Chiaroscuro (better known as Roscuro) is one of the main characters of The Tale of Despereaux. He is a rat affiliated with Botticelli Remorso who aims to leave the dungeon and see light for the first time in years since the Kingdom had banned rats entirely.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He saved Despereaux from being eaten by the cat Botticelli had him fight in an incredibly one-sided match held for the sake of entertaining the other rats under the tyrant's rule by informing Despereaux what was going to happen and leading him away from the fighting ring.
  • He befriended Despereaux in his hideout, explaining his eagerness to return to the human world and see the light after having been banished from it for so long.
  • He redeemed himself upon seeing the concern in a captured Pea's eyes, refusing to ring the bell to signal the beginning of the feast. Seeing the rats charge at Pea anyway to eat her also left him in a state of horror.
  • He played a vital role in Botticelli's defeat by shining a light at the evil rat leader, causing him drop Despereaux and blinding Botticelli to the point of causing him to fall into the gladiator ring, where he was chased, imprisoned with, and eaten by the same cat he had previously tried to feed Despereaux to.
  • He apologized to Princess Pea after Botticelli and his cronies were defeated, who also apologized to him for her harshness earlier.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He played a part in the death of Queen Rosemary by falling from the ceiling and landing into her bowl of soup. However, him falling into the bowl of soup was only an accident so this is a minor prevention.
  • After his apology was rejected by Princess Pea, he temporarily became an antagonist responsible for manipulating Mig into bringing Pea to the dungeon (which led to Pea's capture). This wasn't a completely heinous act, however, as all he wanted was her kindness and friendship, and her turning him away earlier left him genuinely hurt (not to mention Botticelli had been manipulating him the whole time).
