Sentinel Prime is a important character in the Transformers original film series continuity. He is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Megatron) of the canonical prequel comics Foundation, and the main antagonist of Dark of the Moon, the third film in the franchise.
A direct descendent of Primus, he was the founder of the Golden Age of Cybertron and leader of the Autobots before Optimus Prime, as well as his mentor and Megatron's. Once a kind and egalitarian leader, he falls into villainy during the war and makes a deal with the Decepticons to rebuild Cybertron using Earth's resources.
He was voiced by the late Leonard Nimoy and by Nobuyuki Katsube in the Japanese dub.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- He is responsible for the emergence of the Autobot faction, which would later commit many admirable acts.
- While he did fall from grace in the third film, he did his most admirable acts in it's canon prequel tie-in comics prior to it.
- While the Admirable Standards are high, Sentinel stands out for him creating an artificial star to create Energon to save the planet from collapse and help mentoring Optimus Prime into the hero he is today.
Foundation[]
- When Cybertron was in a Dark Age, with constant wars, he maintained hope for a better future, looking for a way to bring peace.
- He welcomed both Optimus Prime and Megatron, teaching them about companionship, reason and, most importantly, that freedom is the right of all sentient beings.
- Although Megatron became lost in his ideals becoming a Decepticon, Optimus never stopped fighting for freedom. In short, it's thanks to Sentinel that Optimus is the wise and strong-willed leader he is today.
- Created a powerful star with the All Spark to finally bring light to the planet, creating a Sun for Cybertron, fueling the All Spark and bringing sources of Energon to the entire planet, saving the planet from collapse.
- Even Ironhide, who completely doubted Sentinel, was inspired by this action and accepted the Prime's ideals.
- He created the Council to propagate freedom to all Cybertronian people, leaving Optimus to lead the science division so the people would learn about the past, and leaving Megatron as the leader of the defense force to protect the planet.
- He was humble enough to admit that he was not capable of leading, and declared Optimus as leader because he knew he was more capable than him.
- When Optimus denies being leader, Sentinel disagrees but respects his student's decision.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He loses sight of his ideas during the Great War, preferring to have power over others than to propagate freedom. He also becomes a Fallen Hero by making a deal with Megatron to help the Decepticons rebuild Cybertron with Earth's resources, becoming a Pure Evil villain who caused the deaths of thousands of humans and several Autobots who were his allies and he betrayed.
- Despite teaching Optimus that freedom is everyone's right, he himself will betray these ideals after allying with Megatron and attacking Earth, with goals to enslave humanity to rebuild Cybertron.
- He loses any care he had for Optimus and Megatron after becoming corrupted, trying to kill the former and continually abusing the latter and plotting to usurp him as Decepticon leader. In the novelization, he tries to kill them both.
- Even before he became corrupted, he wasn't exactly pure of heart, as his main weapon was a Cosmic Rust Cannon (Acid Rust Gun in the novelization), a cruel weapon that is considered a war crime in Cybertron.
Trivia[]
- He is one of few Inconsistently Admirables characters to also be considered Pure Evil, alongside Light Yagami, Dr. James Sheridan, Prince Dios, King Edward V, Griffith and the Unicron Trilogy Megatron. Among them, he, along with Sheridan, is the only one that does not originate from a manga/anime and he, along with Megatron, are the only ones to originate from Transformers and he is the only one to originate from a live-action franchise too.
