That is all. |
“ | For a long time, humans have been taught that if you try hard enough, you can accomplish anything. Even if we weren’t told directly, you’d know just by looking at the world around us. The internet, TV, and newspapers are overflowing with hopeful messages that say exactly that. But people who can’t win...people who don’t try to win...people who try their best and still can’t win...they are all worthless trash. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who are born with worth, and everybody else. No matter how hard a lowly human tries, they will never be the same as someone who was born worthy. They say that “effort breeds success”... but that’s a complete lie. The world is not that accommodating. No matter how hard a small dog tries, it will never become a large dog. No matter how hard a penguin tries, there’s no way it will ever soar through the sky...which means…unworthy humans will never become worthy, no matter what they do. People with talents don't become talented...they’re just born with their abilities right from the start. That’s right...just like you guys. That’s why I have so much respect for you all. Ah, just so you know, what I feel is different from admiration. Admiration is...wishing you could be like the object of your admiration. But what I feel is not so self-serving. How should I put it? What I feel is...more pure...more like a selfless love that wants nothing in return… so...I want you guys to believe me when I say… I don't mind if you kill me, but if that happens, I want you to let me help. I don’t care if the killer survives, or if everyone but the killer survives. I just...want both sides to do their very best. I want to see with my own two eyes...the absolute hope that lies ahead. Yep, I’m really lucky! Someone as insignificant as me will be there when hope and despair collide, and unleash their energy. So please...let me help you...if your planning to kill me, I would be honored to help you carry out your plan. I want you to use me as a stepping stone so everyone can shine. I want you to kill me in a way that befits- | „ |
~ Nagito's speech. |
“ | This little incident will just be a stepping stone for you all! In the end, hope always wins! That's what I believe! | „ |
~ Nagito Komaeda. |
Nagito Komaeda (also known as Ultimate Lucky Student, and The Servant) is one of the main protagonists in the Danganronpa franchise.
An extremely intelligent yet mentally disturbed young adult, Nagito was blessed and/or cursed at birth with supernatural and superhuman luck. This has resulted in his life being a constant series of both positive and negative incredibly unlikely circumstances happening to him (such as when his airplane was struck by a meteor, only to find out after he was rescued that during the crash he had won the lottery.) The stress of this life has warped his worldview to where he believes that for the "chosen" (aka Hope's Peak's Ultimate's), all of life's despair, no matter how tragic, are ultimately good things because they are just "stepping stones" to a happy, hopeful ending.
He is voiced by Megumi Ogata in the Japanese version of the anime and the game, and by Bryce Papenbrook in the English version of the anime and the game.

- He and the rest of the class are shocked by the Imposter's true identity, but come to accept it quickly.
- He, alongside his classmates, cries at Chiaki's death before being brainwashed by Junko.
- Although he did do bad things in the past, that was only because he was brainwashed and that he wasn’t himself anymore, so it's never completely their fault since they were under the control by someone else.
- He saves Monaca from being killed in his brainwashed state, even after everything she did.
- When Hajime was laying on the ground, he walked up to him to help him and was the only person who stayed with Hajime when he passed out on a beach after arriving on the island.
- While he was being rude and acting weird to his classmates which caused his classmates to stay away from him, that was because he has two illnesses. he tells Hajime that he has Stage 3 malignant lymphoma (Cancer) and Frontotemporal dementia which can cause several problems with his brain and one of them can be psychotic obsession towards certain things and being attached to them pretty strongly so it is not his fault that he’s like this it's the disease that making him like that.

- When Kazuichi and Nekumaru knocked him out and tied him up until a murder happened, he never showed any anger, vengeance or hatred at them and thanked them for being gentle with him and don't do any harm to him beyond just tying him to be sure that he wont do anything that they don't want to.
- Despite lacking emotions, he does feel empathy for the killer just like what happened to Teruteru.
- His only reason to keep distance away from his classmates was to only protect them from his luck that will cause disasters.
- When Peko gets executed alongside Fuyuhiko, he is angry and upset.
- When realized that Fuyuhiko was still alive, he was glad and satisfied when he was alive.
- He lied to Hajime about Ibuki who’s gonna kill him and doesn't stop lying to his classmates in the third chapter and while that is a prevention, that is only because he had the Despair Disease and he doesn't have control over it just like Ibuki, Akane, and Mikan, who also had the disease. This could also possibly hint that Nagito is not a liar, that he is an honest guy and only lies if necessary.
- When the Ultimate Imposter saved Nagito from grabbing the knife and got killed by Teruteru ,he was genuinely impressed and said he even began to have a small will to live after the Imposter's actions.
- In the trial, while he did pin Hajime for being suspicious by being the only one who saw the body, this was necessary since he was only trying to prove Hajime's innocence by telling them that he can’t go to the theater and imitate the murder.
- When Hajime gets cornered about pinning the blame on Mikan, he was one of the people who did not suspect Hajime or overlook the killer alongside Chiaki and Fuyuhiko.
- When Mikan asked Nagito’s forgiveness, he refused to forgive and empathize with her because she was only doing this for despair despite being caught with the Despair Disease.
- When Mikan said that Nagito doesn't understand because he doesn't have anyone to love and isn't accepted by anyone, he was stunned, hurt and at a loss for words.
- When Hajime wanted everyone to starve and give up rather than let another killing happen, he was shocked by his words on giving up on living.
- Despite being neglected by everyone, still loves and cares for his classmates on the inside.
- When everyone was trapped in the funhouse and was left to starve to death, he offered himself to be eaten to help everyone escape in his free-time.
- Was flattered when Sonia drew a picture of him for his door while they were in the Funhouse.
- While he did lie to Hajime about him losing his parents, having a disease and getting kidnapped by strangers, this was necessary since if Hajime got close to him Hajime would die and was only trying to keep him safe from his talent.
- Even after finding out the truth and that Hajime is talentless, he still cares for him
- Despite finding the truth and being disrespectful towards his friends, he still helps them catch the killer in chapter 4.

- He, alongside his classmates, invited Ryota to join them.
- He, alongside his classmates, shouldered the blame for the Final Killing Game in a broadcast for the Future Foundation, relieving the organization of any wrongdoing.
- When seeing Makoto, he was amazed and praised him telling him how much he admired him.
- He, alongside everyone in his class, was remorseful for everything they did as Ultimate Despair and decided to atone for their sins.
- After his brainwashing was undone, he appears to have abandoned his harmful ways and is shown to be at peace with his classmates.
- When Nagito sees that Kyoko has been revived thanks to Seiko’s medicine, he praises and respects Seiko even after she dies.
- Despite still having his current personality, he did grow from his past mistakes.
- It was stated that he didn't want to die alone, and that he wanted to be loved with someone beside him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He could be cold and prejudiced, being cruel to those who lacked talents and had a habit of goading people into acting destructively.
- Tries to kill everyone by making an unsolvable case in the fifth chapter (except for the traitor) after finding out that his classmates were evil brainwashed villains.
- He made Teruteru kill Byakuya instead of himself.
- Despite the good he does, he is extremely morally grey, committing almost as many villainous acts as heroic ones. His obsession with hope drives him to insanity and he is perfectly willing to allow people to kill one another if he can watch from the sidelines and cheer on the winning side. He is willing to support murderers because he believes their determination to win the killing game is something truly worthwhile.
- When considered on a practical level, Nagito Komaeda can be argued purely as an authoritarian Social Darwinist, due to his belief that people are inherently born with talent and that those who aren't should be willing die for those who do have the supposed talent.
