I, Lelouch vi Britannia, command you! Now all of you... die!

Lelouch vi Britannia, also known as Lelouch Lamperouge, is the titular main protagonist of the Code Geass franchise.

He is an exiled prince from the Holy Britannian Empire who acquires the power of Geass, which allows him to control minds, and uses this to start a revolution as the masked vigilante Zero.

He is voiced by Jun Fukuyama in the Japanese version and Johnny Yong Bosch in the English dub.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

R1[]

  • He has a strong sense of justice and hates those who abuse their power to oppress people. He also has an instinct to help others even if it would not benefit him. He also has a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • He's very devoted to his sister Nunnally and is motivated to build a world where she can live peacefully.
  • He is very brave in combat and always leads his forces, reasoning that if he doesn't lead he can't expect anyone to follow him.
  • He saves Kallen's resistance cell from being massacred and helps turn the battle in their favor, and is able to force Prince Clovis to order a ceasefire in order to save the Japanese in the Shinjuku ghetto.
  • Comforts Nunally over Suzaku's arrest.
  • He rescues Suzaku from his court-martial and is respectful of his differing views when Suzaku refuses to join him.
  • He inspires the Black Knights to fight honorably and not target civilians. In their public debut, he leads them in saving the victims of a hotel hijacking as a show of good will to the public.
  • Tries to save Shirley from Mao and wipes her memory so she doesn't have to deal with the guilt of taking a life.
  • He teams up with Suzaku to save Nunnally when she's kidnapped by Mao.
  • Sympathizes with Suzaku when he learns that he killed his father.
  • He saves Tohdoh, a leader of the JLF, from execution.
  • He orders the Black Knights not to kill Suzaku upon learning he's the Lancelot's pilot, and tries again to persuade Suzaku to join him.
  • He's regretful over being forced to Geass Suzaku in order to escape, saying that of all people, he never wanted to use the power on him.
  • He teams up with Suzaku to repel a Chinese invasion.
  • He ultimately supports Euphemia's plans for the Special Zone upon being convinced of her sincerity. When his Geass goes out of control and causes Euphemia to massacre the Japanese, Lelouch is horrified at this and remorseful at having to kill Euphemia to stop the violence.
  • Went to save Nunally from VV.

R2[]

  • Upon regaining his memories as Zero, Lelouch is able to reconcile with Kallen and convinces her that he did not Geass her into loyalty. He then restarts his revolution, taking out Viceroy Calares while also giving the Black Knights a safe haven in the Chinese Federation.
  • He masterminds a plan to save hundreds of Black Knights from execution.
  • He realizes that his fight against Britannia isn't about Nunnally, but also the rest of the world.
  • He intervenes when the Chinese Empress is being forced to marry a Britannian prince, ultimately accepting that Xing-ke truly loves her and taking his side in battle when Xing-ke is betrayed by the Eunuchs.
  • When Kallen is captured, Lelouch contacts her and swears that he will save her no matter what. After breaking her out of prison, he apologizes to her that it took so long.
  • He forms the United Federation of Nations, a legitimate political body, which makes liberating Japan, as well as the rest of the world, its number-one goal.
  • He meets with Suzaku and tries to negotiate with him and find a way they can end the war without bloodshed for Nunnally's sake. This almost works until Schneizel makes Lelouch think Suzaku set him up.
  • He and Suzaku save Shirley from falling off a roof.
  • Spares Lord Jeremiah and allows him to join him upon discovering his past.
  • Tried to save Shirley after Rolo shot her.
  • He puts on an act when the Black Knights betray him in order to save Kallen from being killed along with him.
  • He accepts Rolo as his brother when he sacrifices himself to save Lelouch from being killed by the Black Knights.
  • He reconciles with Suzaku, and they stop Charles and Marianne's plan to subjugate the free will of mankind.
  • The only reason he doesn't romantically pursue Kallen after their kiss is because he's protecting her from following him in Zero Requiem and getting killed in his plan.
  • By defeating Schneizel, he prevented his plan to use the FLEIJA to commit mass murder on a global scale.
  • He arranges the Zero Requiem as a plan to bring world peace. Making himself appear to be a hated tyrant, Lelouch arranges his own assassination at the hands of Suzaku, now acting as Zero, in the hope that this will bring an end to the violence, while Zero will continue to be seen as a hero of the people.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is clearly anti-heroic, as he is very arrogant and vengeful. He also has anger issues and tends to act irrationally when provoked or when someone he cares about is threatened.
  • When he first obtains his power, he uses it to massacre the Royal Guard who were about to execute him, and while this may be justified and he's initially shocked at what he did, he then smiles evilly, showing that he enjoyed it and has no problem with killing in the name of his goals.
  • He mercilessly kills his half-brother Clovis even when he begged to be spared (which Lelouch felt guilty about later).
  • He can act like a jerk to Suzaku.
  • While he genuinely wants to free Japan, he is more focused on personal revenge on Britannia for what it did to him and Nunnally.
  • He often underestimates his opponents or blames others for his own mistakes. One example is when he was beaten by Cornelia in an early episode, and rather than take responsibility, he blamed the forces under his command for being disorganized.
  • At the Battle of Narita he causes a landslide to wipe out the opposing army. When this causes civilian casualties as well, he dismisses this as a "mathematical overestimation."
  • He blows up a ship that the Black Knights wanted to save, while making them think Britannia was responsible. While his reasoning was that it was too late to save them and doing so would have put them in more danger, this shows he's willing to lie to his followers and even kill allies if it suits his goals.
  • He Geasses Mao to never speak again after he ridicules Suzaku for his death wish, even though Mao had already been captured and was not a threat. Then again, he likely considered traumatizing Suzaku in this fashion unforgivable, and had survived getting gunned down in the previous episode.
  • He becomes unstable after Euphemia's death, laughing psychotically while causing mass casualties in the Black Rebellion. He also cheats when dueling Cornelia, Geassing her aide Darlton to stab her Knightmare in the back, then mockingly thanking Darlton before killing him on the spot.
  • He abandons the Black Rebellion when Nunnally is kidnapped, which results in nearly all his allies being killed or captured.
  • When he is unmasked by Suzaku and Kallen in the Season 1 finale, Lelouch refuses to explain his actions (either out of guilt or impatience) and taunts Suzaku. This sends Suzaku into a rage, and he captures Lelouch, while Kallen abandons him.
  • He manipulates Rolo's feelings of brotherly love to get his loyalty, gloating that he'll dispose of him once he's served his purpose.
  • He considers abandoning another battle when Kallen is captured, and has to be told this time that this is preferential treatment and will alienate his men.
  • When his love interest Shirley is killed by Rolo, Lelouch becomes enraged and orders a massacre of the Geass Order, brutally killing everyone there even though they're noncombatants, some of them even children. When Rolo is fighting V.V. for him, Lelouch sadistically tries to blow him up with a bomb planted in the Knightmare Frame Vincent as a "funeral offering" for Shirley. All of this said, Lelouch could not forgive Rolo for murdering Shirley, and was unknowingly correct about Rolo wanting to replace Nunnally.
  • When he believes Suzaku set him up, Lelouch refuses to let him explain himself and repeatedly orders Suzaku killed in the following battle, which inadvertently triggers the geass command to live that Lelouch had placed on him, causing him to fire the FLEIJA nuke, obliterating most of Tokyo and causing millions of casualties.
  • When Nunnally is presumed dead, Lelouch blows up at his followers, telling the Black Knights that he doesn't care about their casualties, then screams at Rolo that he hated him and had been trying to kill him.
  • He becomes suicidal following Nunnally's presumed death and the Black Knights' betrayal, causing him to cross every possible line he previously wouldn't, namely geassing masses of people into absolute obedience. When he becomes Emperor, it is inferred he causes millions of deaths in the name of becoming the most hated person in history, which is needless considering how awful Charles and Schneizel were, among others, and that evil and conflict dying out with one's death is a flawed position. Also, as Emperor, Lelouch was now in the position to make changes for the good of all, and had already gained a measure of popularity for eliminating the Numbers system, providing evidence that he could have succeeded if he only tried. Schneizel being a rival changes very little of this. The Zero Requiem in a sense resembles an out for himself, leaving the role of Zero in the hands of Suzaku, whose strategic and tactical skills are inversely proportional to his combat skills.
  • In general, Lelouch's sense of responsibility can be as much of a hindrance, as he holds others at a distance and refuses to defend himself against an accusation even when he has a perfectly good alibi, namely when Suzaku presses him over geassing Euphemia at the Kururugi Shrine.
