~ Morty refuting Rick's nihilism and convincing Summer to stay with her family. |
Mortimer "Morty" Chauncey Smith Sr. is the titular deuteragonist of Rick and Morty. He is the teenage (adoptive) grandson of Rick Sanchez, the son of Beth Smith and Jerry Smith, and the younger brother of Summer Smith.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Past[]
- Him, Summer, Nancy and an unnamed friend tried to save an alien from the government.
Season 1[]
- He was the only member of the family who was kind to Snuffles, earning him the dog's love after he becomes a hegemonic warlord.
- He comes up with the concept to use the gas building up in the body to combat the disease after the crew at Anatomy Park are assaulted by gonorrhoea.
- He saved Annie from Poncho.
- When Summer discovered that she was born from an unwanted pregnancy, he convinced her not to run away from home, revealing himself to be from another universe and telling her that she can turn to him whenever things get tough for her.
- He tried to save the Plutonions from extinction.
- In Evil Morty's prison, he leads the other Morties to freedom and helped them kill Evil Rick.
- Him, Nancy and Abrodolph Lincoler head on a dangerous journey, thinking it will save their party and was furious with Rick when he found out that he was lied to.
Season 2[]
- He was willing to stop Krombopulus Michael, an assassin from assassinating a target known as Fart, despite not knowing Fart's evil nature. He later attempts to get Fart to his home dimension, refusing Rick's suggestion of killing him. He only kills Fart when he realizes Fart and his kind would commit genocide against all carbon-based life, and he is horribly traumatized by this.
- When alien parasites infest their house, Morty discovers the way to identify who's a parasite, which allows him and the rest of the family to kill the parasites and save the Earth from being infested with the parasites.
- He saved Arthricia during the purge day.
- He attempts to be polite to the lighthouse keeper and listened to his story to be a good guest, and only got angry with the lighthouse keeper when he couldn't handle the criticism he'd asked from Morty.
Season 4[]
- When Jerry foolishly helps Glootie create an app which allowed an alien species to take all of Earth's water, he and Jerry stop the aliens and save the Earth.
- Despite Balthromaw having gone behind his back and soul-bonded with Rick, he goes to rescue him, liberating all of the dragons who'd been banished from their society and freeing them from the tyrannical wizard who ruled over them.
- When Morty kills a space snake, he attempts to help the snake species and gets a new snake to send to the snake planet.
- Along with Summer, he stops the Galactic Federation from destroying the Earth and helps free their mothers.
Season 5[]
- When Rick discovers GoTron Ferrets, Morty attempts to reason with him and make sure he doesn't go overboard with his obsession. He then attempts to reason with Summer and make her realize that simply because Rick was enjoying her help didn't mean she was right in helping him.
- Despite his family having treated him horribly while part of the GoTron team, he refuses to sell them out to the original GoTron members. After realizing that Rick would be killed by the GoTron team when he'd hired them without knowing their intentions, he convinces the rest of his family to go save Rick.
- He genuinely cares for Rick and would do anything to get him back after their "break-up."
- He stopped his partner Nick from his homicidal rampage.
Season 6[]
- He saved Rick from both the Citadel's collapse and a suicidal revenge plot against Rick Prime, his real grandpa.
- He helped his family fight against their Night personas.
- With Joseph Campbell's help, he convinced Jan to give up with powering Story Lord, allowing Rick to defeat him.
Season 7[]
- He initially rebelled against Rick upon discovering he was using dead humans to feed his family spaghetti, while also wanting to attend the funerals of the victims.
- He took part in helping stop Rick Prime alongside his grandfather and Evil Morty.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- While he’s not as heinous as his grandfather, he still plays an occasional villainous role in the show.
- Stemming from his naive nature and insecurities, he is easily tricked into doing bad things, most often by Rick.
- In recent episodes, he has become somewhat morally corrupt due to Rick's influence and become less sensitive to death.
- He abandoned his family from his original dimension with Rick and did nothing to try to save them until it was much too late.
- He indirectly caused the Cronenberg outbreak by asking Rick to make him a love potion for his crush, Jessica.
- Though to be fair, Morty did not know the disastrous consequences that would occur from this. He even asked Rick if there were any side-effects or dangers of using the potion, but Rick told him there were none, forgetting to mention what would happen if she had the flu. Had Rick mentioned this to him, Morty likely would not have used the love potion in the first place.
- Like other members of the family, he has frequently ridiculed his father, Jerry for little to no reason.
- He got a teacher fired from Harry Herpeson High School because he thought he was from the moon. This teacher ended up committing suicide. Though to be fair, his judgment was somewhat justified considering all of the ridiculous things Morty had seen while on his adventures with Rick.
- On multiple occasions, he has let his perverted side get the better of him and cause problems for other people.
- He groped his teachers nipples in a delirious state.
- He had sex with a robotic doll and accidentally impregnated it.
- He masturbated to Summer's friend thinking she was gone.
- He used a magnet to take every attractive ginger girl in a 10 mile radius.
- He used his checkpoint powers to spy on a girl's locker room.
- The worst possible example is when his masturbation caused the rise of mutated sperm monsters (including accidentally procreating with Summer and creating their son Naruto) and did everything in his power to hide the blame from himself.
- He turned Ethan into a grotesque mutant. While he did break up with Summer and caused her to go on an insecure rampage, Ethan in no way deserved this fate.
- There have been a few moments showing Morty has signs of repressed rage:
- He killed countless people on the purge planet, starting with a polite lighthouse owner who invited him to his house but ended up wanting to kick out Morty after feeling insulted by him. He then murdered innocent survivors trying to hide from the violence. This reached the point where Rick had to knock him out and calm him down. At first it was believed that this was under the influence of purge bars, but it was later revealed he did this out of his own accord.
- During his rescue operation, he was fully willing to shoot Rick in the head with a gun for calling him stupid. While he shot him with a fake gun, Morty did not know it was fake.
- He went on a mass murder spree and destructive phase when attaching the death crystal to himself. While this started out as getting revenge on bullies, it quickly escalated to a full-scale attack on the military.
- He tried to kill three weapons dealers simply because he didn't want to hide in a fake vat of acid any longer.
- He committed genocide against a race called the Narnians because he wanted to bring wine to his crush, Jessica. While this started out because of accidentally bringing a Narnian to Earth and not knowing of the time dilation, causing the Narnian's son to get revenge and kill the father, he eventually used sci-fi tools and waged a full-on war against them.
