~ Leo, telling Roan about his motive for working with her. |
Leo Barnes is the overall main protagonist of The Purge series. He is a former police sergeant that turned into a vengeful and ruthless anti-hero after his son was killed in a drunk driving accident by Warren Grass, who was acquitted of the charges on a legal technicality. Leo then decided to murder Warren during the next annual purge and almost succeeds in doing so, but after being convinced not to by the group of survivors he had been protecting, decides to spare Warren's life and becomes Charlie Roan's head of security a few years later in order to help her abolish the Purge.
He was portrayed by Frank Grillo.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
The Purge: Anarchy[]
- He saves Cali and Eva from being killed or even raped by a group of terrorists lead by Big Daddy by killing their captors.
- He then saves them again by allowing them to get a ride with him in his armored car, during which he also saves 2 more people named Shane and Liz after they hid in his car.
- While he does initially attempt to ditch the survivors for the sake of his plan to murder Warren, he at least gives them weapons to defend themselves with, before eventually deciding to escort them to a woman named Tanya's apartment when Eva promises to give him a car if he gets them there safely.
- Saves the group from a oncoming thug after Liz screamed and attracted him to their position by snapping the thugs neck and preventing the rest of the thugs from finding them.
- Escorts Eva and Cali out of the subway tunnel after Eva is injured by a group of Purgers and has a panic attack, doing his best to heal her wounds after escaping.
- Saves Liz's life from Roddy after he uses her as a human shield to protect himself from Lorraine.
- He then holds Lorraine off long enough for everyone else to escape.
- Boosts all the other survivors over a fence first before himself, almost getting spotted by Big Daddy's terrorists in the process.
- Protects the group during the "human hunting" game hosted by rich Purgers, killing 4 of the hunters single handedly and killing the 5th one with the rest of the group, causing the remaining 2 hunters to cowardly run away.
- Kills the attacker that injures Shane, managing to save everyone else, but Shane unfortunately dies of blood loss shortly after.
- Whilst he came really close to murdering Warren in revenge for his son, he ultimately decides to spare his life and just leaves his house, earning the respect of Cali and Eva for doing so and it ends up saving him due to Warren killing Big Daddy after he injures and nearly kills Leo.
The Purge: Election Year[]
- After becoming Charlie Roan's head of security, he is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure she stays alive, knowing how important she is to the end of the Purge.
- When Charlie refuses to go to a safe house as she believes it will impact her chances of winning the election, Leo decides to revamp all of the security in her house, adding a complex locking system, having multiple bodyguards both inside and outside, having 2 snipers positioned to kill any attackers, installing a remote bomb in Charlies room to use if her room is attacked and finally as a last resort, installing a trapdoor underneath a rug that would allow them to escape if all the other security measures fail.
- After escaping the house, he protects Charlie from the traitors in the security detail, detonating the remote bomb he had set up to kill them, a duo of terrorists, a security drone and a small group of Purgers before being knocked out and nearly executed before the fortunate arrival of Joe Dixon and Marcos Dali who save them.
- During the struggle, he also attempts to stop the others from killing Charlie, despite already being overpowered himself.
- Prepares to help defend Joe and Marcos's store from a group of purgers wanting to kill them and vandalize the store, only turning out to not need to as the timely arrival of Laney gets all the Purgers in the front entrance killed.
- Expresses remorse for attempting to purge in the previous film after hearing from Laney that someone they picked up attempted to purge by killing their assailants.
- Painfully retrieves the tracer bullet from his muscle tissue, using it as a trap for Joe's loyalists to gun down a group of terrorists.
- After being informed that purgers were storming Dante Bishop's base, he escorts Charlie out of the base, saving himself and her from a subsequent trap in an alleyway as he does so.
- Leads everyone on a mission to save Charlie after she is taken hostage by the NFFA for execution, leading to the deaths of several NFFA members, several Purgers being defeated and Charlies life being saved.
- Protects the others and a group of survivors from Earl Danzinger when he attempts to kill everyone after arriving at the parking lot of the NFFA base.
- Helps Dante pull off a heroic sacrifice to kill Danzingers 2 remaining men, before taking on Danzinger himself in a knife fight, managing to defeat him but deciding against murdering him as he knows that Charlie wouldn't like it.
- Once Purge Night ends, it's revealed that Charlie has won the election and will become the next president of the U.S. leading to the end of the Purge for 8 years and eventually, permanently thanks to Leo and the rest of the groups efforts to keep her alive.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is an anti-hero as he is pretty blunt and rude to quite a lot of people around him most of the time and is perfectly okay with brutally killing anyone who gets in his way. An example being when Joe and Marcos had just saved his life, Leo doesn't even thank either of them and even decides to insult Joe, also going as far to say that his feelings aren't a concern to him at the moment.
