Neito Monoma also known by his hero name Phantom Thief is a supporting character in the Manga/Anime series My Hero Academia.
He serves as the anti-heroic main antagonist of the Joint Training Arc.
He serves as an tactical student and a secondary protagonist in Class 1-B who is characterized as a false antagonist with a obsession for class superiority and often shows pure arrogance non-stop. At the same time, he is the brunt of the excessive rivalry towards Class 1-A and is very dedicated with toppling Class 1-A and making his own class come off as superior and better than them at any opportunity, which has him often insulting them before being knocked out by one of his classmates such as Kendo.
He is voiced by Kohei Amasaki in the Japanese version and by Austin Tindle in the English dub.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He genuinely cares for his Class 1-B classmates and truly wants to be a hero. Especially for the fact he seeks to become a hero so he could become the "main character" in his story for becoming a hero at the academy ever since he was a child despite being underestimated for his Quirk being deemed "impossible to use" or not as versatile as other Quirks.
- He tries to help with understanding Eri's quirk more, apologizing when it's a "blank".
- During the Paranormal Liberation War, he joins Vlad King in taking down a different hideout area.
- He is watching over Eri when the civilian mob are refusing to let Deku in.
- He goes to the central hospital to copy Kurogiri's quirk and tries to master it in just a few days to play his role in the Final War.
- He summons all the Pro Heroes into the battlefield to fight the Villains in the Final War. Since he's not even a blip on All For One's radar, Aizawa has Monoma copy Kurogiri's Warp Gate, thus allowing the Pro Heroes to completely blindside All For One by using it to let the heroes ambush him in mass, turning his own plan on it's head to use against him and succeed at besting him.
- He opens up more portals behind the villains, allowing the Pro-Heroes to split them up.
- He teleports himself back to the U.A Fortress to continue the nest phase of the plan.
- He copies Erasure and positions himself to have eyes on Shigaraki at all times in the Paranormal Liberation War, preventing him from using his quirks. This would be a great factor to the heroes as it prevented Shigaraki from using Decay or any other quirks.
- Him aiding Eraserhead during his eye injury and using the Erasure Quirk to erase Tomura Shigaraki, was also a very helpful act because Mirko and the big 3 would’ve been dead a long time ago if he didn’t use this Quirk.
- He is genuinely impacted by Katsuki's near death and cries out in disbelief, showing that he was sympathetic and did care for him despite all of the jerkish behavior.
- He tries to keep his sight on Shigaraki all throughout the war, even despite the ongoing battle and the harsh weather, only stopping once a swarm of Twice Doubles surprise him from behind.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has an unhealthy obsession with getting Class 1-A to look bad and he's willing to use any small opportunity to mock, belittle or even manipulate others to get his way.
- His obsession for class superiority allows him to believe that he looks cool by the idea of him holding superiority over Class 1-A and takes way too much pride in the rivalry he started because of how envious and spiteful he is with Class 1-A, this doesn't excuse how he's also overly proud and shameless about how he openly looks down on them with an arrogant smirk on his face, and him always getting competitive with Class 1-A all the time is to fulfill him and his class's pride to be popular and even more so than Class 1-A (ex. Challenging Deku and the class about the Licensing Exam with a 50% chance rate to rub it in their faces)
- He is also way too cocky, condescending, pretentious and generally an abrasive smart-aleck who likes to show off to a fault. He genuinely believes he and his class are actually better than Class 1-A in every way imaginable, thus rendering his behaviors out to be extremely supercilious, stuck-up and boastful.
- An example of this is when he said how his class had a 50% pass rate and emphasizing their chances of Class 1-A failing, which made him give off a sadistic looking gleeful smile while it cuts to a blue illusion background change and it cuts to Midoriya telling himself how he always forgets how much Neito hates Class 1-A with a burning passion behind his supposedly "calm" exterior.
- Following this, he can also show some signs of classism towards Class 1-A themselves since he enjoys mocking and baiting them over the slightest little failure/mistake they've ever made and goes into several manic rants over their flaws to insert his superiority-inferiority complex over them, even if the reasons are so unimportant to even bring up. It must be mentioned how he shows to be very proud of the fact he always discriminates an entire class of superheroes, in favor of his own class of superheroes being popular and to be better than them, making him show some signs of elitism due to how snobbish he is with them.
- This can also make him way too conceited about how "charismatic" he sees himself, especially since he likes being in the spotlight an awful lot of the time and always revels in showboating his own success and skills onto everyone in the academy in a very bombastic and self-aggrandizing fashion, and will act unreasonably irritable if anyone had "ruined his vibe", and will act similarly towards Class 1-A if they ever get any of the attention despite that class being a group of equals.
- He can be rude with his 1-B classmates sometimes and he tends to be an overall jerk since he constantly bullies, baits and rips on Class 1-A for little to no good reason other than his obsessing envy and spite towards them being popular superheroes of the academy, and he also revels in humiliating them and getting the attention in disrespecting his rivals daily for the enjoyment factor, thus making him rather petty-minded (ex. Bullying Midoriya for his talents by elbowing him on the head while saying Midoriya's head was too "big" to miss, calling Katsuki "an idiot" for figuring out his Quirk, calling Katsuki and his class "small-minded" after he took a wrap off of Katsuki's head to taunt him and humiliate him while taking Katsuki's teams points, and also jeering at Eri by calling her a "foolish child" for thinking he was a bad guy).
- He also even went far to the extent of throwing stones at the class to get rises out of them, making Monoma out to be incredibly reckless and an overall nuisance who just annoys everyone all around him with his unprovoked antagonism towards the class with his psychotic antics (even when it shows that Class 1-B themselves can be annoyed by this also!) and it results in Monoma gaining bad publicity because of how he targets them on a daily basis.
- He mocked Izuku about his encounter with the Hero Killer and asks him what villains he could bring down on them next, all with a scornful and deranged attitude that makes him come across as far too snarky and obnoxious towards the Pro-Heroes.
- Additionally, this quality can also make him way too mischievous to the point of being incredibly petty and childish since he always instigates conflicts towards Class 1-A at any time and any moment, often seen teasing them non-stop often just to troll them, humiliate them and embarrass them for his own amusement and enjoyment with a smug grin/smile on his face and a cackling laugh to unnerve them when he is preparing for an exam, talking to Class 1-B and even when he is taunting Class 1-A for just being near Class 1-B (even if it meant poking fun at any of the classmates in Class 1-A over nothing specific).
- He provoked Izuku in the Joint Training, all by taunting Katsuki with a pompous attitude because of his involvement in All Might's end.
- During the Cavalry Battle, he taunts and provokes Katsuki constantly throughout the Sports Festival, all without a good reason to do so. Which made Katsuki to go after him and his team first in fury and full force.
- During the Shie Hassaikai Arc, he tricked Pony Tsunotori into trash-talking to Eijiro Kirishima and Denki Kaminari of Class 1-A without her meaning to, deliberately humiliating herself and the two students those just for Monoma's personal amusement and throwing a fit of cackling laughter (right before Kendo scolds him again and karate chops his neck again).
- He also had several moments of severe incompetence, recklessness and hypocrisy as a hero-in-training because of his arrogance and egotism. Even though he can be pretty smart and strategic when he wants or needs to be, and despite thinking Class 1-A are full of flaws, yet he performs rather poorly in actual tests, has failed the summer exams and almost failed the fall exams that relates to Quirk studies.
- When Class 1-A were praised for surviving a villain attack, Monoma exclaims that Class 1-B could handle this event with no problem without the class being prepared for the challenge, but most members in Class 1-B end up in a coma while both classes were then ambushed and put in a forest in the Cue the Forest Training Camp Arc, Monoma's actions made his own class look inferior as a result. And despite this, Monoma still ended up not being part of the fight he started due to intentionally taking remedial classes, thus making him a coward who weaseled his way out of the trouble he (and his teacher) both had caused.
- Even though he made fun of Kirishima, Kaminari, Sero, Sato, and Ashido for failing the final exams, he was the only one in Class 1-B to fail the exams (as revealed by Kirishima) and hides the fact that he is a massive hypocrite by acting snooty and self-righteous towards them by saying he and his class passed and pulling ahead of them, thus making him surprisingly incompetent and a nutjob with a needless grudge over Class 1-A.
- It doesn't help that Monoma has also brought a lot of karma on himself in several episodes for his animosity and pettiness towards Class 1-A like getting Kendo to repeatedly chop him in the neck to knock him out unconscious or Shota Aizawa strangling him with his capturing weapon for baiting Class 1-A.
- In the episode "School Festival Start!!" during the U.A. School Festival Arc, he encouraged and forced Itsuka Kendo to participate in a beauty contest to challenge and take on Class 1-A, which ends up humiliating himself at the end for how it was all now left to votes and humiliating 1-A didn't work as Monoma intended.
- While battling All For One, he insults an AFO-possessed Shigaraki in his face, which resulted him suffering from painful repercussions.
- He also admits that he wants to be "manipulative" since he believes he is not powerful on his own as an excuse for not being able to do things like a typical hero and must instead resort to being dishonest and come up with many underhanded tactics and needing to lie and deceive several people as a habit of doing unheroic behavior for his own personal gain as a student, thus making him anti-heroic.
- When he engineers a hot pot competition between classes 1-A and 1-B to prove his class' superiority in the light novels, provoking Bakugo by insulting the food and successfully convinced Iida to make 1-A carry out a dare for losing by using it as a metaphor for heroes and villains.
