Mettaton is a major antagonist in the 2015 indie RPG game Undertale.
He is a ghost, as well as Napstablook's cousin and a good friend of Dr. Alphys, who was given a robotic body by the latter and, with it, became the biggest celebrity among the Monsters in the Underground, with a successful TV Show, various movies, an hotel, a fast food chain, etc. When the human child, Frisk, falls into the Underground, Mettaton will initially help put up an act to make Alphys look like a hero to Frisk, but will later show his true agenda, as he plans to absorb Frisk's SOUL, cross the Barrier with it, and achieve true stardom by becoming a celebrity on the surface.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Ranging anywhere from months to years, he entertained the Underground as its sole celebrity, bringing joy to many monsters.
- He helped in making his friend Alphys look like a hero by pretending to be a homicidal AI, at least until he actually went homicidal.
- He tried to save humanity from Asgore's genocide by stealing Frisk's SOUL so that Asgore couldn't take it to cross the Barrier and exterminate humanity.
- If defeated through violence, he admits that he was mistaken when claiming Frisk was weak, and that they could defeat Asgore.
- If defeated through mercy, he admits that he was selfish when trying to cross the Barrier by himself, and thinks that he should stay in the Underground for a little longer given that he's its only star.
- On the True Pacifist Route, he convinces Alphys and Undyne to confess their feelings and kiss.
- In the epilogue for True Pacifist, he invites Napstablook, Shyren, and even Burgerpants into his band so that they could perform together.
- Despite being a horrible friend to Alphys and ditching Napstablook the second they get the chance to become popular, it's clear that Mettaton genuinely cares for them, and admits that he was treating the former poorly in some endings.
- He also reunites with Napstablook in the Pacifist Ending and forms a band with him and Shyren on the surface.
- In the Genocide Run, he tries to protect both monsterkind and humankind by challenging Frisk to a fight, even if he goes down in one hit.
- Even in the King Mettaton ending, where he outright crosses the Moral Event Horizon (allowed the Underground to fall into economic despair and neglected the crowding and education problems, justifying by “covering it all with glitter”,) it's shown he build a statue of Alphys as a way of making up for his treatment of her.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Has a massive ego, to the point of adding a statue of him on a fountain that serves as a memorial of Chara and Asriel's deaths. Even his goal to save humanity is partly motivated by egotistical wish to become famous on surface.
- He tries to kill Frisk and steal their SOUL, outright hiring assassins for it even if it was for a good reason.
- He poorly treats Alphys, pushing her to make his robotic body and humiliating her on live TV, although he later feels remorse for it.
- He's a horrible boss to Burgerpants, and it's mentioned he has an album full of songs about how he's bad at his job.
- He displays sadistic glee in getting to kill Frisk himself.
- In the mentioned King Mettaton ending, he turns the Underground into a dictatorship with awful economy where he brainwashes his people (figuratively or literally, that's unknown) and makes everyone who doesn't worship him "disappear".
- Because of this, it's possible that he forced Sans and Papyrus to become his bouncers, or least the former since the latter makes it clear that he genuinely enjoys being his idol's agent.
Trivia[]
- Mettaton wasn't originally considered to be IA as it was thought his actions were bog-standard. Later on, it was mentioned he tried to save humanity from extermination, an act that wasn't committed by anyone else, which caused him to be reevaluated and approved.
