~ Megatron to Optimus in regard to Cybertron's future |
Megatron is the main antagonist of Peter David's novelizations of Michael Bay's Transformers Film Series based on the Hasbro toyline.
He is the tyranical leader of the Decepticons who waged war for thousands of years resulting in the death of Cybertron and now has teamed up with former Autobot leader Sentienl Prime to use a Space Bridge to bring Cybertron back by using Earth's resources. While his original film counterpart wishes to conquer both planets and as such dies at Optimus' hand, this version is a more noble extremist who actually redeems himself in the end.
He was voiced by Hugo Weaving who also played V in V for Vendetta.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- In Spite of the Film Series having a relaitvely high admirable standard, Megatron's truce with Optimus as well as being the one to stop Sentinel definetly allow him to stand out enough to qualify, choosing to become a better bot and spare the life of his greatest enemy, restoring their former bond as well as abandoning his wrath against Autobots and humans.
- Furthermore, since Age of Extinction and The Last Knight weren't adapted by Peter David, the admirable standard is lower than in the final Film Version.
[]
- While he did start the Great War that led to Cybertron's death in the first place, he is a genuine extremist who wishes to restore his home to it's former glory and only wants the destruction of Earth in order to ensure the survival of his kind.
- After Carly Spencer insults him and calls him out for how fall he's fallen, stating he's nothing more than Sentinel's lapdog, Megatron realizes his wrongdoings and chooses to turn on Sentinel.
- He saves Optimus from being killed by Sentinel at the last minute, weakening the Fallen Prime with his shotgun before beating him down hand-to-hand, not only saving Optimus but preventing Sentinel from claiming more lives and completing his plan to destroy Earth.
Exclusive to Novelization[]
- Upon discovering The Fallen was merely using him as means to an end and was never going to make him a Prime, he willingly abandons him.
- While he's not the greatest leader to his troops, he seems to have some respect for his soldiers and is slightly benevolent to the newly forged Hatchlings.
- After Sentinel's death, he calls a genuine truce with Optimus, having grown tired of the constant death and destruction caused by their conflict, finally ending the Great War once and for all. Furthermore, he was willing to let Optimus shoot him down to prove his intentions were genuine and not pragmatic.
- He vows to rebuild Cybertron once more with peace between Autobots and Decepticons, having both factions work as one.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- In spite of choosing to stop all forms of violence among the Decepticons, his actions in Chicago are still far too severe for him to qualify as NPG, given that he completely destroyed a city and amassed a massive kill count of millions of innocent humans, not to mention that the city is left in it's destroyed state at the end with Megatron doing nothing to help rebuild.
- He also never shows any remorse for any of his previous crimes and even if he did, they are still far too heinous and brutal to ignore:
- He started the Great War which would lead to the near-extinction of the Cybertronian race as well as the death of Cybertron which is what forced the Transformers offworld and into Earth in the first place. Once on Earth, upon being set free, he ordered his Decepticons to bring him the Allspark, not caring about the lives lost in the battle. In said battle he also brutally killed Jazz by splitting him in half with his bare hands.
- He was willing to let The Fallen destroy the Earth's sun which would lead to the death of all biological life on the planet, as long as he was made a Prime. While he does abandon The Fallen willingly, he doesn't actually try to help stop him from using the harvester to consume the sun.
- He is still an extremely lethal and sadistic individual who actively chooses to kill any and all foes in combat as shown with his brutal assault on Sentinel.
- He is horribly abusive of his second-in-command Starscream often beating him for his failings and at times for little to no reason at all other than for his own entertainment. While Starscream is a Pure Evil Sadist who often tries to usurp Megatron as leader, it still doesn't change the fact that Megatron actively tortured the seeker and several times without provocation.
Trivia[]
- This is the second version of Megatron to qualify as Inconsistently Admirable, after his IDW Comics Counterpart who has also served as the inspiration for most versions of the character since.
- Megatron's redemption was meant to happen in Dark of the Moon as well, however due to the ending being leaked ahead of schedule, Michael Bay choose to change it to Megatron's death, leaving only the novelization with the original ending. Had the ending been kept, Megatron's film version could have been IA as well.
- Neither his Film nor Video Game Counterparts count due to being hegemonic tyrants who never changed for the better.
