Miles Upshur is the main protagonist of Outlast and a minor protagonist in Outlast: Whistleblower. He is an investigative journalist that travels to Mount Massive Asylum after receiving a tip from an anonymous source, but soon ends up stuck in the asylum with all it's murderous patients due to the experiments inflicted upon them, forcing him to go through hell in order to escape with his story alive.

He was voiced by Shawn Baichoo.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • After getting an anonymous tip from Waylon Park, he decides to head to Mount Massive Asylum and attempt to expose Murkoff for their horrible experiments.
  • After being kidnapped by Father Martin and taken to the prison, he makes it his goal to record as much evidence as possible during his escape so that he can expose Murkoff once he gets out.
  • While this act was mostly in self defense, Miles still prevented Richard Trager from killing and torturing anymore patients by killing him during his escape.
  • When Father Martin requests for him to record him being burnt alive, Miles honours his dying wish and reveals in one of his notes that he will tell the whole world about Martin's gospel.
  • After Walker was killed brutally by the Walrider, Miles felt sympathy for him and said that Walker had escaped hell in one of his notes and hoped that Walker wasn't sent to another.
  • After hearing from Wernicke that no one can escape the asylum while Billy (the host for the Walrider) exists, Miles was willing to risk his life in order to kill Billy and finally put an end to the Walrider.
  • Even after he was greatly weakened due to the Walrider possessing him as a new host, Miles still attempted to escape so that he could expose Murkoff, before being shot to death by Wernicke's men, although he would be revived as the Walrider and kill Wernicke's men.
  • Upon seeing Jeremy Blaire attempting to kill Waylon Park, Miles would fly in and save Waylon's life by tearing Blaire apart and help Waylon get back to his house safely in order to upload his own evidence to expose Murkoff, succeeding in his goal indirectly.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has multiple moments of being a jerk that happen too much for him to be Near Pure Good. Such as mocking Chris Walker's mutilated face and calling him "a big ugly f--ker", calling Father Martin a "doughy old man with a face like an alcoholic kiddy fiddler", calling Trager "a sick f--ker" and making fun of the way he speaks, saying that he "talks like a white collar business school douchebag", him making a dark joke over Trager's death, calling Father Martin's beliefs "a line of bullshit" and saying that he doesn't think he will miss him after his death and him calling Billy Hope a lunatic.
  • He can be wrathful at times, saying that he "wants to see Trager f--king die" after he cut his fingers off, writing down in one of his notes that he wants to mutilate Wernicke's corpse with a hacksaw for hours and after witnessing the machines that keep Billy alive, he gets aggressive about it, saying "f--k it all, break it all, he has to die"
