Master Roshi is a major character in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is the perverted master of Goku, Krillin & Yamcha, the unoffical master of Tien & Chiaotzu, and the founder of the Turtle School. He is also a member of the Z-Fighters, a group dedicated to fighting for the universe.
He was voiced the late Hiroshi Masuoka in the Japanese version and Mike McFarland in the English version.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
In General[]
- Unlike some of Goku's friends, who were villains or at least antagonists at the start, Roshi was never a villain and was a hero to begin with.
- When his master Mutaito sealed King Piccolo away, Roshi dropped the Demon King into the bottom of the ocean to make sure he would never cause anymore trouble.
- He trained Goku's adoptive grandfather, Gohan, and Chi-Chi's father, the Ox King, before the series had started.
- Also, he created the signature technique: the Kamehameha Wave, something that has become vital in numerous battles throughout the series.
- He was the one who helped Goku, Krillin and Yamcha become the noble heroes they are today, being their martial arts teacher throughout their youth.
- After the Majin Buu conflict, he decided to train again, in secret, in order to catch up with the Z Fighters
Dragon Ball classic[]
- Gave Goku the Flying Numbus as an award for saving Turtle.
- Put out the fire in the Fire Kingdom with a Kamehameha, saving the whole kingdom (although he ended up accidentally destroying the castle).
- While supervising both Goku & Krillin during their training, every time Krillin attempted to cheat (excluding the search for the "turtle" stone), he forced him to start over the current stage training he's at until that has been done correctly.
- The reason he participated the 21st World Tournament as Jackie Chun is because he wanted to prevent Goku, Krillin, and technically Yamcha from winning the tournament so that they wouldn't let fame get too much in their heads.
- He helped Nam's village get through a drought by giving the latter a capsule to store tons of water in.
- When Goku turned into a Great Ape by looking at a full moon, Roshi destroyed said moon to turn him back to normal, saving multiple lives in the process.
- Like the early members of the Dragon Team, Roshi chose not to tell Goku that the latter is the Great Ape that killed his adoptive grandfather in order to spare his feelings (he would eventually find out on his own many years later.)
- Prevented the Red Ribbon Army from stealing the Dragon Balls.
- He and his students helped to reform Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu, who were originally students of the Crane Hermit and Mercenary Tao, convincing them to change for the better.
- He sent the Crane Hermit flying when the latter tries to interfere Goku and Tien's match at 22nd World Tournament finals.
- Sacrificed his life to try and seal King Piccolo away with the Evil Containment Wave.
- While dying, he vowed to King Piccolo that someone else will take the former's place to kill the latter (Goku eventually did so).
- He decided not to participate any Earth based tournaments anymore because he trusts his students (and as well as Tien & Chiaotzu) enough to be consistently honorable fighters.
- Roshi reassures Kami that the latter does an excellent job of being Guardian of the Earth and the existence of the Dragon Balls impacts Goku and his friends by led them become better people and even help out those in need.
Dragon Ball Z[]
- He and Krillin tried to team up with Goku to fight Raditz.
- Even though it was not his fault, he blamed himself for not getting strong enough to help out the Z Fighters during the Saiyan conflict (and the following DBZ conflicts after that).
- Anime only: When Goku is not yet recovered his injuries from Vegeta and attempted to escape, he and Chi-Chi made sure that he stayed at the hospital.
- Comforted Krillin and told him not to blame himself about Cell's actions of absorbing Android 18.
- Lent his energy to Goku to help him defeat Kid Buu.
Dragon Ball Super[]
- Fought off the Frieza Force to keep them from destroying Earth.
- Taught Goku the Evil Containment Wave to help him in his fight with Goku Black and Future Zamasu.
- Fought in the Tournament of Power to save Universe 7 from destruction.
- Before participating the tournament, he and most members of Team Universe 7 are not too happy about Goku recuits Frieza to be part of the team.
- Manga only: He helped Goku to unlock Ultra Instinct while using a similar technique to fight off Jiren.
- Assisted the Z Fighters and Galactic Patrol in order to fight off Moro and his army.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is way too perverted to be PG or even NPG, as he sexually harasses many of the female characters numerous times (mainly Bulma, Chi-Chi, Videl and Android 18), and this has gotten himself beaten up by them a few times. Even though he doesn't do it as much as he did before, it happened way too much beforehand and he never apologized or showed remorse for it:
- He's shown multiple times to be an ephebophile.
- His portrayal in the anime is even worse when his habit of sexual harassment increases on women and teenage girls including those who are already married. Most notably towards both Maron (an expy of Bulma) and Yurin (an expy of Chi-Chi) from DBZ & DBS respectively.
- He struck a deal with Bulma that he would give her a Dragon Ball in exchange for her flashing her underwear. Even though Bulma, while being unaware, was completely bottomless when she accepted the deal, Roshi didn't attempt to warn her about that.
- He once tried to grope Ranfan after she lost at the 21st World Tournament quarter finals.
- He forced Bulma (Yamcha's then girlfriend) to stay at the Kame House against her will so that he would allow Yamcha to train under him.
- While Bulma and Launch stayed at the Kame House, he tried to see their naked butts while they were using the bathroom.
- (Anime only): In the 23rd World Tournament Saga, he groped a flight attendant's butt.
- (Anime only): In the Saiyan Saga, he groped Bulma's butt while watching the Z Fighters fighting Nappa.
- In the Frieza Saga, he groped a nurse's butt and made excuses on why he did that.
- (Anime only): In Garlic Jr. Saga, When Chi-Chi was too busy angry and ranting at Maron for insulting the former's age, Roshi, while he and the Dragon Team restrained her, took the opportunity to plant his face on Chi-Chi's breasts knowing that she won't attack him for it and he enjoyed every second of that moment.
- (Anime only): In the Cell Saga, he groped Chi-Chi's butt in every chance he gets while she was at the Kame House until she returned home. Unlike the aforemention saga, she attacked him every time he did that.
- Throughout the Buu Saga, at least in the anime, he used every opportunity he gets to grope Bulma's butt without her noticing and once planted his face on her breasts.
- (Anime only): He planted his face on Android 18's breasts in front of her daughter Marron. While it was an accident at first, he then purposely rubbed his face on 18's breasts, as well as groping them, causing 18 to (non lethally) crush his head for it.
- (Anime only): He attempted to flirt with Videl (who was a teenager at the time as well Gohan's girlfriend and later wife) and nonconsensually poked her breasts only for Videl to slap Master Roshi immediately.
- After Majin Buu was escorted by Piccolo to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, he groped Bulma's butt again before she slapped him.
- In Dragon Ball Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Returns!!, he tries to grope Chi-Chi's breasts before she smacked him with her frying pan.
- In the Battle of Gods film, he attempted to kiss Videl when she was accidentally shot in the leg as a way of "healing" her before getting slapped by Bulma right away.
- During his fight with Kyawei in the Tournament of Power, he attempted to sexually harass her, causing her to run off the ring in fear and discomfort. This is a rare minor prevention because it turns out Roshi was pretending to do that in order to not directly harm her physically.
- Even though they're his enemies, Roshi made Moro's three female underlings (Miza, Iwaza and Kikaza) feel uncomfortable of his lecherous actions.
- In the Cross episode of Dragon Ball Z, Toriko and One Piece, he tries to sexually harass Nami (the One Piece counterpart of Bulma) by placing his face to her breasts, only for the Navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates to kick him much like Bulma.
- He has many moments where he can be incompetent and a huge jerk;
- On a few occasions, he hits people on the head with his staff for even the smallest reasons.
- He harshly scolded Goku for attacking Launch (the bad side; not the good side of her), even though Goku did it out of self defense.
- He said Goku isn't pure enough to become a Super Saiyan God, much to Chi-Chi's anger.
- He strangled Oolong when he tried to make a wish with the Earth's Dragon Balls. It should be noted that while Oolong is also a huge pervert (and worse than Roshi since Oolong once tried to rape Bulma) and would most likely planned on making a perverted wish, Roshi himself had done similar acts numerous times, which makes him hypocritical.
- He committed human trafficking by using Goku and Kriilin (who were children at the time) to find a pretty girl (which is how they met Launch). Even though Krillin is only one who fully aware of this and willing to do it, it's still wrong for Roshi to exploit children to find girls of his liking.
