the point when he crossed MEH such as building Death-T, a deadly theme park when he put literal Assassins all just to killed Yugi and his friends as a revenge and even willingly putting his own brother to Death-T and punishing him with a virtual penalty game after losing to Yugi as well as endangered Billions all just because he wanted to revived Atem since He hasn't beat him in a duel. He is also constantly picking on Joey for not being his level of a duelist and in the anime Exclusive, he gladly humiliating his rival Zigfried. While he regrets what happened to Mokuba, he still didn't sincerely apologize to Yugi and his friends as well as Zigfried (anime only). And he also didn't show remorse to any of it despite everything that he is done Which is too destructive for Near Pure Good.
  • he is mostly a hero by proxy, since most of his heroic acts are mainly for his own bennefit, out of obligation towards his brother, or as a reaction that inadvertently caused by his own selfishness, such as teaming up with Yugi against The Big Five or Dartz in the anime. While there are a few of his selfless moments such stood up against Zorc, all of his selfless moments are particularly happened in the anime exclusive while in the manga, he is mostly remained selfish.
  • He ripped Solomon’s rare and treasured Blue-Eyes White Dragon card and never apologized for it since.
    • His reason was that in a dueling deck, only three copies of one card are allowed. There were only four copies of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards in the world and he already had three of them in his possession, so he destroyed the fourth, to prevent it from being used against him.
    • And to make things even worst, in the manga when how he got those three Blue Eyes Cards in a much more detail, it was revealed that Kaiba put the previous owners of those cards into bankruptcy and one of them is commiting suicide as a results of his actions.
  • Despite for being honorable, He is proven to be a sore loser and Petty, such as threatening to commited Suicide if Yugi wins or when he blew up Alcatraz Island all because he didn't win in Battle City Tournament that he himself created. Even Anzu, calling him out for this trait.
  • He didn't care that his adoptive father Gozaburo committed suicide, although Gozaburo deserved it due to how abusive and evil he was. Plus, given his abusive nature towards Seto especially by overworking him, his uncaring nature towards his step-father's death was justifiable.
  • Even after the Battle City arc, he still harshly views Joey as a "third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck".
  • He causes some problems in GX series and technically 5DS series.
