The truth is, we're both frauds. Your ancestors never sent me, they don't even like me. But you risked your life to help people you love. I risked your life to help myself. At least you had good intentions.
~ Mushu to Mulan.

Mushu is the deuteragonist of Mulan, and the tritagonist of Mulan II.

He is crucial to the success of Fa Mulan as her spirit guardian, having served her well against the Huns and ultimately taking them all out himself.

He was voiced by Eddie Murphy in the first film, and by Mark Moseley in the sequel.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • He tries to awaken the Great Stone Dragon, and although he breaks it, it was an accident.
  • He comes to Mulan's aid to turn her into a war hero. He is protective of her and almost attacks Li Shang before Cri-Kee grabs him.
  • He gets Cri-Kee to forge a letter so the boys can fight and hands it to Chi-Fu.
  • He believes Mulan wants a closer target to aim the last cannon at Shan Yu, and when the falcon backfires its ignition, Mushu decides to set it off himself, thinking Shan Yu is about to be skewered. When he realizes what's really going on, he frantically looks for Mulan and saves Cri-Kee's life during the avalanche. Mushu's activation of the cannon annihilates the Hun army, ensuring they never reach the Chinese capitol.
  • He admits he was being dishonest and selfish and acknowledges Mulan's deceit was justified while his deceit was not.
  • He destroys Shan Yu once and for all by shooting a firework at him.
  • He praises Cri-Kee again and puts out the fire on his antenna.
  • He resumes his guardian duties.
  • Despite trying to selfishly break up Mulan and Li Shang, his conscience takes over and he humbly apologizes for everything, determined to make it up to them.
  • He impersonates the Golden Dragon of Unity to backfire three arranged marriages with the three princesses.
  • Unlike most characters in the first movie he doesn't underestimate women and believed in Mulan from the get-go. He also cares about her where he places her safety and happiness above his own, showing a side of selflessness
  • Due to saving China by unleashing a cannon into an avalanche and later shooting a firework at Shan Yu, and later enabling the princesses to marry Yao, Ling, and Chen Po, he passes the admirable standard.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is too much of a jerk even for NPG, as he often takes shots at the horse for no reason and is extremely condescending to the ancestors, causing them to despise him and view him as a pest.
    • In fact, he even calls Yao a noodle when he was trying to turn the other cheek.
    • Despite everything he did for him, he's too rude towards Cri-Kee even attempting to blame him for shooting a cannon.
    • He called Mulan out for saving Khan over him despite being his fault that the Huns started attacking the soldiers.
    • Although the ancestors are jerks towards him, he doesn't treat them well either and even enjoys giving them orders and treating them badly.
  • He can be too selfish egocentric and arrogant, since while he did make a war hero of Mulan, disobeying the ancestors to endanger her was still blatantly unacceptable, and he kept trying to break up a happy couple in the sequel.
    • The action above is one of the reasons he became a fallen hero in the sequel.
    • Even if he did humbly apologize for both occasions, that's still way too corrupting for NPG and.
    • While Mulan forgave him for his attempts to break up her relationship with Li Shang, he clearly didn't deserve said forgiveness, specially since he mostly endangered them.

Trivia[]

  • He, along with Cogsworth, Iago, and Maui, are the only four characters in a Disney Princess film to be Inconsistently Admirable.
    • Coincidentally, these four serve as allies to a PG Heroine: Mushu for Mulan, Cogsworth for Belle, Iago for Jasmine, and Maui for Moana.
