NOTE: This article is strictly about Light Yagami's heroic acts during his amnesiac period, as Kira-self's heroic acts are based on his selfish god complex.

Look at my eyes! Do these look like the eyes of someone who is lying?
~ Light Yagami after losing his memories.
The way the original Kira acted is disturbingly close to my ideals.
~ Light's internal monologue about questioning his true identity.
Light: If I capture the current Kira... After that, do you really think I would become Kira... become a murderer...? Do I really look like that kind of person?
L: That's what I think, and that's how you look.
~ Light Yagami to L.

Light Yagami is the temporarily heroic protagonist in the Yotsuba Arc in Death Note. Despite being the villainous protagonist of the series, due to the Death Note's ability to transfer and store its holder's memories before and after finding it, he temporarily falls into an amnesiac state without the Death Note in hand and tracks down the new Kira with the help of the Japanese Task Force alongside L Lawliet, before eventually managing to retrieve his original memories.

He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano in Japanese (who also voiced Ling Yao), and Brad Swaile in English.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • After losing his memories, he promised L Lawliet that he will join him and the Japanese Task Force to stop Kira.
  • In contrast to his Kira self, even with internal monologue Light shows little to no signs of psychopathic behavior, and does his best to avoid that trait.
  • Refused to manipulate Misa Amane to gain her trust despite L's request.
  • Found out that Yotsuba has been killing members from different businesses to make its company grow in power.
  • He believes Kira is wrong to kill criminals and is disturbed by the possibility that he could think like Kira.
  • He and the Japanese Task Force helped rescue Touta Matsuda from being killed by the Yotsuba group.
  • He and Soichiro Yagami called out L for refusing to arrest the eight members of the Yotsuba group just to learn about how Kira kills.
  • Called Reiji Namikawa and convinced him to both delay the Yotsuba killings for a month and act as a mole to help discover and capture Kira among the eight members of the Yotsuba group.
  • Helped the Japanese Task Force capture Kyosuke Higuchi.
  • Unlike his non-amnesiac conscious self, this Light acknowledges the corruption of what the Death Note can do to someone and attempts to do whatever he can to stop this corruption from happening as much as possible, which ironically leads him back to his non-amnesiac self in doing the complete opposite.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Has strong moral agency issues since his amnesiac state prevents him from truly understanding his own true nature of being a delusional god wannabe.
    • Even before he reclaims the Death Note, he often doubts about the morality of the original Kira, thinks about the criminals deserve to be killed, and notes that the original Kira's act is disturbingly close to his ideals. However, this act itself is a minor prevention given Light states killing criminals is wrong even given this.
  • Can act aggressive and violent to L when the latter accuses him of being Kira multiple times. When L confesses about being depressed because he couldn't prove Light is Kira, Light even punches L in the face and starts a physical fight because of it.

Trivia[]

  • He is technically the first Pure Evil to temporarily be Inconsistently Admirable, followed by Dr. James Sheridan, Griffith, and King Edward V.
  • It is possible that Light's amnesiac self may have been who he used to be at some point in the past before becoming the bored and depressed student that is seen at the start of the series and then descending into villainy after getting the Death Note.
    • This is supported by the fact that he only lost the memories related to finding and using the notebook, meaning that this personality may have been his true self at some point before the events of the series. This is hinted by him briefly feeling remorseful for having killed two people after first using the Death Note, before fully falling into corruption.
    • The eye expression of the amnesiac Light also resembles the ones in the initial chapters, with round and innocent eyes in contrast with evil Light's sharp and narrow eyes.
    • A suggested detail in the anime is when L questions Light from the moment he was born has he ever told the truth? Implying that he is referring to Kira being the real born psychopath that was made, and not Light outside of using the Death Note, and a comparison before this that happens in both the manga and anime, is how Light doesn't really refer to himself as Light, but as Kira, with the example of his internal monologue of him pretending to be Soichiro's son, which comes across as if an entity took over Light's body, only mimicking him and embodying the darkest path to Light's ideals.
  • His non-amnesiac Kira self doesn't count as Inconsistently Admirable, as his "Goodness Zone" of killing criminals is just to grab the absolute power and let himself worshipped as the god of the new world, as is evidenced when he killed Lind L. Tailor just because he called him evil despite the fact he knew he couldn't catch him. Additionally, any allies who were for his cause that posed any sort of threat to him being caught were killed. He is even suggested to have plans to kill Misa in the future.
  • This version of Light would actually likely be NPG or even PG without his moral agency issues, given his low amount of preventions (which are minor themselves). This goes to show how the Death Note changed Light and adds to the tragedy of his character - which makes lots of fans wonder how Light would have turned out without the Death Note.
