| “ | Such a beautiful friendship. A family born out of love and not genetics. Everything I want... I wish I'd never seen this. It was so much easier accepting the future when they were simply enemies. | „ |
| ~ Sage after witnessing Sonic and Tails befriending with each other. |
| “ | Please... look after... father. | „ |
| ~ Sage's parting words. |
Sage is a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise.
She was built as a program by none other than Eggman himself in order to protect him from threats and to help him out in his evil schemes.
She starts off as nothing more than a naïve AI who believes that Sonic's actions harm the environment rather than benefit it, but it is through the course of the game, with her keeping constant tabs on Sonic, that her whole mindset is put into question, and it is soon that she begins to envy Sonic and the friendships he has created, and seemingly yearns for a close bond with Eggman as well.
It is towards the end of the game, with her character arc seemingly complete (for now anyway), that she ultimately fulfills her purpose as Eggman's protector and sacrifices herself to save the universe from being consumed by the chaotic evil entity that is The End.
She is voiced Ryan Bartley in the English version of the game and Megumi Hayashibara in the Japanese version, both of whom voice Rei Ayanami.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Admirable?[]
- Despite being a program created by Dr. Eggman, she has a clear moral agency. Demonstrated by the fact she knows what bonds are.
- Despite her personal distaste for him at first, she ultimately warms up to Sonic by the end of the game.
- She cares deeply for Eggman, with her entire programmed goal being to protect him at all costs.
- Pulls Eggman into Cyber Space in order to protect him from the looming threat that is The End.
- Spends the duration of the game trying to find a way for him to escape Cyber Space.
- When The End shows their true colors, she is quick to tell Eggman that they need to evacuate back to Cyber Space for his own protection.
- Managed to convince Eggman to create an alliance with Sonic in order to save the universe from The End.
- She ultimately sacrifices herself to stop The End from destroying all of existence much to Eggman's sadness.
- In the Final Horizon DLC, she brings Sonic's friends back before having them collect the Chaos Emeralds so that they could come up with a more foolproof way of defeating The End.
- She protected Eggman from being killed by The End.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She's On & Off as her most heroic actions such as saving the universe from The End were done so that Eggman could rule the world afterward, stating in the Final Horizon DLC that the world was Eggman's to conquer.
- She was incredibly lethal when it came to trying to murder Sonic, with her awakening the ancient beings known as the Titans in order to have them brutally murder Sonic, and while she ended up befriending him in the end, she never shows explicit remorse for trying to murder him several times.
- Most of her dialogue in Sonic Racing has her insult her rivals, saying that Eggman will conquer the world.
Trivia[]
- Sage is one of four mainline Sonic characters to be Inconsistently Admirable, alongside Shadow the Hedgehog, Professor Gerald Robotnik and Tails Nine (as he is from a TV show).
- She and Shadow are the only Sonic IAs to be Magnificent Baddies.
- She, Gerald Robotnik, and Shadow are the only Sonic IAs to be in mainline Sonic games.
- She and Shadow are the only Sonic IAs to be Magnificent Baddies.
- Ironically, despite Maria Robotnik being a Pure Good, Eggman felt like Sage was as good of a person as Maria is, if not better, though it's understandable not only because Sage remains loyal to him, but also because Eggman never knew how good of a person Maria was.
