Merida is the main protagonist of Pixar's 13th full-length animated feature film Brave. She is also the 11th Disney Princess in the official line-up and the first official Disney Princess that is from a Pixar film.

She is the rebellious princess of the kingdom of DunBroch, and gets in lots of problems due to having arguments with her mother on how a princess should act, and about how she doesn't want to have an arranged marriage. She then tried to make her mother see things the way she did by using magic, but this actually turned her mother, Queen Elinor, into a huge bear, and now Merida must fix her mistakes and re-bond with her mother to bring her back.

She was voiced by Kelly Macdonald.

What Makes Her Admirable?[]

In spite of their discussions, she loves her family a lot.
Cutting her mother's tapestry with her sword was justified, as she was trying to model her into something she isn't, so Merida had a very good reason to want to cut ties with her.
She loves her horse and takes good care of it.
She rebelled against the arranged marriage, as it was in fact a dysfunctional system that involved taking freedom from people's lives before they could even begin, and she even made a speech to the others clans in front of all the lords against it, and as many princess of the other clans agreed, this helped improve their lives and Merida's herself.
- She also ended a war between all four clans by giving the speech that brought the 4 lords together and see each other as equals that didn't need to marry Merida to be the greatest one of them all.
She felt remorse for accidentally turning her mother into a bear, and took care of her while she tried to discover a way to bring her back, by going in the Witch's house.
Defended her mother against Fergus and the people in the castle that attacked her when they mistakenly think Elinor was Mor'du.
Helped defeat Mor'du, an Inconsistently Heinous cursed bear that killed thousands of people, and he himself seemed grateful to Merida after he died, meaning she and those who helped defeat him freed his spirit.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

She has a short-temper that leads her to lash out on others, when she could try to find another way of solving arguments.
She accidentally turned her mother into a bear, causing the movie's second half conflicts. Although accidental, the magical cake she gave her was said to "change her destiny", and as it doesn't specify what this actually means, it was reckless to give her the cake. Nevertheless, this actions indirectly caused the solution for her problems with her mother.
She has many jerk moments that are too severe.

Trivia[]

She and Mor'du are a representation of a better and a worse destiny to each other, as both had similar family issues, but Mor'du let them corrupt and take over him, while Merida eventually overthrew them. Coincidentally, Merida is Inconsistently Admirable while Mor'du is Inconsistently Heinous.
