| ~ Landon Ricketts to John Marston. |
Landon Ricketts is a major character in the 2010 western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption serving as one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Abraham Reyes) of the Nuevo Paraiso chapter and a minor character in its non-canon DLC Undead Nightmare and its prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2.
He is a renowned gunslinger who was praised for twenty-five years during the height of the Wild West era. Later on he ran away to Mexico to leave his "outlaw" life behind and live more quietly. There, he supports the Mexican rebels against the government and acts as their unofficial marshal.
He was portrayed by the late Ross Hagen.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- While he may have been an "outlaw" during the Wild West era, he mostly served as a vigilante and took out several other outlaws and criminals, including the Butcher Brothers, in his 25 years of being a legendary gunslinger.
- He redeems himself by fleeing to Chuparosa to live a quiet life after his participation in the Blackwater massacre and a gunfight in California, where he acts as an unofficial marshal of the town and possibly protects it from bandits.
- During his time in Mexico, he marries a woman but dies of unidentified circumstances at an unknown period.
- After meeting John, Ricketts teaches him how to be a better gunslinger by giving him a much better revolver and instructing him to shoot at bottles and multiple vultures that were invasive and scaring the townspeople, which significantly improved John's gun skills, upgrading his dead-eye ability to level three, allowing him to mark targets and shoot much more accurately, making John more successful in his later missions.
- He, along with John, retrieves a bank cart and safely returns its rider to town after being informed that the wagon was getting robbed by a group of armed bandits. While a second batch of bandits tried to block their way by using a wagon, John and Ricketts easily wiped them out and returned safely.
- He is honorable, as after getting asked by John what choice did he ever make, he responds that he is a fighter who will fight to the very end.
- After arriving at El Matadero, he and John meet with Carlos and plan how to get Luisa out of jail. After Carlos distracts the guards outside, Landon and John infiltrate the canyon jail and shoot the soldiers all the way till they reach Luisa's cell. Landon, along with John, carries the injured Luisa and shoots reinforcements as they leave. After escaping the jail, they ride their horses and kill the remaining soldiers pursuing them, saving Luisa's life.
- When Muller accuses John of cheating in a poker game, Landon defends John despite the fact that he has known Muller longer than John.
- Before John and Muller's gun duel, Ricketts motivates John by pointing out to him how to properly execute a duel and using what he has taught him by marking the target.
- After John kills the Stranger during a duel, who held a woman hostage, Ricketts assists John and kills the rest of the Stranger's and Muller's allies that were also trying to kill them.
- While he seems to be proud that his wife died during the poker game, this could not be a corrupting quality due to it being a joke of his, and he may miss her instead based on the joke and when he says he is unlucky in love.
- Ricketts and John ride to the jail cart's location after being informed by Luisa that a group of untried prisoners are about to be executed on Allende's orders, where they shoot up the soldiers who are transporting them. Landon and John then rode the wagons to the United States, where they shot several soldiers who tried to kill them. After crossing the border, Landon and John release the inmates, saving them from being executed.
- He makes a farewell to John and thanks him for putting him back in his time, hoping that he will find Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella before leaving.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- His 25-year past as a vigilante is too anti-heroic and lethal to be NPG, as while he focuses on killing criminals, including the Butcher Brothers, it was never specified what their crimes were or how evil they were, and he could have arrested them and brought them to jail instead of murdering them outright. He is additionally believed to have been involved in the infamous Blackwater massacre, and while his role in this incident remains ambiguous, he may have committed a crime such as mass murder, as a crime accomplice, or as a vigilante. As he was involved in several gunfights throughout West America, it is implied that he may have killed non-criminals during his duels or fights.
- Although he did become a better man after fleeing to Chuparosa shortly after his participation in the Blackwater massacre and a gunfight in California, he continues to commit crimes, such as being a vigilante of Chuparosa and stealing the dead Muller's money to buy him and John a drink.
- His redemption after his farewell to John isn't thoroughly explained and clarified, and it is unclear whether he remains a vigilante or not.
- He can have jerkish moments, as after John defends himself by killing the locals that tried to rob him, Ricketts mocks him for his bad gun skills, although this is a minor prevention, as he teaches John to be a better gunslinger later on and his mockery may have been sarcasm.
