Now that's a real badge, I'm a real cop, and this is a real f*cking gun!
~ Martin Riggs while arresting a criminal.

Martin Riggs is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Roger Murtaugh) of the Lethal Weapon film series.

He is a reckless and suicidal LAPD cop who is depressed over the loss of his wife, Victoria Lynn, but soon gets partnered with an elderly veteran, Roger Murtaugh and they become best friends over the course of the series.

He was portrayed by Mel Gibson.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

Alongside Roger Murtaugh[]

  • Although he and Murtaugh didn't like each other at first, they still worked together and form a friendship by the end of the first movie.
  • They saved countless lives from danger multiple times.
  • They stopped General Peter McAllister and Jack Joshua's plan to sell heroin and saved Rianne from McAllister.
  • They protected Leo Getz from the South African diplomats and saved him when he was captured by them, even if he was annoying to them.
  • They stopped Arjen Rudd and Pieter Vorstedt's plan to smuggle illegal shipments of gold krugerrands.
  • They stopped Jack Travis' plan to sell dangerous weapons and his arms dealership.
  • They stopped Wah Sing Ku's plan to get the Four Fathers out of prison and buying their freedom with counterfeit money.

On His Own Accord[]

  • Although Riggs was suicidal and anti-heroic at first, he started to subvert those qualities over the course of the films and eventually by the fourth film and becomes more heroic and friendly after being part of a family.
  • He cares about his best friend and partner Roger.
  • He cares about his pet dogs, Sam and a Rottweiler and protected Sam from harm.
  • Also, Riggs constantly tormented Leo, he subverted that by the end of the fourth film after hearing his backstory and realizing how much of a good friend he is and admits he was terrible to him.
  • He loves his deceased wife Victoria Lynn and usually visits her grave to give his love to her.

Lethal Weapon[]

  • He shoots down a sniper at a schoolyard.
  • He attempted to arrest a group of drug dealers.
  • He took McCleary off a building and onto the ground, although he endangered him a bit.
  • He saved Murtaugh by shooting the pimp who tried to shoot Murtaugh.
  • He tries to shoot Joshua from his helicopter, and again when they were in the desert.
  • He kills the interrogators and frees Murtaugh and his daughter Rianne.
  • He chases down Joshua and fights him and kills him in the end.

Lethal Weapon 2[]

  • He tried to stop the suspects that was going past the speed limit.
  • He saved Leo Getz from the assassin that tried to kill him.
  • He chases down the guy that tried to kill Leo on a stolen truck.
  • He orders Murtaugh to not move from his toilet as there was a bomb underneath while he calls bomb squad and saves his life by making him jump from the toilet.
  • He infiltrates the South African consulate to find clues.
  • He protected his former girlfriend Rika Van Den Haas from the South African diplomats.
  • When he realized Pieter Vorstedt killed his wife and his former girlfriend Rika, he avenged them both by killing Vorstedt.

Lethal Weapon 3[]

  • He tried to disarm a bomb in a building, despite failing miserably.
  • Although, he ruined a shot of Rianne pretending to be kidnapped in her movie, he did apologize for it and only thought she was actually in danger and got her job back when he accidentally got her fired.
  • When Roger accidentally fires his gun, Riggs takes the fall by pretending to be angry by throwing a tantrum and hitting the lockers as if he took the shot, saving him.
  • When he went to where Roger was at the docks, he talked him out of drinking and depression and to become a cop again.
  • Although he had a rocky upstart with Lorna Cole, (his new girlfriend and later wife), he came to her aid when she got shot by Jack Travis and tried to revive her.
  • He tamed Jack Travis' Rottweiler guard dog and adopted him.
  • When he witnessed Officer Edwards wounded by Jack Travis, he tries to revive him, and when he fails, he tells him "Happy Birthday, kid".
  • He kills Jack Travis with the armor-piercing bullets and takes his foot off the brake lever of the digger he was riding in, making him incinerate in the burning house development.

Lethal Weapon 4[]

  • He stops an armored flamethrower criminal that was burning the city.
  • He shoots at the guys trying to kill them from a ship.
  • He tries to chase down the chinese captain that was on the ship.
  • He tries to fight off Wah Sing Ku and his henchmen to save Lorna, Trish, and Rianne.
  • He interrogates Benny Chan to tell him where the Hongs are.
  • He kills Wah Sing Ku by firing him with an AK-47.
  • Even before Riggs marries Lorna, he says to Victoria at her grave that he'll always love her and he'll always have her in his heart.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is far too lethal for NPG. While most of his kills are justified since most of his enemies are dangerous, he sometimes goes too far with his violent tendencies. For example, when he discovered that Pieter Vorstedt and Rudd's henchmen killed his former girlfriend, Rika, he snapped the neck of one henchmen and smashed the other through a car window and banged his head with the car door 4 times, while this was justified since they killed her and spited him for it, it was still brutal.
  • He is also reckless as he can cause damage while trying to catch villains and sometimes ignores warnings from Murtaugh and take risks that lead to trouble.
    • In the third film, he insisted on disarming a bomb in a building instead of waiting for bomb squad backup and accidentally cuts the wrong wire, which results in the building being blown up and him and Murtaugh being temporarily demoted to patrolmen.
  • He has many mischievous and jerkish moments. When he was in Arjen Rudd's office, he played "eenie, meenie, miney, mo" with the triads and as soon as he said "hey, mo!", he shoots Arjen Rudd's fish tank and released a lot of his fish from the tank and almost floods the place and left saying "Big smiles".
    • He also likes to mess with Leo as he once pulled on his broken nose and altered his chart at the hospital so he'll go through unecessary rectal surgery when he got shot.

Trivia[]

  • For a while, Martin Riggs was originally approved Near Pure Good for subverting his anti-heroic traits, but it was later found out his other traits weren't subverted, such as his mischievousness and lethality being too severe, so he was removed and approved Inconsistently Admirable.
