He is played by Mark Hamill.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
A New Hope[]
- He helps Aunt and Uncle Owen to moisture farming, even though he wants to join the war soon.
- Although he showed some arrogance in not listening to Obi-Wan in going after a rescue attempt for his Aunt and Uncle, he did it because they were his family and their lives were at stake.
- He saves princess Leia.
- He uses the Force to destroy the Death Star, which may not only have saved the Rebellion but possibly billions of innocent lives.
The Empire Strikes Back[]
- As the Empire attacks Hoth, he fights in the Battle of Hoth, and his successes greatly help the rebellion fleet to make a solid escape from the Empire.
- He takes Obi-Wan's word into account to be trained by Jedi Master Yoda.
- When he senses his friends being in grave danger such as Han’s torture by Vader, he rushed in to try to save them. He also called out Yoda’s (seeming) willingness to potentially sacrifice Han and/or Leia for the greater good, even if it was superficial.
- Rejected Darth Vader’s offer to join the dark side.
Return of the Jedi[]
- He tries to give a peaceful reasoning with Jabba to free Han, though it didn't end well; but successfully saves Han and his friends from the Hutt’s clutches.
- He makes an honorable promise to Yoda and returns to him.
- As everyone truly did not believe Vader could be redeemed, as even Vader himself didn't believe it was possible, Luke however did believe he still had a chance and choose to approach to him by his own accord to try to reason with his father.
- Although he was on the brink of killing Vader in a fit of rage and over the fear of his sister Leia turning to the dark side, he snapped out of it, telling Darth Sidious that he'll never turn to that path.
- As Sidious was torturing with his force lightning, Luke begged for father to save turn back to the light by saving him, which ultimately led to Vader to doing so by killing the Emperor.
- He wanted to save Vader by taking him off the Death Star and only didn't do so after his father insisted that attempting to save him would be futile which it was due to Vader dying shortly after telling him that.
Post-Original Trilogy Era[]
- He saved the Infero Squad member Del Meeko and taught him that he can be a better man by leaving. These words encourage Del to leave the empire with Iden Versio.
- Rescued the Mandalorian and his allies from the Dark troopers.
- He gives Grogu a choice on to either train with him as a Jedi or go back to the Mandalorian, and when Grogu chooses to go the Mandalorian, Luke honors his decision by letting him go.
- He attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order with new apprentices.
The Last Jedi[]
- While he did refused to train Rey at first, this is because of Ben's fall to the dark side and didn’t want to loose any more students, making it somewhat justified. He still teaches Rey about the Force and the Jedi, although reluctantly and upon insistence.
- He recognizes his own mistakes that pushed Ben into the dark side and apologizes to his nephew during their confrontation on Crait.
- He sacrificed his own life to create a Force projection and distract the First Order and Kylo Ren, effectively buying enough time for the survivors of the Resistance to escape from Crait safely. This also put more doubt in Ren, and was an indirect cause of his redemption.
The Rise of Skywalker[]
- He encourages Rey to not give up and fight her grandfather Palpatine.
- He uses the Force to give Rey an X-Wing so that she can go to Exegol.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- His acts in the sequels are too immoral for him to be PG or NPG.
- The dire consequences of him nearly murdering his own nephew, which was the last straw that led Ben to abandon the Jedi and start his journey to become Kylo Ren, who in turn helped the First Order, destroyed the new Jedi Order and murdered thousands, including Han Solo. However, he only did this out of fear that Ben might turn evil (as he could sense the darkness within him) and felt deep remorse for it later. Furthermore it's made very clear it was a moment of absolute pure instinct not conscious thought, and he was instantly filled with shame the second he turned his lightsaber on. Ultimately he did not going through with the murder attempt, making this a minor prevention.
- While he did give up on killing Ben, after losing him and the rest of his students, he gave up on doing anything, abandoned them and isolated himself to die instead. He didn't pursue or confront his nephew about what happened at the Jedi Temple, which led Ben to stick with Snoke, join the Knights of Ren, turn the dark side, and eventually join the First Order. Luke gave up on stopping Kylo until long after it was too late, and it took long to do something even after Rey asked him to help.
- His isolation on Ahch-to lasted 6 years and he never tried to contact his family, not even Leia, who was struggling to fight against Snoke and the First Order, which now included her own son. He became so bitter over believing that the Jedi's ways screwed him over that he tried to burn their sacred books, when it wasn't really the Jedi's ways’ fault for his mistakes with his failed attempt in rebuilding the Jedi Order as homicide over fear of someone's dangerous potential is a darkside characteristic not a lightside trait. While he isn’t wrong about the Jedi Order’s own hypocrisy and hubris being the main contributing factors of their downfall, this still doesn’t justify his actions.
- He was a huge jerk to Rey, who needed his help.
Trivia[]
- Initially at least for the original trilogy Canon Luke was considered to be on the higher moral scaling's of heroism, being either NPG or PG, but this changed when the sequel trilogy revealed that Luke was responsible in making Ben Solo a villain. In the sequels, Luke also showed other corrupting qualities and only started doing heroic deeds after meeting Rey, years after the First Order, Snoke and Kylo Ren had already done many villainous deeds.
- His attempted murder of his nephew has been seen as one of his most controversial moments and one of his most infamous preventions from being Pure Good or Near Pure Good, as it's strongly been questioned if this moment was in-character given his previous corrupting qualities, or whether it was an exaggeration of how easily susceptible he was to the dark side:
- Luke's fear of the dark side had been well established, with Yoda stating that he would be deeply afraid in the future, with many fans seeing this as foreshadowing his attempted murder and Episode VIII suggesting Yoda knew Luke’s fear would get the better of him, hence why he lectured the importance of failure to him, with the counter argument stating that sequel trilogy Luke wouldn't be homicidal, given how he was able to overcome his fear of dark side in facing Darth Vader's overwhelming power, and the love of his friends and family leading him to redeem his father, who had committed worse crimes than Kylo.
- Luke's arrogance in A New Hope of him not listening to Obi-Wan's warnings and rushing in to save Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru or when Yoda warned him of the dangers in going to face Vader and his friends were cases that was used to support the idea of Luke being arrogant enough that he would commit murder to save his friends. However Luke was shown to have developed out of this, showing no signs of his past arrogance in Return of the Jedi, where he became wiser and patient. Furthermore, the reason for his behavior in the original trilogy was because of actual harm being caused to his family and friends, as Owen and Beru were murdered and Han was getting tortured by Vader.
- He almost gave in to the dark side in Return of the Jedi by nearly killing Vader, but the debate against that claim was that both Vader and the Emperor had gone to great lengths to provoke him by not only trying to turn him to the dark side, but Vader threatening to corrupt Luke's sister Leia.
- Canon Luke's nepoticide prevention also shares a similar level of controversy Legends Luke has with him giving into the Dark Side, as both preventions have been heavily criticized in declaring Luke to be so susceptible to the Dark Side, there is also an irony to the difference between the two. In the Legends continuity when Darth Caedus, Luke's nephew murders Luke's wife Mara Jade, Luke refuses to kill him in avoiding any personal tendency in giving into dark side vengeance while in the Canon continuity Luke was almost willing to murder Ben Solo simply because of sensing his nephew to be a potential darksider.
- He and Anakin, Din Djarin and Din Grogu, and Father and Daughter, as well as Homer and Bart Simpson are the only father-child duos on this wiki.
- Coincidentally, the first three duos are from Star Wars.
- He and Anakin, Father and Daughter, and Homer and Bart are the only duos that are biologically related, as Din Djarin adopted Din Grogu.
- What's more coincidental is that he and Grogu are both on the front page representing Movie Inconsistently Admirable.
- His Legends Counterpart doesn’t qualify as Inconsistently Admirable due to being less lethal and more Pure.
