| ~ Misato trying to help Shinji with his guilt in End of Evangelion. |
Misato Katsuragi is one of the main characters, being the deuteragonist, in Neon Genesis Evangelion, and its reboot, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Rebuild. She is the chief operations officer of NERV, being the one to direct the pilots in their missions against the angels.
She is also the caretaker of the pilots Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu, as well as the love of interest of Ryōji Kaji, with the two having a long history together, having been broken up since before the series but with lingering feelings toward each other. In the film series, she is the mother of their son, naming him after his father.
She is voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi in the original Japanese version, Alison Keith in the original English dub by ADV Films, and Carrie Keranen in the newer English dub on Netflix.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Admirable?[]
In General[]
- She was the head of the operations department of NERV, responsible for planning out the strategies and battle tactics that the pilots of the Evas use and that the rest of NERV uses to combat the Angels. This makes her indirectly responsible for nearly all the instances of Shinji, Asuka and Rei saving the world numerous times.
- She is one of the few NERV officers that actually cares for the mental well-being of the pilots, mainly Shinji, making sure they are looked after and in good condition to fight.
- While she did have various psychological trauma and issues of her own, she still chooses to prioritize her task of saving the world over all else.
- Though she initially viewed Shinji Ikari as a means to an end in order for him to save the world from Angels, she gradually came to understand him and try her best to make sure he was able to hold up amongst the many impactful events throughout his time as a pilot.
- Even though her relationship with Shinji can be problematic in terms of her flaunting her sexuality enough to evoke a response from Shinji, and though she did slightly joke about this to Ritsuko, she makes it more than clear that she would never actually cross this line with him.
- Once she finds out that NERV is not telling the truth behind their actions from Kaji, she seeks to uncover their main goal, and does what she can to protect the world from SEELE's overarching goal.
Neon Genesis Evangelion[]
- As soon as she picked up Shinji, she made sure to cheer him up and made him feel at home when inviting him to her apartment.
- When there was a fight against an Angel nearby during their drive to her apartment, she covered Shinji to protect him from recoil.
- She specifically asked to take in Shinji to make sure he was not alone and mentally accounted for.
- She initially disapproved of Ritsuko not being concerned that Shinji was to pilot the Eva even though he was just a teenager.
- When Shinji is fighting the Angel Shamshel in Eva Unit-01, she protects Toji and Kensuke from damage by telling Shinji to let in the two into the passenger chamber.
- She tries to stop the Jet Alone when it went berserk, taking Shinji along to bring her into their robot and manually enter in a kill code to stop the robot's rampage, and later trying to push out the control rods into the Jet Alone's reactor. While the robot ended up being shut down by Gendo and Ritsuko due to it being part of a stunt they planned, she was still willing to risk her life in stopping the robot.
- She came up with a plan to stop Gaghiel by taking two ships to lure the angel as bait and having Shinji and Asuka forcibly open the angel's mouth, and fire into it.
- She decided for Asuka to stay at her apartment in order for them to work better together, and synchronize with each other for an attack against the gemini angel Israfel.
- She made sure Shinji and Asuka maintained good academic performance, which indirectly resulted in Asuka and Shinji talking about thermal expansion, and this helped Asuka defeat the angel Sandalphon when she had to recover its embryo in magma through expanding her suit and blasting it.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She can be wrathful toward others at times, sometimes for trivial reasons.
- She was intolerant of Shinji's self-deprecating comments, but responded in ways such as "you're more trouble than you're worth", or even telling him to give up if he kept up said behavior, which is too much.
- She did hit Kaji a few times whenever he flirted with other women in front of her, or acted flirtatiously toward her.
- Her relationship with Shinji is too corrupting for her to be Near Pure Good, as it eventually breached professional and even personal boundaries.
- In the beginning of the series, she gave Shinji a picture of her scantily clad to let him know who to look for when picking him up.
- She complimented Shinji on his "cute face", and though this was relatively harmless this would imply what would follow.
- In one instance, she attempted to comfort Shinji of Kaji's death by appearing to offer him intercourse. While this appears somewhat ambiguous, it is implied by the previous scene of Shinji lying in his bed in the foreground, with his chair being placed in the background such that it looks as though there is an erect phallic shape, followed by Misato sitting down next to Shinji and blocking it. It is also supported by Misato apologizing after Shinji tells her to stop, and she questions if he is afraid of women.
- In End of Evangelion, she kissed Shinji on the lips as a way to comfort him, telling him that "this is how grown-ups kiss", and that they would practice afterward, only to push him out of the facilities before getting shot. While this was to motivate him into get the Evangelion, this is still too questionable a way to try to get him into the Evangelion. Moreover, this would indirectly result in him temporarily choosing Human Instrumentality due to the horrors he saw while in the Eva.
- While she did look after and try to comfort Shinji, she did not spend nearly as much time focusing on Asuka, which may have partly contributed to her increasing insecurities on top of losing in synchronization tests to Shinji and losing against Angels. As a result, her mental stability spiraled and she ended up comatose for the first part of End of Evangelion.
- Her methods of fighting the Angels can be quite reckless and extreme, putting Shinji, Asuka, and Rei in life-threatening situations, despite their disapproval.
- She plans Operation Yashima to take all the power of Japan for a positron beam rifle to fire at the angel Ramiel with as much power as possible, which caused a 12-hour-long power outage. This resulted in the Eva Unit-00 being partially melted due to Rei missing her first shot firing the weapon at the angel, resulting in the Angel firing an AT Field and damaging it.
- She let Asuka pilot Eva Unit-02 to fight against the sea angel Gaghiel, in spite of the Evas only having B-Type equipment and not being able to fight underwater, which nearly resulted in Shinji and Asuka getting killed. Right after, she planned to lure in two ships as bait, which nearly resulted in a lot of destruction of property.
- She's way too emotionally troubled for her own good, to the point of not being emotionally available to others when needed, especially with Shinji, running away from her problems instead of facing and learning from them. To elaborate, many aspects of her character — her corrupting factors above included — were shaped by unresolved parental issues (up until his sacrifice during the Second Impact, she resented her late father, Dr. Katsuragi, for being too workaholic to spend his time with others, even his own family that his wife and Misato's mother eventually left) and turmoil which plagued the world after Second Impact. Unfortunately, such Freudian Excuses could barely hold up at best because she allowed them to negatively affect her ability to form meaningful ties with others, let alone being the parental figure Shinji and Asuka, whom she neglected in comparison to Shinji, needed and doing the right thing all at her fullest. As Hideaki Anno put it regarding Misato; " ...a woman, twenty-nine, who lives life so lightly as to barely allow the possibility of human touch. She protects herself by keeping relationships on the surface, and by running away."
Trivia[]
- It is unknown if Misato's Rebuild version counts or not, though it is likely so given she has different severe corrupting factors in that version as well as nearly the same admirable actions as her original version.
- Her Transformers "Mode" EVA counterpart doesn't count as that version lacks her biggest corrupting factors with only lacking some characterization.
