| “ | You know. You know best. God tells you. If I listen to you, it's good, and right, and I can help, and I can save people, and make it right, and everything will be okay. If I judge as your judge, the judgment is God's Word. I see now. I am so sorry. Please give me a mask - I am afraid. No one can know me. Please let me be reborn like the world, cleansed of sin and new, and I will fight to cleanse the sin. Thank you, Joseph. Thank you, Father. | „ |
| ~ A note in Dutch's bunker, possibly written by the Deputy. |
The Sheriff Deputy, also known as the Junior Deputy, or simply Deputy, is the main protagonist the 2018 Ubisoft game Far Cry 5, and a supporting character in its alternate-timeline sequel: Far Cry: New Dawn.
They are a sheriff's deputy who came to Hope County to arrest the radical preacher Joseph Seed. In the future, they became close to Joseph Seed in the New Eden cult.
In Far Cry 5, their appearance and gender are player-determinant and chosen at the start of the game's story.
Their Good Ranking[]
What Makes Them Admirable?[]
- They and their colleagues arrived in Hope County to arrest Joseph Seed and stop his criminal activities.
- After their colleagues were captured by Joseph's sect, they set about liberating Hope County from the sect.
- They liberated the entire Dutch Island from sectarians.
- They helped the residents of Hope County in various ways, such as restoring cellular communications by destroying towers, rescuing hostages, etc.
- In the Holland Valley region, where John Seed ruled, they liberated the town of Falls End and met new allies such as Jerome Jeffries and Mary Mae Fairgrave.
- They became very good friends with Nick Rye and his pregnant wife, Kim, as they helped them multiple times in the fight against sectarians.
- When Kim went into labor, they drove her and Nick to the hospital, becoming the godparent to their newborn daughter, Carmina.
- They killed John Seed, saved Joey Hudson from agonizing torture, and freed the entire Holland Valley from sectarians.
- They killed Faith Seed and liberated the Henbane River region from her sectarians.
- They killed Jacob Seed, saved their colleague Pratt from his influence, and freed the Whitetail Mountain region from sectarians.
- After all the messengers were killed and the regions were nearly completely liberated from the sect, they decided to finally confront Joseph Seed. However, they discovered that all their allies had been captured by him. At this point, they faced a difficult decision, depending on the player's choice:
- In the "Resist" ending, they refused to submit to Joseph Seed, brought their allies back to their senses, and together they defeated and arrested Joseph. However, the apocalypse began, resulting in the deaths of everyone except the Protagonist and Joseph, who took refuge in a bunker.
- In the "Leave" ending, they agreed to submit to Joseph Seed, who then forgave them, released their colleagues, and left Hope County with them.
- Eventually becoming loyal to Joseph, the Protagonist always sought to fight sin and deliver justice, donning a mask that they would never remove. Becoming a new person, they left their old life behind and proclaimed themselves the Judge.
- They began helping the Captain in the fight against the dangerous criminal group Raiders, even accepting the Captain into Joseph's sect.
What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]
- Although they commit many heroic deeds and have a clear disdain for Joseph and his cult, they still lack significant characterization due to being mute and never talking or expressing emotion throughout the story, instead serving as a vessel for the player.
- They can be very wrathful and lethal, mercilessly gunning down cult members.
- In Far Cry New Dawn, they began committing extrajudicial killings under the leadership of Joseph Seed. While it could be argued they were brainwashed by Seed into becoming his pawn, there's nothing that suggests the Deputy suffers from moral agency issues, especially considering they seem to enjoy killing their victims.
