Scott Pilgrim is the titular main protagonist of the Scott Pilgrim comics and film. He’s a 23-year-old Canadian who’s part of a band named Sex Bom-Omb and he’s dating a 17-year-old high schooler named Knives Chau.
After breaking up with Knives and dating the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, Scott learns that in order to be with her, he has to defeat her 7 Evil Exes.
In the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, he was portrayed by Michael Cera, who reprises his role in the anime adaptation Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He cares deeply about his friends and would do anything for them. He’s also supportive of his friends’ sexualities. He constantly refers to Wallace Wells as his “cool gay roommate”, was unbothered when he found out Ramona dated Roxie in college (though he was initially confused), and in the comics, expressed joy at seeing Stephen Stills with his new boyfriend.
- He genuinely loves Ramona, despite his initial obsessiveness over her.
- He goes out of his way to earn Ramona’s love by defeating her Evil Exes, showing not only his bravery, but also how committed he is to her.
- In the comics, this is further reinforced when Scott rejects Lisa Miller's romantic advances, stating he only has love for Ramona.
- After being confronted by his friends about his inappropriate relationship with Knives, he breaks up with her and tries to do so without hurting her feelings.
- After fighting Nega Scott, an evil personification of his most toxic traits, he finally accepts that he’s a flawed person who's made mistakes.
- In the film, he even befriended his evil self, as they hung out and planned on having brunch next time they met.
- When Gideon killed him during their battle, Scott spent his time in the afterlife reflecting on his life and decided to be a better person before using a 1-up he had to revive himself. When Ramona admitted her mistakes and apologized for treating him badly, Scott forgives her and they share a romantic moment together.
- Upon being revived, he realizes that he's been no better than Gideon, as they were both toxic, horrible people to their significant others. This enables him to unlock the Power of Understanding (Power of Love in the film), which Scott uses to defeat Gideon.
- This act is even more admirable in the comics since he also freed all of Gideon's exes, whom Gideon cryogenically froze against their will.
- In the comics, he had another genuine act of selflessness when he rescued his friend Kim Pine after she was kidnapped by the Katayanagi Twins.
- In the end, after defeating Ramona's Evil Exes (as well as his dark counterpart Nega Scott), he had a change of heart and decided to continue putting in the effort to be a better person.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
Both Versions[]
- He’s the definition of an anti-hero. He’s self-serving and most of his heroic acts are motivated entirely by selfishness, including defeating Ramona’s Evil Exes.
- He takes advantage of others’ kindness, such as using his parents’ and Wallace’s money because he refuses to get a job and never thanking them for it.
- He often tries to justify his bad and careless choices when others shame him for it, showing that he lacks accountability of his actions.
- When dating Knives, he was rude and abrasive toward her and only dated her to feel better about himself and get over his breakup with Envy.
- Despite shedding some of his flaws and growing as a person, he still maintains preventions (like being a womanizer) that keep him from qualifying as Near Pure Good.
Film Exclusive[]
- He never apologizes for his mistreatment of Knives, even after his self-reflection.
- Even though he apologized for it later on, he still cheated on Knives and Ramona at the same time.
- While both versions of Scott were rude to Knives, his film counterpart was moreso and resented hanging out with her so much that he casually jumps out of a window right in front of her just to avoid her.
- He quits Sex Bom-Omb out of spite when the band finally gets their big break, due to his conflict with Gideon.
Comics Exclusive[]
- When he thought that Ramona had broken up with him, Scott attempted to get "casual sex" from all of his exes, and even kissed Kim without her consent.
Trivia[]
- His anime counterpart was approved Near Pure Good due to being more heroic and noble, in addition to subverting most of his original counterpart's flaws.
