Yagami Light. L. Kira. You lose.
~ Near when Light is exposed
No. You're just a murderer, Light Yagami. And this notebook is the deadliest weapon of mass murder in the history of mankind. You yielded to the power of the Shinigami and the notebook, and have confused yourself with a god. In the end, you're nothing more than a crazy serial killer. That's all you are. Nothing more and nothing less.
~ Near to Light Yagami.

Nate River, better known as Near, is the main antagonist of the second half of the Death Note anime/manga series. He is the leader of the Special Provision for Kira with the goal of capturing Kira. He appears alongside Mello in the second part of the Death Note series after the death of L Lawliet. Near and the Special Provision for Kira initially acts as an ally to helping both the Japanese Task Force and Light Yagami capture Kira. However, at the same time, Near suspects that Light Yagami is Kira and plans to expose him as Kira with the help of Mello.

His Goodness Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Unlike Light, Mello, or even L himself, he doesn't seem to be very egocentric, or at least doesn't allow it to interefere in his actions. He wanted to work alongside Mello from the very start, and humbly praises Mello's essencial actions when exposing Light Yagami, pointing out how neither of them on their own would've won against Light, but rather, together, were able to be on L's level.
  • Despite having a pragmatic motive to investigate cases for his personal interest, Near does have moral standards and sense of justice, as is shown when he showed disgust to Light's ideal and rebuted his speech.
  • He created SPK and conducted his own investigation of the Kira case, risking his own life to solve it.
  • He and the Special Provision for Kira help the Japanese Task Force track down Mello and the Mafia during Soichiro Yagami's trade with the Death Note and Sayu Yagami with the Mafia.
  • He became upset when the SPK members were killed by Mello.
  • Had Halle Lidner act as a bodyguard for Kiyomi Takada.
  • He actually cared about Mello and had no problem with working with him since the beginning, only not doing it while Mello refused. Eventually, they teamed up and, thanks to this, were able to expose Light Yagami as Kira.
  • Immediately ordered to have Teru Mikami be arrested after Teru Mikami attempted to kill him, the Special Provision for Kira members, and the Japanese Task Force members.
  • He gave credit to Mello for playing the most pivotal part in helping him expose Light Yagami as Kira.
  • He told Light Yagami how delusional he has become and that no person that was truly decent would use the Death Note.
    • In fact, his assessment is well-founded considering that Soichiro hesitated to use the Death Note to kill Mello because of his strict moral code of no killing.
  • He alongside Aizawa work on a six month case involving illegal drug use.
  • Despite everything he did, Near had some respect towards Light, refusing to call the new Death Note user who was killing elderly people Kira because it would be an act of disrespect towards him and L, saying that for all his wrongs and while admitting that he didn't do what he did for justice, Light at least stopped wars and lowered crime rate by 70%.
  • It's implied that the reason why he didn't go on a case to take down C-Kira is because he wanted to bruise C-Kira's ego by calling the person an abominable monster, thus resulting in C-Kira killing himself, stopping his killings.
  • He pays tribute to his rival, Mello by eating a chocolate bar, which was Mello's personal favorite snack.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Just like L, he is an anti-hero, since he mainly takes investigating cases for his own personal interest and serving L posthumously rather than to pursue justice.
  • Like L Lawliet, he is prone to using morally questionable methods to solve the Kira case such as letting Mello test the 13 day rule and potentially putting themselves in danger with a meetup with two Kiras (Light and Teru Mikami).
    • He tells the task force falsely that Mogi is dead when in reality, he is holding him captive.
    • He is fine allowing X-Kira to continue killing instead of apprehending him and seizing the notebook so he could conclusively prove that Light was Kira.

Trivia[]

  • The manga's creators described Near as a "cheater" and "the more evil" between himself and Mello, further emphasizing his status.
  • According to Matsuda's theory that is highly debatable within the fanbase, Near used the Death Note to control Mikami to gain the upper hand on Light, of which kills Mikami ten days after Light is exposed as Kira. If Matsuda's theory is valid, then it would mean Near is more morally ambiguous, as he stated that no decent person would ever use the Death Note, thus concluding that he is no decent person, and even though the Matsuda theory is absent in the anime, it is still plausible that he may have still used it in a violent way in killing him, assuring that his corrupting factors are stronger, due to being violently lethal. A major reason why this implication could be true is the likely scenario case that even with Mello's help and Light's arrogance, the odds would have still been in Light's favor, with Mikami having official confirmation on having one of the best human statistics in the series, and the extremely difficult procedure in getting Mikami's Death Note, that even with the theory people don't accept as a point for Near's victory.
  • Out of all the Death Note characters on the Inconsistently Admirable Wiki, he is the only one to still be alive at the end of the series official continuity.
