Michael "Mike" Thomas Wazowski is one of the two main protagonists (alongside James P. Sullivan) of Pixar's Monsters, Inc. franchise.
He is Sulley's best friend, assistant, coach, and former arch-rival and Randall's former friend-turned-enemy and Celia Mae's boyfriend.
He is voiced by Billy Crystal in both films, and Noah Johnston as a child in the prequel.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Monsters University[]
- He was very friendly with everyone as a kid, even though many of his classmates bullied him.
- He gives Randall encouragement by saying his ability to camouflage was a great trick, but to get rid of the glasses. This would help Randall become a better scarer. Unfortunately, this advice came back to bite him when Randall turned against him.
- He tries to boost Oozma Kappa's confidence by taking them to Monsters, Inc. and showing them they could use their different appearances to their advantage, even if they didn't look like typical scarers.
- He expresses remorse over having been so arrogant and jerkish towards the members of Oozma Kappa.
- He helps Oozma Kappa any way he can in the games, and despite their level of incompetence, he never gave up on them, even calling them the scariest monsters he had ever met and telling them to not let anyone tell them otherwise before he and Sulley left Monsters University.
- After he learns how insecure Sulley is, he helps and encourages him, which allowed him to scare the local rangers who had come to investigate the camp after reports of a bear (which was actually Sulley) and generate enough energy to power the door from the other side and fill every scream can in the room. Before that, Sulley thought adults couldn't get scared. He also motivates Sulley to be himself rather than trying to live up to his family name, in other words, how he thinks others expect him to act, meaning he played a notable part in his positive character development.
- He is grateful for Sulley's words of encouragement when they're about to leave Monsters University.
- Despite their initial rivalry, he and Sulley became friends for the rest of their lives.
Monsters, Inc.[]
- He wasn't upset and didn’t notice that they cut off his face on the Monsters, Inc. TV commercial and was instead happy to have been in it at all, despite being an egotist. He has a similar reaction to him and Sulley being on the cover of a magazine with his face being covered by the bar code at the end of the movie.
- He cares and loves his girlfriend, Celia, and wants to take her to the best restaurant in town.
- He thanks Sully for hooking him up with reservations to Harryhausens.
- When Celia is taken away by members of the CDA, he attempts to help her, but is dragged away by Sulley so they wouldn't be quarantined.
- Although he tried to get rid of Boo in selfish ways at first, such as attempting to send her through a door he knew wasn't hers and trying to force Sulley to send Boo through her door after stating Randall set it up and knowing Randall was after Boo and couldn't be trusted, he fully subverts this trait by the end, partly due to being kidnapped and subjected to the scream extractor by Randall as a result of the latter.
- When Randall threatened him with the scream extractor, he refused to tell him where Boo was and help him with his evil plans.
- Despite initially refusing to help Sulley, he eventually follows him back to Monsters, Inc. and even indirectly saves his life by revealing Randall's location him when he throws a snowball at him. Mike also apologizes for not having gone with him earlier, saying to Sulley that there was nothing more important than their friendship.
- He helps fight Randall in the doors room and destroys the door Sulley throws him through to prevent his return.
- After Waternoose is tricked in thinking Boo was in the bed, Mike records his confession and exposes him as the obsessed kidnapper he is.
- Though not initially interested in her, he learned to care for Boo too. When they're about to return Boo home, he gives her a handshake, and when she responds with a hug, he reciprocates the embrace.
- When Sulley is saddened over Boo and Monsters, Inc. being shut down, Mike encourages him by reminding Sulley they accomplished their job and safely returned Boo home.
- He rebuilds Boo's door so Sulley can see her once more, severely blistering his hands in the process.
- He and Sulley discovered that laugh energy was ten times more powerful than scream energy and could be obtained without scaring the children, but amusing them instead, which not only solved the power problem, but also allowed the monsters to work in a less morally questionable way.
Monsters at Work[]
- After the transition to laugh power, he becomes Monsters, Inc's top jokester and Vice-CEO and plays a big part in keeping them afloat even when they're struggling to find more jokesters, to the point that in one episode, he runs himself ragged working 18 hours straight.
- His first action as Vice-CEO of Monsters, Inc. is promoting Celia to floor supervisor.
- He creates a comedy class for scarers to become jokesters.
- He and Sulley forgive the members of MIFT for nearly getting Monsters, Inc. shut down due to their reckless and idiotic behavior.
- He and Sulley take care of an infant child, Snore, while MIFT repairs the damage to the child's room, and Mike eventually grows attached to the child, reluctantly returning Snore home.
- Mike even stood up to the Red Shocks super fan who called the baby girl stupid. Mike didn't want to fight him at first but he eventually lost his temper when the fan insulted him and the baby.
- He promotes Tyler to a jokester in the season finale after admiring his persistence and plays a pivotal part in helping the company generate one million gigglewatts in a day to save them from being shut down, by using the big canister to gain more power and gaining the last gigglewatts to save Monsters Inc.
- Sometime during Season 2, Mike and Sulley hired Roger Rogers (who is really Waternoose's son) without judging him at all and even believing that he is not like his father.
- Like Sulley, he defends him against Tylor's accusations about Roger when found out the truth and accused him of being the one sabotaging Monsters Inc.
- He and Sulley develop a team-building exercise in order to get the employees to cooperate, successfully getting them to work together against the "Shrieker", which was just him and Sulley in costume.
- Although he and Sulley ended up accusing Tylor for sabotaging Monsters Inc. (when it was really Randall), it was mainly because Duncan found more evidence in Tylor's locker (in which Randall put in there). Not to mention, they re-hire him after he exposed Johnny for stealing their laugh energy.
- He signs all the paperwork to transfer power to FearCo in a deliberately slow manner when Sulley believes that Roz may know something they don't.
- He and Sulley forgive Tylor for accusing Roger and title him and Val as Monsters Inc.'s first official comedy duo.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has multiple moments of arrogance and egotism that are too recurring and consistent, such as his rivalry with Gary, him calling Sulley’s family to tell them how good the former was, Aka himself, and his extremely long title as the Vice President of Monsters Inc or Senior Co-President of Monsters, Incorporated and Chief Executive Vice-Deputy Administrative Director of Comedy Resources Management, or SCPOMICE-VDADOCREM.
- After being put in charge of running Monsters, Inc. along with Sulley, he's not above occasionally using his position for personal gain, like immediately buying an expensive sports car for himself with the company's funds, or using immoral methods like trying to bribe Argus Blinks, a safety inspector who's checking to see if any unethical actions have taken place, to give them a free pass. He even uses his role to lift the ban from Harryhausens, to which him and Sulley have been banned for life from.
- He has a short temper and is a cranky jerk sometimes, such as when he would yell at Sulley or lie to Celia. However, his arrogance, sometimes have an understandable catalyst.
- He got into an argument and started a fight with a rival fan monster at a baseball game, and tried to punch him.
- He's rather petty and vindictive, as he constantly tries picking a fight with Johnny Worthington due to their rivalry back in college. Despite it having been 10 years since then, he wanted to humiliate him to settle the score.
