Richard "Rick" Daniel Sanchez, also known as Rick C-137 to identify him from other Ricks, is the titular main protagonist of adult animated series Rick and Morty.
He is the elderly alcoholic scientist with extreme high intelligence, capable of creating everything and is considered to be one of the smartest beings in the entire multiverse. He constantly drags his adoptive family, mainly his adoptive grandson Morty Smith into crazy adventures, and despite his anti-heroic and even villainous traits, he genuinely cares for his family and always willing to protect them, as his original one was killed by Morty's grandfather, Rick Prime.

What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Despite most of time Rick does heroic for pragmatism, this does not stop him from being a pretty admirable character, and even some of his worst acts could have positive effect or have understandable motives.
- Despite having jerkish attitude and abusive control towards them, Rick does cares for his family genuinely, as his behavior is result of repressing trauma from his original one's death.
Background[]
- He was willing to abandon science for good for the sake of his family. When Rick Prime spitefully murdered his wife and daughter, Rick spend many years in the multiverse to find and avenge his loved ones.
- Despite being mostly interested in finding Rick Prime, Rick does establish a friendship with Birdperson and Squanchy, helping them in their war against the Intergalactic. He also went to Squanchy's stand-up comedy show, despite it being poor.
- Despite laying low on Prime's dimension to kill him, Rick genuinely cared for Prime's grandson Morty and didn't blame him for his grandfather's crimes.
Season 1[]
- He gave genuine heart-to-heart talk to Scary Terry, inspiring him to finally stand up to his abusive teacher.
- Went into Snuffles' dreams, where he influenced the dog into abandoning his conquest of overthrowing humanity and go to another planet.
- He genuinely comforted Jerry Prime, after the latter's best day ever turned out to be a scam by Zigerions.
- While originally wanting Morty Prime to give up on his bet with him, not only Rick changed his attitude towards Morty's adventure, but after learning that Morty have suffered a rape attempted by King Jellybean, Rick out of pity let Morty win and gave his card winnings to poor villagers to cheer Morty up, before killing Jellybean in revenge for his crimes.
- Gave Morty a love potion and later tried to undo its ripple effects, even if it all ended in horrible mutation of all of humanity.
- Opened a curse-purging shop, running devil Lucius Needful out of business, even if he did it solely to spite Summer. When Summer got betrayed by Mr. Needful, Rick helped her beat him up in revenge.
- Tracked down Evil Rick and Evil Morty, in the process clearing his name before the Council of Ricks and saving many Mortys, that they have captured and put under endless torture.
- Threw a huge party for his grandchildren.
Season 2[]
- While fixing the time streaming, Rick gave Morty his time collar, after the latter lost his. While Rick was able to return as well, he sacrificed himself for Morty before he found the broken collar.
- Discovered threat of Memory Parasites and ultimately managed to kill them all, saving Earth from being conquered by them.
- He, Morty and President Curtis saved Earth from annihilation by winning Cromulons' music talent show.
- Sent Beth and Jerry on a couple therapy to work out their issues.
- Helped Morty and Summer murder a vampire in their school.
- Like the rest of family, Rick was genuinely horrified when Jerry, the person he heavily dislikes, got murdered.
- Helped Arthricia murder all of rich class on her planet, that are responsible for creating a Purge festival, where people kill each other for sport, ending that event. Later on, Rick told Morty that his murderous rampage was result of eating chocolate bars with rage-amplifying chemical, to put Morty at ease.
- While it's left unclear if Rick knew that bars didn't had chemical, but even if he did, he still lied for his grandson's well-being.
- Went to Birdperson's wedding, despite originally not wanting to (even if him not coming to wedding would be better, as it was later revealed that Tammy, Birdperson's wife, was Intergalactic Federation agent).
- Surrendered himself before Federation for his family, even if he did this in part of his plan to spite Jerry.
Season 3[]
- Successfully destroyed infamous tyrannical Intergalactic Federation, while also killing the Council of Ricks, who were rather more horrible than him, as well as saving his grandchildren.
- Caused a divorce between Beth and Jerry to free them from the manipulation of the Citadel of Ricks, who manipulated them to be together so that Morty and Summer could exist in that universe.
- His adventure with his grandchildren in post-apocalyptic world resulted in them overcoming their issues with Beth's and Jerry's divorce.
- Killed Doominatron, Worldender and most of Vindicators, all of whom were horrible planet-destroying supervillains (even if the latter two was for selfish reasons).
- Took Jerry with him on a "pity adventure", boosting Jerry's self-esteem in process and thus helping him get rid of his cowardly tendencies.
- Took Morty on a spa, after seeing how traumatized he have become.
- Stopped his Toxic half from toxifying the world.
- While some of memories he erased not to be seen as foolish, Rick mostly erases Morty's memories, if they have traumatizing moments.
- Created a world called Froopyland for Beth in her childhood, to keep her from murdering the neighbors. He and Beth later on made clone of Beth's childhood friend Tommy, after Beth was forced to kill him, saving Tommy's father from wrongful execution.
- Rick was horrified after learning what Tommy did to survive in Froopyland and stopped Tommy when he tried to eat a Froopyland child, showing he has standards against cannibalism and violence against infants.
- Tried to give Morty a selfie with President Curtis.
Season 4[]
- He, his holographic self and Wasp Rick saved Morty from his mad quest to die with Jessica. In process, he promised to share responsibility of their adventures.
- He felt huge amount of remorse, when his attempts to get rid of Tony resulted in his death, paid his respect on his funeral and gave Tony's father technology to clone him.
- He, Morty and Summer saved many dragons from abusive wizard.
- After being genuinely horrified with Talking Cat's background, Rick tried to stop Jerry from watching it, and once he saw what it was, Rick erased Jerry's memories of it for no other reason than genuine concern for his mental well-being.
- He tried to convince Morty that he shouldn't interfere in actions of Space Snakes, with his warnings turned out to be true, when Morty by sending a masquerade snake caused a Terminator-style war in the future.
- While Rick built a government for Golem Children under Beth's pressure, he genuinely tried to save them from their real father Reggie, who tried to outright murder them, even openly saying that he's willing to protect the city, as it is important to Beth.
Season 5[]
- Saved Birddaughter from the Galactic Federation Prison after initially wanting to leave her there.
- Showed genuine standards towards Evil Morty's slides of Ricks committing atrocities across the Central Finite Curve.
- Saved several Morty's from the destruction of the Citadel, caused by Evil Morty.
Season 6[]
- Prevented Jerry's fortune which said he will have sex with his mother.
- Stopped Jennith Padrow-Chunt from misusing the Fortune Cookies.
- After seeing Jerry being upset after he insulted and slapped him, Rick apologized to him for his troubles.
- After Pissmaster committed suicide from the humiliation of losing to Jerry in a fist fight, Rick assumed his identity and became a hero to give him a noble death for his daughter.
- Saved Morty from getting enrolled in the Knights of the Sun.
Season 7[]
- He tried to help Mr. Poopybutthole recover from his family leaving him.
- He stopped Rick Prime from killing every version of his family.
- He tried to make the other Ricks see reason that Rick Prime is lying through his teeth and they are never getting their Diane back.
- He defeated the Pope.
- After Morty left the Fear Hole, Rick decided not to go into the Fear Hole after trusting Morty, and posted his photo to celebrate his success of conquering his fears.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's an anti-hero, with most of his heroic acts being done out of pragmatism.
- He is extremely jerkish nearly to everyone, and even outright psychological abusive towards his own family. At one point he even left them to die without remorse. Although, he mellows out in the later seasons and starts to treat his loved ones with more respect.
- He was complicit in the destruction of 2 artificial universes full of life, just so that he can extort Zeep into providing energy for him.
- He's on & off character, who has done many horrific things, like slaughtering thousands of alternate Ricks in his quest for vengeance, assisting in the creation of the Central Finite Curve, causing countless planets to be destroyed in his scheme to get rid of Morty's film-writing enthusiasm, feeding his family dead people as spaghetti, then indirectly causing the entire planet to be scavenged for food, among many, MANY more atrocities.
