~ Light after regaining his memories of the Death Note |
Light Yagami is the main protagonist of the 2015 television drama Death Note, based on the manga series of the same name. While he is initially a broken yet caring genius who acts as a father figure to Sayu despite an estranged relationship with his father, he embarks on a killing spree once getting a notebook that can kill people, after being led on by Ryuk. However, Light is using this notebook to try to save the world by ending all of crime.
He was portrayed by Masataka Kubota.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- Light is genuine in his intentions the whole way through in the drama - he genuinely wants to rid the world of all crime and is far more sympathetic than his canon counterpart.
- He initially wanted to be a police officer when he grew up, however his mothers death broke him - this resulted in an estranged relationship with his father.
- Despite this relationship, he still goes out of his way to save his father from the person who caused their mothers death after Sayu pleaded to him.
- Light acts as a father figure to Sayu, doing her laundry and helping her out in general. He never even considers killing her when she was kidnapped.
- He protects his friend Kamoda from the bully Genbu Sakota by killing Genbu.
- He genuinely cares for Misa Amane, even going out of his way to kill the killer of her parents in order to avenge them.
- He also genuinely cares for Teru Mikami.
- Light is shown to have standards when killing criminals, like in canon, taking circumstances into account. However, unlike canon, drama Light never subverts this.
- In the final confrontation, Light was only intending to kill Near rather than the rest of the task force. This suggests he'd grown genuine friendships with them.
- Light is overall far more anti-heroic the whole way through in this series - and he doesn't subvert many of his redeeming traits unlike his canon counterpart.
- Has an 'Alas, Poor Villain!' death where he burns alive inside of the warehouse and shouts that it can't have all been for nothing. Matsuda even tries to go back for him.
Amnesiac Light[]
- Promises L and the rest of the task force to stop Kira.
- Light shows sincerity and genuine affability without his Kira memories. He condemns Kira's actions completely, like in canon.
- He refuses to manipulate Misa Amane to get her trust despite being requested to by L.
- He finds out about Yotsuba killing members from different businesses and is actually the one to point this out to L - as well as this, this is an L who was a lot less motivated, so he might not have even figured this out himself until much later.
- He helped rescue Matsuda from the Yotsuba group.
- He and his father called out L for refusing to arrest the 8 members of the Yotsuba group to figure out how Kira kills.
- He called Reiji Namikawa and convinced him to both delay the Yotsuba killings for a month and act as a mole to help discover and capture Kira among the eight members of the Yotsuba group.
- He helped the Japanese Task Force capture Higuchi, who had been acting as the Third Kira.
- He gains a genuine friendship with L, which even leads to him being slightly saddened when actually killing L in the end after regaining his memories.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Light's method is mass murder - no matter what this would lead to, this still results in him being an anti-hero at best.
- Light lets his father commit suicide because his father was 'in his way' - even with their estranged relationship, this is ruthless and cold.
- Like his canon counterpart, this version of Light still has a massive moral fall from where he was initially. He also still kills innocent people if they are after him.
- He threatens to kill Cathy even though she isn't a criminal.
- He tries to kill her husband Raye Penber.
- He desperately tried to kill Near multiple times towards the end, even getting angry when Matsuda shoots him and calling Matsuda an idiot.
Trivia[]
- Light Yagami is one of four versions of the character to be considered Inconsistently Admirable - with the others being from the Jump Force game, the original amnesiac Light and the Netflix Light Turner.
- He is one of two Light's, the other being Light Turner, to be both Inconsistently Admirable and Inconsistently Heinous.
- The non-amnesiac state of this version of Light still counts for this wiki because unlike his canon counterpart, he doesn't subvert most of his redeeming qualities by the end.
