Rob, briefly known as Dr. Wrecker, is the main antagonist of the Cartoon Network animated sitcom The Amazing World of Gumball.
He first appeared in the show as a purposeless background character at Elmore Junior High. However, due to the futility of his existence, he was eventually exiled into the Void, a dimension that erases mistakes and anomalies from reality. When he escaped precariously, his body was deconstructed and disfigured into a glitching, polygonal form. Upon escaping, he found a new purpose by becoming Gumball Watterson's mortal enemy, seeking revenge for his abandonment and a justification for his existence.
He was voiced by Charles Philipp. As Dr. Wrecker, he was voiced by the late David Warner. In his Superintendent Evil disguise, he was portrayed by Garrick Hagon.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- In "The Rerun," after Gumball tried to rescue him from the Void, Rob rewound all of the damage he did to Gumball in the episode. This revived Darwin, Anais, Penny, and de-infantilized Richard and Nicole. He also revived the Van Shopkeeper in the process. Afterwards, he destroyed the Universal Remote, claiming that it was too dangerous to exist. He did this in spite of the fact that the remote wielded him all of the power in the universe and also forwent his opportunity to restructure the universe.
- Using Banana Barbara's paintings, Rob became aware that Elmore was going to be consumed entirely by the Void. In an effort to save the life of everyone in the series, he transformed them into humans, claiming it would allow them to escape into "the other place" before the collapse of their reality.
- He was also fairly brave and persistent in this goal as he was significantly antagonized in the process, being erased from existence in "The Future" and knocked out in "The Inquisition."
- Because he went the extra mile to save everyone apart from only himself, the failure of his plan led to his own descent into the Void, making it selfless in nature rather than purely self-serving considering the circumstances.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is primarily portrayed as a villain in the series and is incredibly On & Off, attempting to eliminate Gumball's family on multiple occasions, setting up lethal scenarios like a town-wide flood in Elmore and a bomb on a packed school bus, and generally causing chaos. He didn’t show significant remorse for most of his crimes in the series.
- Although he had good intentions, his methods of saving everyone from the Void utilized questionable or downright unethical means, such as kidnapping and abusing Banana Barbara, trying to kill Gumball, Darwin and Banana Joe upon their rescue attempt, engaging in reckless endangerment, and forcibly transforming everyone into humans.
- It's likely that didn’t need to do any of this, as he could have simply told everyone about the Void from the start and asked for help. However, it's also possible that he acted out of desperation or the idea that they wouldn't have believed him anyway.
- Outside of his major crimes, he can also be an arrogant and egotistical jerk. Not only does he exhibit a lot of entitlement regarding his need to be remembered and also above others, but he also blamed Gumball for turning him into a villain and lashed out on Banana Barbara or the students when they misunderstood his intentions or didn't help him with his plans.
- This went against him, as after being unmasked, he wasted time calling the students fools instead of explaining his motivation right away.
