Ling Yao is a supporting protagonist in the anime/manga series Fullmetal Alchemist. He is one of the forty-two children of the current Emperor of Xing and half-brother of May Chang, being the twelfth crown prince and the leader of the clan Yao.
In the Japanese version, he was voiced by Mamoru Miyano who also voiced Riku in Kingdom Hearts and Light Yagami in Death Note and in the English version by Todd Haberkorn.

What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- After escaping from prison, he sends Fu to evacuate Maria Ross from Amestris to Xing.
- He was furious at King Bradley when he claimed that his subjects are just worthless pawns.
- During fight with Wrath, Ling does not leave Lan Fan when she is severely injured, despite making it difficult for him to escape.
- Helps catch Gluttony.
- He is grateful to Colonel Mustang for helping Lan Fan.
- He revealed to Roy Mustang and the Elric Brothers about King Bradley secretly being the Homunculus Wrath.
- He helps the Elric brothers in their fight against the crazed Gluttony. After being devoured by the homunculus, he apologizes Ed for bringing them here, later Ling supported Edward during their battle against Envy.
- He left a message about his fate for his subordinates so that they would not worry about him.
- He heatedly helped Greed, whose memories are restored, understand that he really is the previous Greed and still has memories of his late associates, involving that having friends is part of Greed’s soul.
- He warned Edward about Pride, who had possessed Alphonse's armor.
- Along with Greed, they work together during their battle against Pride and Gluttony.
- Along with Greed, they prepare to fight Wrath at Military Headquarters during the Promised Day due to their shared hatred for Wrath due to what he previously did to both of their subordinates.
- He saves Fu during their duel against Wrath, though he was unable to save Fu from sacrificing himself once Fu realizes he had lost too much blood.
- After Captain Buccaneer sacrifices himself when he helped prevent Fu's sacrifice from being in vain, together with Greed, they destroy Wrath's Ultimate Eye and then fulfill Buccaneer's last request and protected the gate to repay this favor.
- They warned the soldiers and told them that they can run if they don't want to die.
- When Father attempted to absorb Greed, Ling tried save him, forcing Greed to state a lie for the first and only time to prevent Ling from being absorbed with him.
- He was clearly saddened by Greed's death.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Ling blackmailed and threatened the Elric brothers. He was also an illegal immigrant and later escaped from prison.
- He is an anti-hero who is motivated by the desire to obtain immortality.
- He often mooches off of Edward Elric by getting a large amount of food to have and then leaving Ed with the bill, much to the latter's chagrin.
- He was willing to let Edward take the blame for the damages to Rush Valley from the battle with his attendants which he is responsible for causing by pretending he could not speak their language prior to Alphonse using Alchemy to fix the damages.
